BREEDER, INDUSTRY 2021/22 National Hunt Yearbook PROFESSIONAL OR WELCOME from the TBA NH Committee Chairman ENTHUSIAST, TBA 2021 proved to be another year in which the pandemic impacted our lives; but at least the continuation of racing, along with the appearance of foals conceived during the once-threatened covering season of 2020 and the MEMBERSHIP OFFERS return of spectators to the racecourse and auctions, brought back some of the things likely to matter to those reading this. It was wonderful too that this MANY BENEFITS. year we were able to have a ‘real life’ meeting with fellow breeding fanatics at the NH Breeders’ Awards Evening in August at Doncaster. Most attendees thought it was the best ever, and the chance to catch up with old friends played no small part in this. We are delighted to present the TBA NH Yearbook for the 2021/22 season, which once again highlights what the TBA does for the National Hunt industry. As usual, updated details of the TBA/ HBLB Elite NH Mares’ Scheme are featured, along with details of the record number of stallions available under the scheme, which offers fantastic incentives for owners of the best jump mares to use British-based stallions. A nomination to each stallion will also be available to breeders via the TBA’s online Silent Auction, which is staged in January – contact the TBA office for more information. An exciting development covered in detail is the NH Early Racing Initiative, which seeks to improve the development of young Jump horses in this country – full details can be found on page 18. We hope you will ‘read all about it’ and then consider it for young horses you are planning to race in future. In addition, we give an update on the Great British Bonus (GBB), which launched last year and is now GBB discounts starting to transform the prospects for British-bred NH fillies (and hopefully their breeders!). Third party public liability policy* We hope you enjoy reading this Yearbook, that you have a successful breeding season and, above all else, that we will find you healthy, happy and having fun at a future TBA National Hunt event. 2021/22 National Hunt Yearbook 2021/22 National Hunt Yearbook CILLA’S BREEDER GIVEN A SURPRISE SURPRISE In breeding National Hunt stock you know that you are in for the long haul and the recipient of the “I bred my first foal when I Queen Mother’s Silver Salver for 2020 was Henry Cole. Having been breeding since the age of was 23 and have bred the 22, Cole has made quite the mark within British National Hunt breeding and was a most deserving winner of the highest accolade awarded at this year’s TBA NH Breeders’ Awards Evening. winners of over 100 races. Cole will be inextricably linked with two familiar faces of the mid-nineties chasing scene – the 1994 When I bought her [Just Grand National runner-up Just So and his half-sister Dubacilla, winner of the 1993 Tattersalls Mares’ Camilla] at Newmarket I Only Novices’ Chase Final, who two years later was runner-up in both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and got into a different league Grand National. altogether. I went to cover “I bought Just Camilla for 1,200gns out of Newmarket in 1979 and we bred Dubacilla, Just So, and good ones keep coming up,” before remarking to host Nick Luck on the evening that the best was available a filly I had bought by Pony the next day at the Goffs UK August Sale. That filly, a daughter of Clovis Du Berlais and Drucilla, a Express, and then I saw granddaughter of Dubacilla, was retained after Cole couldn’t face letting her go. Dubassoff [at Woolley In an in interview after being named Breeder of the Month for December 2020 following Mister Grange Stud] and that is Malarky’s win in the Silver Cup Handicap Chase at Ascot that month, he had noted that he had how I got Dubacilla, but it decided to retire from breeding having turned 80 a few months before. Drucilla was made available for sale in the opening sentence of the interview. hasn’t always gone right.” Henry Cole and daughter Louise at the 2021 TBA NH Breeders’ Awards Evening. When asked for his most pleasing moment, Cole nominated Dubacilla’s half-length defeat of Rough Quest in the 1994 Comet Chase as his proudest moment, saying: “Giving him 18lb was a great day - she beat a future Grand National winner giving away that much weight.” Luck noted that Cole had run the gamut of the game and made the life of a National Hunt breeder sound a damn sight more exciting than anyone thinks it could be, Cole’s retort was that it was better than milking cows, before adding: “I milked for 44 years and the horses have been great fun, they took me everywhere and I have met everyone, it’s been wonderful.” What made Cole’s achievements all the more remarkable is the fact that not only did he breed the pair but was also the owner and the trainer of both. Cole’s daughter Louise Farrance managed to keep the award a surprise from her father and after emotionally conveying she was very proud, picked out the family’s highlight, saying: “Coming second in the Grand National. The guys from the press came down and it was if we had won it - we ran the local pub dry and partied for weeks after.” Whilst quite rightly the achievements of the two siblings were celebrated, the family has kept producing. Dubacilla threw four winners from ten foals, including the eight-time winner and dual Grade 2-placed Mister Quasimodo. Although not a winner, the multiple placed Priscilla has gone on to produce Mister Malarky, whose biggest win came in the Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase, the high-class Dubacilla (left), defeats Rough Quest in the 1994 Comet Handicap Chase at Ascot, Cole’s highlight of the mares memorable chasing mare Desert Queen, a two-time Listed winner, and Hameldown Tor, a prolific winner of point- racing career © Steve Cargill to-points in the South West. 12 13
2021/22 National Hunt Yearbook Dudgeon Cup Heroes – COVER YOUR MONEY The decision to award Cover Your Money the Dudgeon Cup in both 2000 and 2001 must have been an easy one for those whose responsibility it was to award it. In the space of seven days in 2000, Cover Your Money was represented by three winning offspring, Red Marauder, Anna Karnali and Red Striker – all were bred by Anne and David Jenks – and was grandam of another in the shape of Celtic Native . The following year Red Marauder memorably ploughed through the mud at Aintree to record his biggest success in the Grand National. 2021/22 National Hunt Yearbook Dudgeon Cup Heroes – ROBIN AND SCARLETT KNIPE Whilst there have been multiple winning mares of the Dudgeon Cup, there lies only one breeding entity that so far has achieved the notable feat, that of Robin and Scarlett Knipe. Their Cobhall Court Stud once housed the stallions Ardross and Oats, both of whom were influential in their Dudgeon Cup winners. Miss Poker Face was awarded the prestigious prize in 1995 on account of her Oats son Master Oats, whose victories that season came in the Rehearsal Chase, Welsh National, Pillar Property Investments Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup. If a veterinary certificate is not forthcoming, the mare owner will remain liable for the whole cost of the nomination fee. 7 A copy of the signed nomination agreement is to be sent to Stanstead House by the stallion stud, together with a copy of the invoice issued to owners of mares who are certified in foal as at 1 October 2022. 8 Where fees are subsidised by the HBLB, mare owners are required to pay any remaining fee to the stallion stud according to the terms of the nomination agreement; failure to do so may result in the mare owner being liable for the whole cost of the nomination fee. 9 Should demand exceed the funds allocated for the scheme, or funds be reduced to the extent that the scheme becomes untenable, the TBA reserve the right to withdraw or amend the scheme at any time. In particular, any excess of demand over available funds may be dealt with by reducing the value of grants awarded for Category 3 mares to £1,000. If this step becomes necessary, every effort will be made to notify those affected as soon as possible. 10 The TBA NH Committee’s decision on any matter regarding the 2022 Elite NH Mares’ Scheme must be regarded as final. 26 27
