Assessed mainly on your practical skills The BA (Hons) Filmmaking degree is around 70% practical and 30% theory based. You’ll get lots of opportunities throughout for free extra-curricular film craft workshops and Masterclasses, to learn a wide range of disciplines within film production, tailoring your own experiences to your own specific aspirations. The BA (Hons) Film Business & Production degree has practical elements embedded into the delivery and the opportunity to work on real- life briefs and projects. Industry-standard equipment and facilities Screen and Film School has the very best in industry standard kit such as modern LED-light fixtures, high- end equipment from leading brands such as RED Raven, Arri Alexa, Sony FS7 and Canon C300, as well as a selection of modern mirrorless DSLRs. At the heart of the film schools are fully working production- standard sets with lighting rigs and flats. Film Craft Workshops Our extra-curricular activities also extend to film craft workshops which have been developed to support your development in technical, creative and production roles. These workshops are updated regularly, but typically will include the following: screenwriting, producing, camera & lighting, editing, film business and directing actors. They have been designed so all students can utilise them in order to develop their filmmaking skills further. Budgets allocated to students We would never expect our students to self-fund their productions, which is why we are one of the few higher education providers in the country to offer budgets to students for the entire duration of their three-year undergraduate degree. This offers vital experience of how to handle finances on a production and also as part of a film crew – which are some of the most important skills that are outlined by our industry partners. Alumni Community - 5 year graduate guarantee For five years after your graduation ceremony, we are here to support you as you begin your life in the industry. You will be part of our alumni community; here you will have exclusive access to a range of internships, freelance work, mentor opportunities, access to equipment and job opportunities through our wide range of industry partners. We will regularly invite you back for networking events, screenings, Masterclasses and career advice clinics. Today’s Film Industry —— For the calendar year 2020, despite this most unusual of years and taking all of the pandemic-related challenges into account, the following can be said: The combined total UK spend on film and high-end TV (HETV) productions for the full year 2020 was £2.84 billion. The total number of film and HETV productions for 2020 was 231. Live Project Briefs Students can also work for real clients during their time at Screen and Film School, which will provide them with the chance to work to deadlines, understand professional requirements, overcome problems, and deliver the final product – with an emphasis placed on engagement and motivation. Festival Support Learn to navigate the international film festival circuit and online outlets in order to maximise opportunities and generate awareness for your films. Graduating students can apply for our Film Festival Fund and independent filmmakers host Masterclasses on the application process. Students’ films are submitted for a number of festivals and awards, including GSA BAFTA Student Awards, Cinecity Open Category, Aesthetica Short Film Festival and David Thomas Student Awards. Brighton Film Studios Brand new for 2021, this dedicated film lot represents a giant leap forward in Screen and Film School Brighton’s continued development, and fittingly arrives in the year of the college’s fifteenth anniversary. Situated just over two miles north east from Brighton’s city centre, Brighton Film Studios will be one of the only film lots of its kind on the south coast.
