Training and Exercises

➢ Training events are an excellent opportunity for CERT members to practice,
assess and improve emergency response plans and have hands-on operations
while engaging volunteers and refreshing the concepts and skills learned in
    the CERT Academy.

➢ CERT exercises are developed according to national guidelines and principles
outlined by the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program. It is
important that CERT programs tailor their exercises to reflect realistic events
that may impact their community and practice skills they will likely use the
    most.

Radio Checks and Siren Tests

DMC Skywarn conducts weekly radio checks, this year check-ins totaled 360 volunteer hours. This is a great
opportunity for Skywarn and CERT members to practice using their radios and check-in with Weather Ops.

DMC Skywarn also conducts monthly tests of the outdoor warning sirens at 6pm on the first Wednesday of
each month. All sirens with the exception of Mediapolis sound for 2 minutes, stop for 5 minutes, then sound
again briefly until they are shut down.
                                                                                               Burlington Locations

Note: IAAP also takes this opportunity to test their sirens during our monthly tests. ▪ Sunnyside
Danville also tests their sirens during this time, but are controlled by city officials, not
SKYWARN and DESCOM.
Activations

Although we have had many Activations throughout the year, this is an example of what we have had
in just the last two months:

 ▪ May 17th – Field Net – 442
 ▪ May 22nd – Tornado Watch – 403
 ▪ May 24th – Tornado Watch – 403
 ▪ May 25th – Thunderstorm (Resource) – 403
 ▪ May 27th – Tornado (EF0) – 403
 ▪ May 28th – Flash Flooding – 474

 ▪ June 5th – Severe Weather – 474/423
 ▪ June 15th – 3 Tornados (EF0 & 2 EF2) – 474
Storm Spotting

During activations, our trained Skywarn weather spotters are sent out to various areas of
Des Moines County to watch for severe weather activity. Spotters help by reporting things
such as heavy rain, flooding, hail, wind, abnormal cloud formation, funnel clouds, tornados
debris, and other severe weather conditions.
Severe Weather Event Support

Des Moines County Skywarn also does severe weather support for events
in and around Des Moines County, some of these events include:

 Steamboat Days
 Farmer’s Market
 Des Moines County Fair
 Youth Jamboree
 Outdoor concerts at Westland Mall
 RAGBRAI (2019)
