GRAVE MATTERS By Carol Hochstadt WIND STORM AND BIG QUESTIONS IN MEMORIAM Our community mourns the loss of Ted Bazer Uncle of Lana Stoddard Joel Burney Father of Debbie Sigman WIND STORM: Allyson White Gamble Daughter of Clifford These pictures are certainly worth a thousand words…they show & Nancy White some of the damage done to our cemeteries when the massive wind storm hit on September 8th. Shaare Tzedek looked like a war zone; ultimately, we had twelve trees down in that cemetery, including the Rachel Hinterman Daughter of Rebecca Levine, entire North border. Twelve toppled in B’nai Israel, one of which hit Sister of Ethan Hinterman our maintenance shed and left holes in the roof. No trees fell over in Montefiore, but there was wind damage. One of our large trees split our power pole and blocked 11th Avenue. In answer to the Marie Huchard Mother of Lili Field most commonly asked questions; 1) the city is not responsible for our repairs; and 2) insurance does not cover it. The preliminary bill for the cleanup was over $40,000; electrical and roof repair have yet Igor Lvovich Father of Leonid Kopytkovskiy to be billed. We are very appreciative that Salt Lake Monument has volunteered to donate one day of repairing some monuments that sustained damage from falling trees. Monument damage appears Sandy Pepper Long-Time Member to be minimal, but families may discover some when the City Cemetery reopens its gates; repair and maintenance of monuments is the family’s responsibility. Our hope is to replace as many of the Leon Shaposhnikov Long-Time Member trees as possible in the spring, including those that separate Shaare Tzedek from the Japanese cemetery to our north. The damage from this storm could have been much worse; no one was injured Jan Snyder Sister of Jolene Snyder and our graves were undisturbed—in time, we hope to see new growth replacing the old. Carol Tannenbaum Daughter of BIG QUESTIONS: Ralph Tannenabum A Kol Ami board member reaching retirement age recently asked me what “big picture” questions he needs to answer when thinking about “final arrangements.” I would start with the question, “Do I want a Jewish burial?” The answer to this question could still be “yes” even if you choose cremation or body donation (with cremains www.jewishcemeteryutah.org 18 CO N G R E G AT ION KOL A M I • P U BL IC AT ION N U M BER 1 F OR T H E Y EAR 2 0 2 1
