Foreword I was delighted and very honoured to be asked to write the foreword to this year’s Awards Brochure, now in its 26th year; and still with two of the original three judges working for it. I joined Bob Hewitt and Brian Carrier when John Cowie retired in 1997 and have just completed my seventeenth year as a member of the team. I commenced my working life in 1949, leaving school at 15 I have decided that this 2014 Competition is to be my last; years old; and taking a five year apprenticeship as a Painter and I have resigned my position as a judge. Health reasons and Decorator. The small company I “learnt my trade” in was must prevail I regret to say, but there is no doubt that I shall involved in all aspects of a decorator’s work; graining; miss so very much my contact with my industry; and the marbling; signwriting; broken colour work; paperhanging; as opportunities to see that good quality decorating is still to well as the “bread and butter” work. So, an excellent training be had. I have enjoyed all the visits over the years and I shall for a young enthusiastic craftsman. Later, following a one cherish the many contacts I have made with industry; and year full time course in Technical Teaching, I was able to pass remember the friendships developed over 17 years. on the skills I had to others. Eventually; and five Colleges Thank you all. later; I became the Head of Construction at Southampton Technical College. John W Lawrence But, what of the competition itself? First, I do believe it to be the best of its kind in the UK. It has grown from strength to strength in both quality and popularity. It was started to raise awareness within the trade itself and the general public, that Painting and Decorating was a skilled craft, and at its highest level could produce decorative finishes suitable for cathedrals, churches, public buildings, theatres, domestic dwellings; and protection for the industrial complexes so vital to our country. All these levels were achievable to the craftsman. I think that is fairly unique in the construction industry; although specialism tends to guide us into work we find we are competent to do and best suited for. The other main reason the Competition has been so successful is that the judging is completely independent of the PDA, the industry; and the manufacturers. All these are essential of course and we thank them all for their vital contribution to, and sponsorship of, the Competition. But our decisions are based on what we see and talk about “on the job”; to the client and the decorating company involved. We bring an element of company and contract management into our discussions as well as our observation of the actual works. All members of the Judging team are also members of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate, by name they are Geoff May, Victor Hollings, Graham McCled and John Noble. We are used to bringing a knowledgeable background to the judging role. This Competition is the best and long may it continue to be so. The competition was very competitive in both heats and on the naked eye; they appeared to all have a large element of quality incorporated in the various techniques required. Selecting two finalists against the scoring criteria can be a difficult and lengthy process. Two of the highest scoring competitors were from the North and South Heats, scoring a magnificent 94% and 91% respectively against the criteria marking sheet. The two highest scoring finalists who succeeded in the following areas, such as accurate setting out, sharp cutting in skills, full opacity of colours, a crisp and even personalised stencil, two evenly balanced decorative effects and sticker application are: Ben Deer (Southern Heat) who attends Bournemouth and Poole College and is employed by his father at Deer Decorating. Kyle Catterall (Northern Heat) who attends Accrington and Rossendale College in Lancashire and is currently employed by Twin Valley Homes. At the PDA Premier Trophy awards 2014 the winner will receive the prestigious PDA Trainee/Apprentice of the year 2014 trophy and over £500 worth of Purdy brushes and WINNER equipment. Commercial Winner COMPANY: Ambrose Ellis Painting Contractors Ltd PROJECT: Players & Media Stand/ New Pavilion, Old Trafford Cricket Club LCCC, Warwick Road, Manchester CLIENT: LCCC (Emirates) MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade The players and media centre was completed in 2012. In 2013 Ambrose Ellis were awarded the contract to decorate the pavilion which is a listed building. All works were completed in July 2013 to the complete satisfaction of the main contractor and the Lancashire Cricket Club. Very Highly Commended COMPANY: MITIE Property Services (UK) Ltd PROJECT: Admiral’s Quay, Internal Redecoration to 19 separate residential blocks, Gosport 2 CLIENT: Parker Torrington Ltd MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade At first sight these stairways could be considered a simple and straightforward project; but it became apparent that restricted access in the stairwells caused some difficulty in working with the 157 properties in the blocks. Special needs, in contract management and the trades people, in execution of the three floors and 19 stairways, were necessary. Further complications were caused by individual owners or lease holders requiring access at all times. The works seen were completed on time within a short programme with finishes which were good to very good, with the balustrades worthy of a special mention. 6 Premier Trophy Awards 2014
Commercial Very Highly Commended COMPANY: Axis Europe Plc PROJECT: Numbers 1,3,4-11,14-16, New Square, The Honourable Society of Lincolns Inn, London CLIENT: Richard Wild & Tom Pickering, The Honourable Society of Lincolns Inn ARCHITECT: Baily Garner MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade The contractor and the client representative gave a very full and factual account of the exterior repairs and repainting of the entered buildings. Repairs were mainly to timber cills and brickwork, which included a rubbed brick arch. The square contained extensive street furniture and railings and all finishes looked very good, solid, clean and well cut in. One undercover walk through arch was nicely finished and there was even a little signwriting accomplished to reproduce the original as it would have been. Altogether a solid job with which the client was very pleased. Very Highly Commended COMPANY: Rushworth Painting Contractors North West Ltd PROJECT: Cliff’s Hotel, Blackpool. CLIENT: Choice Hotel’s MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints This contract involved the decoration of the main restaurant and café area, all the while keeping the facility open and in use. Commercial Very Highly Commended COMPANY: MITIE Property Services (UK) Ltd PROJECT: National Trust, Wimpole Hall – Grade 1 Listed Building, North Elevation, Arrington, Royston CLIENT: National Trust MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade This Grade 1 Listed building houses the restaurant and was open to the public during the redecoration, which led to some interruption to parts of the main façade, as elevated platforms had to be removed after 10 am. On this elevation some 80 window sashes, some “blind/false”, required cutting in to transoms which were also “false”. The adjacent restaurant had greater detail to the roof eaves and other joinery items, including hardwood doors, set in walled garden areas, with bay windows to the building. Two different brands of similar paint have been applied as instructed by the client; to test performance over a period of time. This project has been well executed with cutting in worthy of special mention. A good to very good project. Highly Commended COMPANY: Ambrose Ellis Painting Contractors Ltd PROJECT: John Foster Building LJMU, 80-90 Mount Pleasant, Liverpool CLIENT: Liverpool John Moores University MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade With parts dating from the mid 1800’s certain areas are Grade 2 Listed. The three buildings are now a single unit with four floors and up to twelve staircases. Working to a tight budget for a main contract to a tight programme, required regular overlap of trades with disturbance of dust and grit particles. Despite these problems the general overall finish appears acceptable to the required standard and in places is very good. A challenging project with particular problems of access, so very well done to all concerned. 10 Premier Trophy Awards 2014
Highly Commended COMPANY: Astryan Ltd PROJECT: 33-39 Grey Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear CLIENT: Brims Construction Ltd ARCHITECT: Archial MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints Grey Street in the City centre has many imposing buildings including restaurants, theatres, and other retail shops. This contract is to carry out decorations for a main contractor, who had refurbished and repaired the structure, including making the roof water tight following many years of neglect, deterioration, and water ingress. The painter had a very tight programme to complete all works over three floors. The third floor had been completely refurbished to a very good standard, while the lower areas had a consistent, acceptable finish using standard materials. Worthy of special mention is the extensive use of Tektura Wallcoverings to a single wall in each office; and the staircases. The Decorator has played a vital part in bringing this historic building back into good use. Highly Commended COMPANY: M C Property Maintenance Ltd PROJECT: The Body Shop, Head Office Exterior Redecoration, Littlehampton, West Sussex CLIENT: The Body Shop International Plc ARCHITECT: Annette Davis, Facilities Team, Body Shop MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints The Body Shop Headquarters is a prestigious building with striking architecture based on a Japanese pagoda with a central courtyard. The work consisted of the complete redecoration of the external main building and some of the outbuildings and street furniture. Preparation included extensive repair to most surfaces, which were then finished to a good standard, using the original colour scheme. The training building roof, of pre coated steel, was prepared and spray painted. Health and Safety figured highly to ensure the security of company staff. The contractor can be proud of the finished contract which was finished to a high standard; to the satisfaction of the client. Premier Trophy Awards 2014 11
Commercial Commended COMPANY: MITIE Property Services (UK) Ltd PROJECT: Addison House – Redecoration of the Internal Communal Areas, Grove End Road, London CLIENT: Addison House Residents Management Company Ltd MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade Addison House is a Mansion Block in the St John’s Wood conservation area of London, constructed in 1920. The work was won by Competitive Tender to a specification requiring the internal public areas to be redecorated including corridors, stairwells, and the individual front doors of the occupants. Minor refurbishment was needed prior to redecoration proceeding. The walls were painted using a fire resistant durable paint producing a good standard of work, to the client’s satisfaction. Commended COMPANY: Esk Decorating Contractors Ltd PROJECT: The Clock Tower, Stockgrove Park, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire CLIENT: Mr Sheridan Williams MANUFACTURER: Jotun Paints Hidden from general view is this 95 feet high, Grade 2 Listed Water Tower, which has changed its purpose to that of a family home. Because of its position on the top of a hill, surrounded by the previous stable buildings, which interrupted easy access to the roof levels. Working to an extremely tight budget for extensive repair and redecoration externally from top to bottom. There were access difficulties at first as the scaffolding price was considered too high, so despite the technical difficulties of working at roof level both painters and carpenters made use of a static boom rig to carry out the work. Wind speeds above 12 knots at times gave artisans the “ride of their lives”. An unusual job carried out with an expected 10 year warranty. 12 Premier Trophy Awards 2014
Commercial Commended COMPANY: MITIE Property Services (UK) Ltd PROJECT: Kirkgate Shopping Centre, Bradford, West Yorkshire CLIENT: Kirkgate Bradford Unit Trust MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade This work, won by competitive tender, was looking tired and in need of repainting. The central high level areas below the roof were only available to the painter because access was only available outside shopping hours. Access was by cherry picker which had to be brought into the centre each evening; then removed before the next day’s business could start. The public areas were repainted to a good commercial standard with all areas within hand reach coated with an anti graffiti glaze. The centre looks clean and bright, a good job considering the access problems. The client was pleased with the finished work. Commended COMPANY: Ian Williams Ltd PROJECT: The Paragon, Bath CLIENT: Curo MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade/ Crown Paints The Paragon is a Georgian Terrace in the centre of Bath. This imposing listed building is now mainly used for social housing and the external woodwork needed much repair and painting to bring it back to a good standard. Ian Williams were requested to tender by the Curo Group, who own the properties. The main difficult was the scaffolding to the elevations. To the front was the main A4 road so access was difficult and to the rear there were very few access points which meant that in one instance a scaffold had to be erected over one of the houses on the back road to get to the terrace. Various repairs were required prior to painting, but the finished project looked neat and cleanly done. Ian Williams can be justly proud. 14 Premier Trophy Awards 2014

For CLIENT: Network Rail the general public, local residents and the MANUFACTURER: Jotun Paints contractor’s workers this is the case here. Stripping back to the structure base metal had to conform to CLAW requirements (H & S). For residents and others the previous lead coatings when removed were regularly sent for analysis. Then regular H&S tests on operatives working on the live (not switched off) overnight rail areas required operatives to be ICATTS approved, while lung function, drink and drug testing were mandatory. Temporary fencing was erected and removed each working day and night to live rail areas. Noise abatement consideration was approved after discussions with adjacent flat occupants re shot blasting. Also repainted was the detached fog horn building perched on the cliff edge. The complete roof structure and chimney painting along with the gutters and down pipes are worthy of special mention. Carried out under difficult weather conditions with a one week overrun for a satisfied client, interviewed on site. Well done to all concerned. 24 Premier Trophy Awards 2014

The only one of its kind in the world, and in demand world wide. The Howitzer has recently been to Holland for an exhibition in the railway museum in Utrecht. Before the journey a much needed restoration was carried out by a small team of qualified painters, completed in just 14 days. A very high specification included pressure washing, needle gunning and spot priming before applying the finishing coats. All in all, a very clean, well applied finish which should give good service at the Royal Armouries. Well done Ian Williams! Highly Commended COMPANY: Bell Decorating Group Limited PROJECT: Gateshead Ribbon Railings, Askew Road, (A184), Gateshead CLIENT: Gateshead MB Council ARCHITECT: Alan Dawson Associates MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints “Ribbons blowing in the wind” is a description given to this industrial piece of art. A light strip steel fabrication stretching approximately a quarter of a mile (440yds) adjacent to the busy Asken Road . The galvanised steel fabrication erected and treated in 2002 had commenced to deteriorate at individual joints and spot welded areas. The exposure conditions must not be under estimated. This was experienced by the judges when visiting the site, perched high above Newcastle’s river Tyne. Health and Safety conditions on site were taken into account with the painters wearing safety harness to avoid falls over the adjacent retaining wall into the road. The pollution of vehicle fumes and road grit had to be overcome with a rigid specification check at each stage. The whole project appears well just 12 months after completion. 26 Premier Trophy Awards 2014
Commended COMPANY: CLC Contractors PROJECT: Commissary (Supermarket), USAF Lakenheath, Mildenhall, Suffolk CLIENT: USAF Lakenheath ARCHITECT: Defense Estates MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints The USAF Defence Estates thought that the Commissary (Supermarket) was looking rather as if it needed some sprucing up. This was followed by a specialist cladding paint. All applications were hand applied by brush and roller using cherry pickers. The whole achieves a good general appearance which has matched the required standards. Premier Trophy Awards 2014 27
Industrial Commended COMPANY: EPIC Painting Ltd PROJECT: Centenary Stand, Liverpool Football Club, Anfield Road, Liverpool CLIENT: Liverpool Football Club ARCHITECT: Mott McDonald MANUFACTURER: Jotun Paints The project was to undertake the painting of the Centenary Stand for Liverpool Football Club during the closed season of 2013. Cherry pickers and scaffold towers were used for access. Preparation of the steelwork was achieved using mechanical tools to reach a ST3 standard. All existing coatings were abraded to provide a key for the applied paint system. Brushes and rollers were the application methods used. Two patch coats of aluminium primer were followed by one coat of high build intermediate; and one coat of polyurethane finish completed the system. The client expressed satisfaction with the finished stand. Commended COMPANY: South Tyneside Homes Ltd PROJECT: Jarrow Town Hall Clock Refurbishment, Jarrow Town Hall, Grange Road, Jarrow CLIENT: South Tyneside Council MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints This was a relatively small project, but the clock was found very useful for those passing the Town Hall. Last painted some 20 years ago, it was found that serious deterioration had taken place to the clock house cantilevered above the pavement over the Town Hall entrance. Extensive repairs and preparation were necessary to ensure a further 10 years of service, using a two part filler; all metal surfaces were abraded to a clean, uncontaminated state before a rust inhibiting primer was followed by coats of high performance gloss. During the painting a specialist sub contractor had removed the clock and other metal detail. These were checked, tested and replaced before the scaffolding was removed. Well done to all concerned. 28 Premier Trophy Awards 2014

Samples were taken from walls and columns before work commenced; and once colours were agreed, work commenced to a tight programme. The whole areas have been transformed to their original colours and splendour. The Grand Saloon is exceptional, especially the columns and pilasters which were marbled in a unique way. Column heads have been gilded and the domed ceiling’s ornate plaster has been highlighted by the use of gold leaf. The entrance hall has received a similar treatment and the balustrading has also been refurbished to look like new. The statues have also been given a face lift. A job well done, carried out on time, congratulations also to the craftsmen on site. Well done! Very Highly Commended COMPANY: J Sandie and Son PROJECT: Private House on Abbotsford Road, North Berwick CLIENT: Private Client DESIGNER: Willa Elphingston MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints This is the final phase of returning an Elizabethan Style Manor House to its original concept (circa 1900) from a once family home, then a hotel, followed by conversion to approximately 8 apartments; and now back to a family home. The client began this project some 25 years ago with great style and taste, using an interior designer. Much attention to detail was required by the client, requiring regular visits to the site over the nine months of work. Extensive use of 12 variations of silk wall coverings and 96 rolls of wallpaper to the stairs and other circulation areas, which, following application, were then marked out with ashlar. Spray finishes were used, and fire retardant papers applied on ceilings. Free standing baths were decorated with coloured motifs etc. Decoration work to an excellent standard, congratulations to all, a team job throughout. Premier Trophy Awards 2014 29
Decorative Very Highly Commended COMPANY: Brook Decorators (London) Ltd PROJECT: Refurbishment of Berners Hotel (London Edition), 6-9 Berners Street, London CLIENT: Marriott International ARCHITECT: Shepherd Construction Ltd MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints Working for Shepherd Construction, this building had remained empty and deteriorated over several years. Worth approximately £700,000 for Brook Decorators, the challenge increased dramatically due to a change of ownership twice during the works. Because of the very poor state, the protection of the listed panel relief work from cornice and swags, through to ceiling panels has been tastefully completed by brush and spray. Complete decoration with standard paints to 173 bedrooms shows door painting to be as excellent as the cutting in to windows. The original and listed metal work to the lift cage and the balustrades, ornate ceilings to the main entrance and dining areas, plus other listed ornate and embellished ceilings are worthy of special mention. An excellent project, completed on time despite some difficult circumstances. Very Highly Commended COMPANY: UK Decs Limited PROJECT: Hammersmith Apollo, 45 Queen Caroline Street, Hammersmith, London CLIENT: AEG ARCHITECT: Edmund Wilson – Foster Wilson Architects MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade This contract was for the complete redecoration of the entire interior of the building. Preparatory work was carried out to mouldings and plasterwork to reinstate the theatre to its original Art Deco decoration. Tests to determine the original colours used were agreed to the satisfaction of English Heritage. Access was available using towers and mobile lifts. The whole building was light and airy with bold bright colours and gold and silver paint to columns and various mouldings. Corridors, with their long ceilings, were multi coloured as was the auditorium and stage area. The whole has brought back the era of Art Deco at its best. Well done to all who contributed. 30 Premier Trophy Awards 2014
Highly Commended COMPANY: David Fahey Decorators Ltd PROJECT: Inner Temple Hall, London CLIENT: The Honourable Society of The Inner Temple MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints The replacement of acoustic tiles and redecoration within this prestigious function hall in the Inner Temple has been carried out to a tight timescale and specification. The high ceiling required a birdcage scaffold to be erected after the stone floor was protected, which had to be brought in via a high level window, which had to be removed to facilitate entry. Picture plaques were removed from the high level walls and the wood panelling at the lower levels was protected. The acoustic tiles were replaced and the remaining areas of ceiling and cornice, with the walls above the wood panelling, were painted. Moulded plaster areas were picked out in gold paint. A time scale of five weeks was given for the whole project, including removal of scaffolding and replacing the portraits. On completion the client was happy with the work and the end result was a very tidy finish with the picked out gold looking very clean. A very nice project overall.
Decorative Highly Commended COMPANY: Lucas PROJECT: Decorative Works to Café Royal Hotel, Regent Street, London CLIENT: Alrov/Mace ARCHITECT: David Chipperfield MANUFACTURER: Dulux Trade/ Muralplast Lucas Ltd were brought into this major refurbishment at a late stage of the works when the main parts of the structural elements had been completed, although many of the M & E services were at 2nd fix stage. The main part of the decorator’s work being the treatment from preparation to decoration of a seven story helical stairway. The second part features access egress to each floor, then isolated areas to the large main staircase were completed after other trades had completed their works. A second main project followed with the complete refurbishment of the luxury dome suite at roof level with high standard heritage paints. Existing hardwood panelling to the Spa rooms was also prepared and treated to a high standard. An excellent project for an exacting client has been achieved here. Well done! Highly Commended COMPANY: Alfred Bagnall & Sons (Leeds) Ltd PROJECT: The Bronte Parsonage Museum, Haworth, Keighley, West Yorkshire CLIENT: Ann Dinsdale, Sonia Boocock DESIGNER: Allyson McDermot MANUFACTURER: Allyson McDermot Hand Made Products The museum has been restored to the way it was in 1830- 1855. The specification was very detailed, based on archaeological study. The bespoke wallpapers and paints were hand made and required applying with great skill, using the application methods in vogue then. This project has shown good skills in paperhanging and painting in various colours of distemper from Pear Blossom and Pipework to Lee Priory Verditer. All paints were brush applied to add to the authenticity of the finishes. The clients expressed great pleasure in the completed contract. 32 Premier Trophy Awards 2014
Highly Commended COMPANY: Ambrose Ellis Painting Contractors Ltd PROJECT: Victorian Gallery, Salford Museum & Art Gallery, Peel Park Crescent, Salford CLIENT: Friends (SMAG) MANUFACTURER: Johnstones The gallery is a “Listed” building and the room was used to exhibit the Lowry collection until this was transferred. The decoration was carried out over three weeks’ using mobile towers to access the ornate ceiling with its moulding. The cutting of the moulding’s different colours was excellent. The mobile towers had to be manipulated around large statues in the room, after they were properly protected from damage. The ceiling used four colours, all mouldings were white with gold paint picking out the white in some areas with a light or dark green in others. The dark green was used as a background for the wall hung pictures. During re-hanging some damage was found, which the painter then had to make good, including painting all visible picture fixings, using the wall colour. An arranged public opening evening meant all works had to be completed by this date. The head of the museum was very pleased with the project. An excellent job. Highly Commended COMPANY: South Tyneside Homes Ltd PROJECT: South Shields Town Hall Chamber, South Shields Town Hall & Civic Offices, Westoe Road, South Shields CLIENT: South Tyneside Council MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints The works being the complete redecoration to ceiling areas of the Council Chamber, with paint treatment to certain wall areas, as well as cleaning to the seating and hardwood panelling etc. With the seating remaining in place as were the lighting chandeliers, careful protection of these features became a vital requirement, as were the erection and dismantling of the bird cage scaffold used to access all areas. The chamber was last decorated approximately 10 years ago, but roof leakage had led to the need for redecoration and ceiling repairs. Because Council Meetings had to continue these had to allowed for. While the work used basic materials the attention to detail and consistency of standards had to be maintained. The work was good to very good. Premier Trophy Awards 2014 33
Special Judges Special Award for Excellence COMPANY: Rushworth Painting Contractors North West Ltd PROJECT: “Wallace and Gromit Ride”, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blackpool. CLIENT Blackpool Pleasure Beach MANUFACTURER: Crown Paints Very occasionally the Judges are called on to access and view an unusual project, such as this contract at the Blackpool Pleasure Beach. A “one off” project requiring the decorator to produce something quite unique, that is, to bring a moving film process to life, in this instance the “Wallace and Gromit” series. Set to a sequence of 28 separate scenes beside the rail track, each scene had Wallace and Gromit animated people, animals, vehicles; with all using the decorating skills of brush, roller, spray gun, air brushing in various materials to show finishes of Very Good to Excellent. The decorator has brought life to this series of characters with excellent effect. Also the retail shop attached required vast areas of paperhanging to ceiling and walls, which are worth a special mention; and the external balustrades are exceptional. Despite being in use for a season, very little distress is to be seen. An excellent job for a more than satisfied client. 34 Premier Trophy Awards 2014
