HOMETOWN HEROES Hometown Heroes HARLEY NOLAND For many tourists, a guided Trolley Tour of Marietta is one of the highlights of their visit. The Trolley is owned and operated by Harley Noland, a well-known resident who can trace his family’s Marietta roots back 200 years. Harley has a background in architecture and design, and in 1977 he bought the historic Levee House, one of Marietta’s most iconic and legendary buildings. After a complete restoration, Harley opened the Levee House Café which was in business nearly 30 years before it was transformed into the Levee House Restaurant. Harley wanted to increase tourism and help visitors appreciate the river town he loved so much. He took ownership of the Trolley Tour as a way to share not only that love, but also his deep knowledge of Marietta and its many historic buildings. The popular tour stops at many of the city’s landmarks while the guide offers the history and often little-known facts, to the delight of the Trolley passengers. Throughout his career, Harley has always been one of Marietta’s greatest cheerleaders. His love for the preservation of our history and architecture has led him to serve multiple terms on City Council. He has also served on the boards of several non-profits, including The Castle Museum and the Washington County Historical Society. Harley Noland’s face is a familiar one in Marietta, and his civic pride and knowledge are contributing factors to the city’s historic vitality. 27 800.288.2577 mariettaohio.org
HOMETOWN HEROES SARAH ARNOLD When Sarah Arnold moved back to Marietta in 2012, she was inspired by the creative people who called the Mid-Ohio Valley home. In 2014, Sarah launched Clutch MOV, an online community magazine for, by and about the residents of the MOV. From its modest beginning, Clutch MOV has grown to reach over 50,000 readers monthly with uplifting, positive stories about the people, places and events that make this area special. Sarah tirelessly promotes small businesses and often sponsors community events and collaborations to highlight the arts. In addition to her full-time job and Clutch MOV, Sarah is an active community volunteer and served on the Board of Marietta Main Street, including a term as President. She helps with events like Harmar Days and projects of the Pub- lic Art Committee. Sarah Arnold’s mission is to highlight the many great things the MOV has to offer, and through her efforts thousands of people have learned what a great area the Mid-Ohio Valley is to visit, work, and call home. PETER NICHOLSON If you’ve attended an event at the historic La- fayette Hotel, chances are you’ve met Pete Nicholson. Nicholson may have been born in Britain, but he has proudly called Marietta his home since 2005. For the last four years, Nicholson has worked as the lead Banquet Server for the hotel, directing the setup and service for weddings, organization meetings and other events. Nicholson’s love and pride for the Lafayette is evident in his work and he will happily share his knowledge about Marietta with visi- tors. The customer’s comfort and enjoyment is a priority, and Nich- olson will go beyond his responsibilities to ensure each guest has an excellent experience. Pete Nicholson is one community member who helps Marietta earn a reputation of friendliness and hospitality. SYLVI CAPORALE For twenty-five years American Flags and Poles has been an anchor storefront on Marietta’s Front Street. Owners Jim and Sylvi Caporale have built a successful business by offering a large selection of America themed and USA made products backed by excellent customer service. The shop carries an ever-changing inventory of home and lawn décor and seasonal accents, but it’s the wide array of flags and banners that brings customers from near and far. Sylvi is proud of the variety of flags offered, from traditional US flags to those honoring the military and different orga- nizations. She is not shy about expressing her love for her country and is quick to support veterans and active members of the military and first responders. That support has earned her and Jim the Washington County Veterans Committee Chair Award of Excellence. Small towns rely on community support to thrive, and Sylvi has long been active in promoting Marietta and working to- ward its future growth. She has coordinated special events to draw visitors, such as book signings, holiday celebrations and the Band Organ Rallies that fill the streets with music and festivities. Sylvi and Jim have a band organ of their own and they bring it out for special occasions. If you hear the lively music at American Flags and Poles, be sure to stop in and say hello to a community champion and one of the most patriotic people you’ll ever meet. #VisitMariettaOH 800.288.2577 28
