THEME: NEXT Generation Architecture
NEXT is AIASF’s premier conferencing event organized for stakeholders of the built environment to learn, share,
and grow. The 2019 NEXT Conference theme seeks to expand dialogue and engagement around the theme of next
generation of architecture. For the goals to be reached, we look to the local design community to submit proposals
that show how you’ll create inspiring and empowering experiences; feature interactive and engaging learning; and
showcase emerging trends and innovations as part of the local effort towards a sustainable future.

 NEXT Generation Architecture aims to:
         • Look for the next BIG IDEAs for the profession;
         • Leverage technology in the advancement of design;
         • Integrate equity and social justice to the development and practice agenda;
         • Utilize the best of science in the development of new materials, including biology and chemistry;
         • Share the tools for design outside of the profession with the advancement of augmented reality and
              virtual reality;
         • Establish physical, economic, and social resiliency in the face of global economic and climate change;
         • Challenge and investigate new and emerging technologies for construction delivery;
         • Demonstrate new ways to practice architecture.
How can architects use their talents, tools, and values to meet these goals and how can the profession grow its
relevance in the process? The conference endeavors to set a new standard for sustainable urban development and
to rethink how we plan, manage, and live in our communities.
We can start now and we’d love your help. We’re accepting proposals for educational presentations now through
the extended deadline of Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 11:59 PM (Pacific Time). Submissions should be
multidisciplinary in nature and include perspectives from industry collaborators. Don’t know what we mean?
Please take a look at last year’s website.

PRESENTATION PROMPTS
Refer to these Presentation Prompts which are intended to serve as a guide for proposal ideas.

        DESIGN TRACK:
        San Francisco continues to be on the cutting-edge of design innovation, and the creative processes in
        which designers and architects use to problem solve are as diverse as the industry itself. Let’s explore how
        design innovation can help to solve our most vexing social and environmental challenges, and improve
        access to sustainability and equity in the built environment.

        Sample questions to prompt your presentation proposal:

                 • What sources of inspiration drive your creative process that will include culture as a priority
                     component of urban plans and strategies?
                 • What design strategies can improve access or raise standards of essential infrastructure such
                     as in waste management, transportation, education or healthcare?
                 • What design efforts can support the leveraging of cultural heritage for sustainable urban
                     development and recognize its role in stimulating participation and responsibility?
                 • How can designers innovate within projects to drive improvements to socioeconomic
                     conditions in under served communities, such as decreasing waste streams and increasing
                     recycling rates, and creating new job opportunities?
                 • What are some current and future trends impacting the design process as it relates to
                     energy, including alternative energy sources like solar or wind power?
                 • How can designers empower impacted communities and create buy-in for a project
                     outcome?
                 • How can architects learn from global efforts in housing and community development to
                     address local crisises like homelessness or overpopulation?

        TECHNOLOGY TRACK:
        Technological advances are shaping the future for designers and architects. We commit ourselves to
        encouraging urban-rural interactions and connectivity by strengthening sustainable transport and
        mobility, technology, and communications networks and infrastructure. We support planning instruments
        that are based on an integrated urban and territorial approach and rely on tech tools to speed up the
        delivery and communication of design concepts. How will technology shape the future of architecture to
        advance the connectivity between cities and their surroundings?

        Sample questions to prompt your presentation proposal:

                 • What are the largest challenges architects and designers face when leveraging innovations in
                     technology into practice and what are the best solutions for incorporating new
                     technologies?

                                                         2
• What cutting-edge technologies can be applied to architectural design as well as
             communication to improve the environment or quality of life?
        • What role can technology play in today’s design industry practices and culture that will
             promote the development of information and communications technology for more citizen-
             centric digital governance tools?
        • What digital platforms and tools can make technological innovations accessible to all from
             enabling civic responsibility and broad participation, to fostering responsible governance and
             increasing efficiencies?
        • What are the latest developments and trends related to residential and commercial building
             technology as it pertains to improving energy standards or the efficient use of natural
             resources?
        • What technology trends are adopting a smart-city approach, creating opportunities for more
             environmentally-friendly choices, resilient development, as well as sustainable, economic
             growth?

BUSINESS TRACK:
The aim is to develop vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive urban economies and inclusivity of all
communities to foster an enabling environment for business and innovation, as well as livelihoods. What
are the best design practices for creating a culture that draws on these resources? What trends will affect
how practices operate in the future?

Sample questions to prompt your presentation proposal:

        • How are firms evolving in the industry to be part of the solution of climate change and more
             sustainable global infrastructures?
        • How are firms adapting their approach to staffing and human resources? How are firms
             responding to active discussions on critical topics from racial and gender equity to the state
             of immigration?
        • What are the trends impacting the design profession and how do they affect the practice?
        • Are the means of providing services and project delivery in the industry changing?
        • How can an architecture firm or sole practitioner grow in a rapidly changing global
             economy?
        • How do designers communicate with clients of diverse backgrounds, and how are design
             service communications changing? What are the new and effective communication tools and
             methodolgies?
        • What evidence and trends are contributing and affirming the business case for sustainable
             design and development?

SESSION FORMATS
AIASF encourages submission of sessions, including lectures, group discussions, panels, workshops, breakouts, and
much more. Share as many details about your proposed format as possible in your proposal to allow the Content
Advisory Group to determine the best time slot for your session.

SUBMITTAL DETAILS AND REQUIREMENTS
The NEXT Conference is intended to challenge traditional thought, identify trends and current pressures, and
motivate attendees to think “outside the box.” Seminars and workshops should be aimed at an
experienced/advanced level. The audience will include architects, designers, contractors, engineers,
manufacturers, and representatives, as well as other allied professionals, educators, and students.

SESSION LENGTH
Submitted sessions should be planned to fill 60- or 90- minute slots. Submitters are encouraged to find creative
ways to split up the 90 minutes – for example, one panel may speak for 45 minutes and then spend 45 minutes in
discussion groups. Attendees respond positively to mixed-type and interactive formats, which break up the 60 or
90 minutes and stimulate more active thinking.

SUBMITTAL AND ACCEPTANCE
To be considered as a NEXT 2019 presenter, you must submit your proposal to AIASF by Tuesday, April 30, 2019,
11:59 PM (Pacific Time).

If accepted as a speaker for NEXT 2019, you will agree to provide an electronic copy of your complete presentation
or session handouts no later than Friday, May 30 for inclusion in the conference proceedings materials.

PROPOSALS WILL BE ACCEPTED ONLINE ONLY. PROPOSALS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 2019,
11:59 PM (Pacific Time).
