The Anniston Star READER’S CHOICE Weekend Edition, August 27-28, 2022 Page 20 FIRST PLACE FIREFIGHTER Firefighter Jesse Register cares for the community he serves BY JAMES BENNETT jbennett@annistonstar.com Lt. Jesse Register has been working at the Jacksonville Fire Department for 19 years. During that time, the 45-year-old firefighter has gained a rep- utation for service to the community and for coaching younger crew members. “He’s been here for almost 20 years and cares for the com- munity he serves,” Assistant Chief Randy Childs said. “You have to have a servant’s heart, and he does. I think people recognize that.” Voters in The Anniston Star’s Reader’s Choice awards sure do. Register was named Best Firefighter in the annual voting. “The reason I became a lieutenant was to help with the younger guys,” Register said. “The best way to take care of them was to become a lieutenant. I can teach them what I know. I can lead by example.” The married father of two worked as a volunteer firefighter in Angel before joining the Jacksonville Fire Department. “I always was interested in firefighting, and it was a good place to learn,” Register said. Register’s wife, Haylee, of 20 years was on board with his career decision. Her father was a firefighter. “She knew what she was getting into,” said Register, who works 24-hour shifts, followed by two days off. Firefighters often deliver safety messages as part of their duties. Register said he tells school children and homeowners about the importance of smoke alarms. “That’s the one message I would like to deliver to everyone — make sure you have working smoke detectors,” he said. “I tell kids that smoke detectors want new batteries for their birthdays, meaning they need changing at least once a year.” The stress of being a firefighter can take a toll. It also involves EMS work, where Register and his colleagues often see serious injuries. “I could not do my job without support from my fellow fire- Submitted photo fighters,” said Register, who grew up just outside Jacksonville in Lt. Jesse Register has worked at the Jacksonville Fire Department for 19 years. Pleasant Valley. “It’s an honor to work beside them.”
