3 VENUE INFORMATION #MSLT20
The Imperial Wanderers Stadium is South Africa’s home of cricket. With a capacity of 34,000, the ‘Bullring’ is the biggest in the country and has a history of having one of the most hostile venues for visiting teams. It has the been the scene of the biggest matches ever hosted by the country, like the 2003 ICC World Cup and the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 finals. But a match played at the venue, even more famous than those two, was one of the greatest One-Day Internationals of all time – the 434 match between the Proteas and Australia from 2006. Also the venue for the annual Pink ODI. IMPERIAL WANDERERS STADIUM I Jhb Capacity 34 000
Arguably the most picturesque cricket ground in the world, PPC Newlands is situated in one of the prettiest cities on the globe, Cape Town. With the backdrop of Table Mountain and Devils Peak, it is also one of the venues that is most well supported by South Africans. It has hosted a number of major games over the years, amongst them the 2003 ICC World Cup and 2007 World Twenty20. In Test cricket, it stages the annual New Year’s Test, a highlight of the cricket calendar. PPC NEWLANDS I Cape Town Capacity 25 000
Another one of South Africa’s most popular grounds, Kingsmead is situated on the banks of the Indian Ocean. It hosted one of the most famous Test of all, what proved to be the final timeless Test between South Africa and England in 1939 that lasted 10 days and had to be called off over fears the tourists may miss their ship home. More recently it hosted matches in both the 2003 ICC World Cup and 2007 ICC World Twenty20. KINGSMEAD STADIUM I Durban Capacity 25 000
Possibly the noisiest ground due to its now world-famous brass band, which plays tunes both old and new at almost every match and creates a unique atmosphere at the Eastern Cape venue. St George’s Park is one of the country’s oldest venues. It hosted the first ever Test to be played by South Africa way back in 1889 against England. It also was a popular venue for the 2003 ICC World Cup. ST. GEORGE’S PARK I Port Elizabeth Capacity 19 000
The smallest of the six venues, Eurolux Boland Park is situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands in the quiet town of Paarl. But when cricket comes around, the place is abuzz. Locals love their sport and they have proved that over the years with their support for whoever is sent to play there. Another ground surrounded by grass banks, it also has a traditional feel to it. Also hosted games during the 2003 ICC World Cup. EUROLUX BOLAND PARK I Paarl Capacity 10 000
One of few remaining top international stadia that have grass embankments almost entirely around the ground. It has helped SuperSport Park maintain the traditional feel of watching cricket and gives fans an even more relaxed atmosphere to enjoy the game, with braais a popular practice. Another one of the premier stadiums in South Africa, which has hosted, amongst other things, the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy final. In recent years, it has staged a domestic final almost every season.
