IOIC -3- - { 1 Project } INSTITUTE OF IOIC SOUTH AMERICA TOUR 2019 INCOHERENT CINEMATOGRAPHY For our 10-year anniversary we decided to organise a large tour through South America - along the lines of the first IOIC China Tour in 2012. In spring and summer of 2018 we 10-Year Anniversar y began with the preparations, did a lot of desk research and established all kinds of IOIC South America Tour contacts with possible partners in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. From 5 to 26 September September 2019 2018, Pablo Assandri (Artistic Director) went on a research trip to Rio de Janeiro, - Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santiago de Chile and Valparaíso and met with many potential «Adventures in Silent Film» partners, institutions and locations. The trip was financed by the Swiss Arts Council - Pro Helvetia. Buenos Aires (above) and Rio de Janeiro (below) are but two destinations of the IOIC South America Tour 2019. Chile Argentina For 10 years, the IOIC has been successfully organising extraordinary silent film festi- Brazil vals with contemporary live scores of diverse styles attracting not only the elderly but - also a younger crowd. Only in Zurich you can find a silent film festival of the kind. In the info@ioic.ch cities mentioned above, in the last 10 years there were only a few sporadic events www.ioic.ch where the music was actually playing at the same level as the film. The IOIC is now embarking on an expedition to South America to promote the image of silent film and its representation in the form of live setting to music. Among the many potential partners Pablo Assandri met on his research trip several have become good partners and are very enthusiastic about the project in September. These are for example Hernani Heffner, the director of the Cinemateca do MAM - Museu de Arte Moderno do Rio de Janeiro; Edu Marun, the artistic director of EPA CINE Fes- tival in Greater Buenos Aires; Alejandro Tantanián, the director of Teatro Nacional Cer- vantes in Buenos Aires; Roser Fort Aguilera, the director of Cine Arte Alameda in San- tiago de Chile; and the INSOMNIA team who has been renovating under difficult circumstances the amazingly beautiful Teatro Condell, a historic cinema of the silent era in Valparaíso where the opening event of the IOIC South America Tour will take place on 4 September 2019. Compared to Chile the cultural politics in Argentina and Brazil are a disaster. The cur- rency in Argentina has devaluated 81% last year and on 5 September 2018 president Mauricio Macri degraded the Ministry of Culture to a mere Secretariat. In Brazil, the situation is even worse. On 2 September 2019, i.e. Exactly one day after assuming office the newly elected openly racist, misogynist and anti-gay president Jair Bolsonaro closed the Ministry of Culture of Brazil. All our partners had the same word on their lips: «resistencia» or «resistência», meaning resistance but then also perseverance. DOCUMENTARY ON THE IOIC CHINA TOUR 2012 The Man Who Moved the Mountain (CH 2012, 37 min), Michelle Ettlin https://youtu.be/cIDAYLDNX7o The programme of the IOIC China Tour 2012 is attached in the appendix.
IOIC -4- - INSTITUTE IOIC SOUTH AMERICA PROMO TOUR - MAY 2019 OF INCOHERENT On our first meeting with the team of EPA – Festival de Cine Independiente de El Palo- CINEMATOGRAPHY mar in Greater Buenos Aires in September 2018 the idea came up to show a silent film - with live music at the next edition of the festival, i.e. on Saturday, 25 May 2019. After 10-Year Anniversar y long and careful consideration especially because of financial reasons Pro Helvetia IOIC South America Tour finally insisted and we decided in common to show the silent feature film «Häxan» September 2019 (1922) by Benjamin Christensen with a new live score by Iokoi (aka Mara Miccichè), one - of our most experienced musicians. Besides the main programme we also decided to «Adventures in Silent Film» show a selection of short experimental films by the feminist film pioneers Germaine - Dulac and Maya Deren with live scores by Iokoi and other local musicians. Chile Argentina Having decided this, we grasped the opportunity and organised a small tour through Experimental noise artist Dave Phillips making a live score for The Call of Cthulhu by Andrew Leman. Brazil Chile, Argentina and Brazil in order to promote the large tour in September. To mark the - difference between both tours and to make the largest possible impact with as little info@ioic.ch resources as necessary we decided to keep the first tour small and simple. This promo www.ioic.ch tour financed again by Pro Helvetia was the ideal opportunity to present the IOIC to our potential audiences in September and we are sure it will make a big difference for the success of the large tour. Last but certainly not least, it strengthened the relationships with our local partners and therefore will make the whole project more sustainable. IOIC SOUTH AMERICA TOUR - SEPTEMBER 2019 For its 10th anniversary, the IOIC is organizing a tour through Chile, Argentina and Brazil in September 2019 where it will present a selection of silent fictional and documentary films showing daring adventures and glorious expeditions as well as films which are daring and adventurous regarding their own cinematic form. Science fiction films exploring the fantastic world of newest technologies, ethnographic and documentary films at the edge of the civilized world, expedition and travelogue films, the conquest of far-away locations like the South Pole, the top of Mount Everest or even planet Mars, experimental films exploring the dream-like character of the modern medium film, etc. All these silent films will be presented with new live scores by internationally renowned Argentinian, Brazilian, Chilean, and Swiss musicians from different genres – from jazz and improvised music to post-rock, live electronics and contem- porary experimental music. The IOIC South America Tour will show a representative glimpse of what the IOIC has been doing in the last 10 years. In this time, the city of Zurich has become the capital of innovative silent film scoring. Nowhere else you will find a similar platform allowing musicians from all musical styles to get into a dialogue with the audience via the world of silent film. The IOIC’s approach to this artistic past is never a nostalgic one but it is always trying to open up the past via the present into the future.
IOIC -5- - { 2 Selection Programme } INSTITUTE OF IOIC IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA INCOHERENT CINEMATOGRAPHY A Great Mosaic of Modern Arts - 10-Year Anniversar y One of the highlights of the tour will be the screening of «L’Inhumaine» with the IOIC IOIC South America Tour Improvisers Orchestra, an orchestra of Swiss and local musicians of each city espe- September 2019 cially coming together for this occasion. A year before the Exposition internationale - des Arts Décoratifs et industriels modernes of 1925, where the word Art déco would «Adventures in Silent Film» come into being, Marcel L’Herbier reached for a big feat. With «L’Inhumaine» he cre- - ated a synthesis of all the arts together with his generation’s most exceptional artists, Chile just as the theoretician Ricciotto Canudo had demanded it for the cinema. His manifest Argentina for modern French art and technology unites design by Alberto Cavalcanti, Claude Brazil Autant-Lara and Fernand Leger, architecture by Robert Mallet-Stevens, costumes by - Paul Poiret, furniture by Pierre Chareau and Michel Dufet, ballet by Jean Börlin and The IOIC Improvisers Orchestra 2014 making a live score for L’Inhumaine by Marcel L’Herbier. info@ioic.ch music by Georges Antheil und Darius Milhaud – which has since been lost – to create www.ioic.ch one large ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’. The film is defined by an aesthetic of the mechanic, with its abstracting montage, frag- mentation of objects and dream of a panoptic vision. It not only testifies to how an eclectic group of artists from all disciplines imagined the union of modernity and tech- nology but also how French universalism of the 1920s staged the categories of human- ity and inhumanity. Thus, personified inhumanity in the form of prima donna Claire Lescot only finds back to humanity when she is introduced to fantastic world of newest technology by scientist Einar Norsen that restores her to new life. The IOIC will be showing the film with a new musical performance under the direction of Luis Conde (ARG) and Florian Stoffner (CH). An orchestra of ten improvising musi- cians from different genres – from classical, to jazz, rock and contemporary experimen- tal music – will be representing the film’s two central themes: technology vs. modernity, humanity vs. inhumanity. Alongside traditional and modern instruments, a number of self-conceived electronic instruments built especially for this film performance act as extensions to the human body. IOIC -6- - INSTITUTE THE CINEMATOGRAPHIC HIMALAYAS OF INCOHERENT Neither Gorge Mallory nor his partner Andrew «Sandy» Irvine survived the legendary CINEMATOGRAPHY third attempt to climb the Mount Everest in the year 1924. The last time they were seen - was only 250 meters from the top. Even today, 20 years after finding their bodies people 10-Year Anniversar y keep speculating if they actually did or did not reach the top before their death. How- IOIC South America Tour ever, it cannot be disputed that epic attempt will be alive for posterity through the September 2019 breathtakingly atmospheric moving pictures of Captain John Noel. With a hand-held - camera he followed the expedition up to 7000 meters altitude and then still continued «Adventures in Silent Film» filming the events further up with a specially fabricated telescopic lense. - Chile The live score for the striking imagery of this fatal expedition to the Himalayas will be Argentina done by the Swiss trio Elgar with Hans Koch on reeds, Florian Stoffner on electric guitar Brazil and Lionel Friedli on drums. - info@ioic.ch Silent film: The Epic of Everest (UK 1924, 86 min), J.B.L. THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PLANTS The time-lapse film «The Miracle of Flowers» for a first time makes visible in large scale the continuous movements of plants. The raw material is taken out of a promotional film for fertilizer. In combination with pantomimic dance scenes representing the growth and proper motions of plants this film on the life and death of plants becomes a visu- ally enchanting example of the so-called Kulturfilm. The score of the film is done by Tout Bleu, the new band of the Geneva singer and gui- tarist Simone Aubert (Massicot, Hyperculte) with Pol Sinus on live electronics and Agathe Max on violin. IOIC -7- - INSTITUTE THE FUGACITY OF PARADISE OF INCOHERENT Ever since the world was circumnavigated the islands of the south seas have been a CINEMATOGRAPHY projection screen for the desires of the so-called civilised world. That this longing also - bears the seed of destruction of the longed-for is painfully shown in this first film shot 10-Year Anniversar y on location in Tahiti. The pearl traders shamelessly capitalize on the innocence of the IOIC South America Tour natives and the newly introduced alcohol literally finishes them off. Only a doctor, him- September 2019 self fallen for the firewater, tries to resist but is alone in opposing the destructive forces. The sad tropicaal electro sounds of Bitter Moon fitting perfectly to the White Shadows in the South Seas by Robert Flaherty. - «Adventures in Silent Film» This visually impressive swansong on the search for the ideal island got the second - Academy Award for Best Camera in 1928 and will be shown with a new live score by Chile Bitter Moon, the tropical electro duo of Réka Csiszér and Simone Bernardoni. Argentina Brazil - Silent film: White Shadows in the South Seas (US 1928, 89 min), W.S. van Dyke & info@ioic.ch Robert Flaherty www.ioic.ch Live score: Bitter Moon Réka Csiszér (voc, elec) & Simone Bernardoni (elec) https://bittermoon.bandcamp.com/ HP LOVECRAFT «The Call of Cthulhu» is the most famous short story by cult author HP Lovecraft. The globe-trotting adventure film takes the tripartite construction of the narration and moves from the 1920s via the year 1908 to the 1870s and back again. And, the story embodies HPL’s nihilistic world view, his cosmic perspective, and his sense that man- kind is doomed by its own insignificance. The live score for this silent film of the 21st century will be done by Dave Phillips. In his collaborations with the IOIC he has specialised in contemporary silent films. With his diverse electronic equipment, he manipulates with virtuosity his huge archive of field recordings in real-time. Silent film: The Call of Cthulhu (US 2005, 47 min), Andrew Leman Live score: Dave Phillips (elec, voc) http://www.davephillips.ch/ We are still working on the programme. It will be published online on 1 July 2019 and in print on 5 August 2019.
