2020 Senior Trips: Thursday, March 12th – Wolfhart Haus Dinner Theatre “Down Memory Lane” Location: Wytheville, Va Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 10:15am Cost: $60.00 Details: Join us as we celebrate Wohlfahrt Haus' 20th Anniversary Season with this original revue highlighting the best moments of the last 20 years with some of your favorite Wohlfahrt Haus players. Enjoy this significant milestone, as we take you down Wohlfahrt Haus' memory lane. Monday, March 16th – Tuesday, March 17th – Biltmore/Downton Abbey Exhibition Location: Asheville, NC Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 7:00am Cost: $280.00 single occupancy/$220.00 double/$200.00 triple/$190.00 quad (per person) Details: Enjoy a 2 day/1 night excursion to Asheville, NC where you will get a chance to tour the infamous Biltmore House and see the Downton Abbey Exhibition. The next day you will enjoy a guided tour of downtown Asheville that will include drive bys of the St. Lawrence Basilica and the Thomas Wolfe home. Price of the trip includes travel, one night’s hotel accommodations, tour tickets to the Biltmore and The Downton Abbey Exhibition, dinner on Monday night and breakfast Tuesday morning. The Senior Center will also provide breakfast biscuits on Monday morning. Trip must be paid in full at time of sign up. Seating is limited. Wednesday, April 8th – Barter Theater “Driving Miss Daisy” Location: Abingdon, Va Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 9:15am Cost: $50.00 Details: When Daisy Werthan’s son hires Hoke to drive her around town, the indomitable Daisy has no idea that her stubborn chauffeur will soon become a permanent fixture in her life. Over the span of twenty-five years, these two develop an unlikely bond that challenges the idea of friendship during America’s Civil Rights era. Lunch will be on your own.
Monday, April 27th – Friday, May 1st – The Ark Encounter and Creation Museum Location: Williamstown, Ky Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center on Monday at 8am Cost: $589.00 for Double Occupancy/$768.00 for single occupancy (per person) Details: Enjoy this 5 day/4 night trip to see the life sized replica of Noah’s Ark as well as the Creation Museum and the Newport Aquarium. Price of the trip includes motor coach transportation, 4 nights lodging, 8 meals (4 breakfasts, 4 dinners), entrance to the Ark Encounter, Creation Museum, Newport Aquarium, a riverboat sightseeing cruise on the Ohio River and more. A $75.00 deposit is due at the time of sign up. Thursday, May 7th – Barter Theater “9 to Five: The Musical” Location: Abingdon, Va. Time: Departs from Salem Senior Center at 9:15am Cost: $50.00 Details: Full of laughter and sidesplitting Southern sass, this Broadway musical comedy is based on the hit movie starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Come watch these three unlikely friends as they scheme to take control of their company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do, even in a man’s world. Lunch will be on your own. Wednesday, May 13th – Pharsalia Plantation Tour and Cheese Shop Location: Tyro, Va Time: Depart from Salem Civic Center at 8:45am Cost: $45.00 Details: Pharsalia is the historic home of the Massie family. It was built in 1814 for William Massie, the youngest son of Major Thomas Massie, a distinguished veteran of the American Revolution. It is located within beautiful orchards and vineyards at the foot of DePreist Mountain. Today it hosts many weddings, tours and events. Price of the trip includes 2 separate tours of the main house and outbuildings as well as a delicious lunch at the plantation. Afterwards we will head to Stuarts Draft to visit the Cheese Shop. Wednesday, June 10th – Day trip to Wytheville Location: Wytheville, Va Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 8:30am Cost: $45.00 Details: Enjoy a tour of the Thomas J Boyd Museum and the Rock House Museum then head over to the Beagle Ridge Herb Farm and Butterfly House for a catered lunch. After lunch check out the Trinkle Mansion Bed and Breakfast where you can enjoy a cup of punch and a “shrub”. Lunch is included in the price.
Thursday, June 18th - Wolfhart Haus Dinner Theatre “Motown Sound” Location: Wytheville, Va Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 10:15am Cost: $60.00 Details: Detroit in the early 60's was on the move...home to major auto makers and Motown Records. This exceptional tribute features the music of the Temptations, Tina Turner, Diana Ross and the Supremes. Enjoy your favorite memories of Motown as you re-live what Berry Gordy coined "the sound of young America" and made a city come alive. Thursday, July 9th – Barter Theater “Wizard of Oz” Location: Abingdon, Va. Time: Departs from Salem Senior Center at 9:15am Cost: $50.00 Details: Join Dorothy & Toto as they skip down the yellow-brick road with only a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, & a Cowardly Lion to protect them from the Wicked Witch of the West. This joyous classic is a must-see for young & old alike. Lunch will be on your own. Thursday, August 13th – Wolfhart Haus Dinner Theatre “How Sweet the Sound” Location: Wytheville, Va. Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 10:15am Cost: $60.00 Details: Come join the Wohlfahrt Haus Family as we celebrate our gift of life through music and song! We will give thanks and praise to the Lord through inspirational hymns, soul-lifting spirituals and toe-tapping gospel selections presented by our amazingly talented cast and musicians. Wednesday, September 2nd – Thursday, September 3rd – Overnight Richmond, Va trip Location: Richmond, Va Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 7:45am Cost: $295.00 single occupancy/$235.00 double/$215.00 triple/$205.00 quad (per person) Details: Enjoy a 2 day/1 night excursion to Richmond, Va, our state capital. Among the things we will do in Richmond while we are there are : Tour the city which will include the State Capital, St. Johns’ Church (Patrick Henry’s speech), attend a Richmond Squirrels baseball game, visit the Virginia Museum Fine Arts and the New American Civil War Museum. Cost of the trip includes transportation, hotel room, baseball ticket, 2 lunches, breakfast, and admission to museums and tours. Full cost of the trip is due at sign-up. Space is limited.
Thursday, September 17th – Barter Theater “We’ll Meet Again” Location: Abingdon, Va. Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 9:15am Cost: $50.00 Details: A world premiere from the author of Civil War Voices. Jewish refugee Henry Stern flees Nazi Germany at the age of five to start a new life with his family in the small town of Opelika, AL. Many years later, Henry makes an amazing discovery that gives new insights and meaning to his life’s journey. A story filled with joy, sorrow and resilience, this new musical reminds us to embrace and celebrate life. Lunch will be on your own. Wednesday, September 23rd – Mayberry Days Location: Mt. Airy, NC Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 7:45am Cost: $35.00 Details: We will be enjoying a day of celebration of the Andy Griffith Show in Mt. Airy, N.C. as they celebrate Mayberry Days. Upon arriving we will enjoying shopping and lunch on your own in downtown Mt. Airy. After lunch we take a tour of the Andy Griffith Museum and enjoy a show by John Floyd, a comedian known as “The Mouth of Mayberry”. After the show you will once again have free time to take in all of the festivities before heading back home. Tuesday, October 6th – Natural Bridge Location: Lexington, Va Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 9:00am Cost: $25.00 Details: Enjoy a guided tour of the caverns and enjoy free time after lunch to learn about the bridge and walk the trails to the Monacan exhibit, if interested. We will eat lunch in between tours at the Pink Cadillac (on your own). Thursday, October 15th – Wolfhart Haus Dinner Theatre “Big River” Location: Wytheville, Va. Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 10:15am Cost: $60.00 Details: Come along on the journey of a lifetime as Huck Finn and runaway slave, Jim, take a musical trip down the Mississippi River. Mark Twain's classic tale is hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, with memorable songs by Roger Miller like "Muddy Water", "River in the Rain" and "Free at Last.”
Monday, October 19th – Saturday, October 24th – Biloxi and New Orleans Gaming Trip Location: Biloxi, Ms./New Orleans, La. Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center on Monday at 8am Cost: $620.00 for Double Occupancy/$800.00 for single occupancy (per person) Details: Enjoy this 6 day/5 night gaming trip to see the exciting Mississippi Gulf Coast. Price of the trip includes motor coach transportation, 5 nights lodging including 3 consecutive nights at a Casino Hotel on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, 8 meals (5 breakfasts, 3 dinners), guided tour of Bay St. Louis, a visit to a second gulf coast casino, admission to Mardi Gras World and a relaxing riverboat cruise on the Mississippi River. A $75 deposit is due at sign up. Thursday, December 3rd – Barter Theater “A Christmas Carol” Location: Abingdon, Va. Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 9:15am Cost: $50.00 Details: The joy of the Christmas season returns with this sparkling production! Come and relive the sheer exhilaration of Ebenezer Scrooge’s ghost-guided journey into his Past, Present and Future, where despair gives way to hope, and reclamation awaits all who seek it. Wednesday, December 9th – Wolfhart Haus Dinner Theatre “Country Christmas” Location: Wytheville, Va. Time: Departs from Salem Civic Center at 10:15am Cost: $60.00 Details: Don't miss Virginia's all-time favorite Christmas tradition as the Wohlfahrt Haus presents Country Christmas. Get your fill of your favorite holiday vittles then enjoy a holiday show performed in true country fashion. All the songs you know and love by country artists both old and new. Featuring a breath-taking nativity which is sure to put you in the Christmas Spirit. ****There may be a trip or two added soon so please keep up to date with the trip list and monthly newsletters for more information*****
Salem Senior Center Trips Policies and Procedures All trips will leave from the Salem Civic Center Parking Lot, East side, near the tennis court, (1001 Roanoke Boulevard), where there are PLENTY of parking spaces OR from the Salem Senior Center. Please make sure you check your trip list to see which place you will board the bus. We will keep you up to date on any changes and/or additions. Day Trips: • All day trips must be paid in full upon registration. • Payments made by cash or check made payable to the City of Salem (unless otherwise stated) • Unless otherwise stated per trip, cancellations prior to one week of departure results in a full refund in the event a replacement can be made. Failure to fill vacancy will result in forfeiture of all non-refundable payments. • Cancellations made within one week will result in forfeiture of all non-refundable payments. • All participants must complete and sign a travel participant waiver form for each trip. • Trips lacking ample number of participants will be cancelled in advance of payment deadlines and all payments will be refunded. • Full itineraries and agendas will be available at the Salem Senior Center. Overnight Trips: • All overnight trips must be paid by deposit or in full upon registration. • Payments made by cash or check made payable to the City of Salem (unless otherwise stated) • All cancellations for overnight trips must be made thirty days out in order to receive a full refund. All non-refundable payments will be forfeited if cancellations are made within thirty days of departure if a replacement is not available. • All participants must sign a participant waiver form prior to each trip. • Trips lacking ample number of participants will be cancelled in advance of payments deadlines and all deposits/payments will be refunded. • Full itineraries and agendas are available at the Salem Senior Center.
