Welcome to Marrara Christian College
Primary School
Live in Truth. Grow in Wisdom.
Vision Statement
‘We desire to be a Christian community, learning together to live life as
God intended, offering hope for the world’.
Mission Statement
‘Marrara Christian College seeks to be a learning community where
parents and staff partner together, and where students are nurtured
through a loving, biblically based school curriculum to build their faith,
character and desire to serve.’Primary School Information
Nestled in amongst the beautiful gardens at Marrara
Christian College, you will discover a vibrant, Christ
centred community of learners. The primary school is
a place where our students are nurtured, loved and
valued. Each student is recognised, seen and heard
for the treasured child they are, and we seek to identify, develop and grow each one’s
unique gifts and skills. We are a community who strives to build faith, character, and
a desire to serve within our immediate and wider community. Our curriculum grows
from our desire to see formational learning in each lesson area; where minds are
developed, hearts are captivated and hands are equipped to serve. Students are
encouraged to invite curiosity, develop courage and explore creativity in their learning
as they connect skills and understanding to their immediate and wider contexts.
Within this booklet, you will find many details about our primary school at Marrara
Christian College. While this information may answer some of your questions, we
are very interested to meet you and your family and we encourage you to contact
our enrolments officer so that we can organise a time to meet you and show you
around our beautiful school.
2Our values
From the moment each child steps into Marrara, regardless of what year they begin
their journey, they are welcomed into our family. Each classroom and cohort
becomes a place of belonging and every child has a place to grow in their learning
and faith.
Faith is fostered as students grow in their identity and learn about God and his
great love for each person.
Character formation throughout the College is cultivated through our RiSe CoDe:
Right Choices, Service, Compassion and Dedication. In the Primary School, we also
have a strong emphasis on our expectations: Respect, Responsibility, Maximised
Learning and Kindness.
As students move through the years, these behaviours and characteristics are
practiced in a supportive, safe environment, and become part of our language
adopted by all members of our College community as we grow together as a family.
3Our parents
It is a privilege to have the joy of partnering with parents in the growth of each precious
child. We value the contribution parents bring into our College, and seek to walk your
child’s educational journey closely with you. Your partnership is not only valued, but
encouraged, and we look forward to welcoming your family into ours.
Our staff
Each staff member working in the primary school at Marrara seeks to create a
loving, nurturing environment for their students. Our highly committed teachers work
in teams dedicated to ensuring effective curriculum development and quality
teaching and learning to encourage each child to reach their potential. Our staff are
also engaged in each students’ social, emotional, and spiritual growth and wellbeing.
Each staff member has an active faith and the heart of our classrooms are centred
in Christ, oriented to developing creative, courageous and curious learners.
4Our Curriculum
At Marrara Christian College, we strive to create curriculum that focuses not only on
skills and understanding, but also on formational learning. Formational learning
develops the mind, captivates the heart and equips the hands, encouraging curious
and courageous learners to explore God’s world and to live out the hope of Christ.
This partners with our vision and mission statements, to build faith, character and a
desire to serve, offering hope to the world. Students actively engage in high quality
teaching and learning, and as their skills and
understandings grow, they are encouraged and
invited to participate in contributing to their
immediate and wider communities.
Through all curriculum, intentional threads are woven into each learning area,
connecting learning to real life and fostering formational learning.
This learning is grounded in our metanarrative:
“God loves us, we are God’s people, living in God’s place, under His authority, doing
justice and loving mercy, walking humbly with God, to be equipped to therefore go
and make disciples.”
Some of the programs we use to support our curriculum include:
- Transformation by Design
- Jesus Storybook Bible Curriculum
- The King, the snake and the promise/Meet the King
- Nelson Maths
- Matific
- Soundwaves Spelling
- STAR/Accelerated Reader
- PM reading
- Reading Eggs
- MyOn reading
- Typing Tournament
5Areas of learning
Learning is strengthened when it is connected, coherent and
relevant. While the Australian Curriculum is separated into
sections, we seek to connect these areas of learning where
possible. As well as English and Maths, our Connected Units
include: History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship,
Science, Design and digital technologies, and social sciences.
Additional learning areas include visual, performing and media
arts, Languages Japanese, Health and PE and Library. As a
teaching staff, we endeavour to meet the needs of every student
academically, spiritually, socially, emotionally and physically.
Primary School Structure
Regardless of whether a class is a single year level or multi-year, our teaching and
learning programs are intentionally created to meet your child’s development and
learning style, encouraging them to grow and shine in their learning. Working
collaboratively in teams is a core value in our teaching staff and quite often classes
are mixed up and changed depending on the learning area. This enables students to
learn in different cohorts and social groupings. The structure of our primary school is
designed to ensure maximised learning is enabled for all students.
6Sports
Throughout each year, Primary classes are involved in the following
sporting events:
Primary School Athletics Carnival
Whole School Swimming Carnival
Whole School Cross Country Run
Students in Years 4 to 6 are
regularly invited to be involved in
competitive sports with students from other
schools at Cluster days. Development Officers from NT
School Sport attend these events and individuals are
often chosen to represent the Northern Territory.
Swimming
All classes attend eight swimming lessons with ‘Swim and
Survive’ at the Casuarina Swimming Pool each year. This
program generally takes place throughout Term 1 for Years 1-
6, and Term 3 for Transition.
7Camp Programs
Camps are a special time for students to deepen their relationships with their peers
and teachers. We intentionally choose camps that enable positive interactions and
challenges, and encourage exploration and engagement with our local community,
culture and context.
Year 3/4 Camp
Year 3/4 have alternate two-day camps. In our ‘odd
years’, students travel to the Territory Wildlife Park,
exploring the different environments and habitats,
linked closely to their studies and the metanarrative
component of ‘living in God’s place’.
In our ‘even years’, students participate in a city camp. This
involves travelling around Darwin City, participating in a range
of challenges, activities and experiences, and sleeping
overnight at school. Both camps encourage students to grow
together in a greater appreciation of the world they live in.
8Year 5/6 Camp
The Year 5/6 ‘even year’ camp is held at Adventure Bound, Base
Camp Wallaroo. Here, each student is encouraged to participate in
rock climbing, abseiling, high and low ropes courses, flying fox, team
activities and orienteering. Students are challenged in each
experience as they learn about themselves as individuals and as
team members working together.
Every ‘odd year’, our Year 5 and 6 students travel to Kakadu National
Park where they experience the
majesty of God’s creation through a number of walks,
culture activities, ranger talks and team challenges.
Students learn to overcome difficulties and encourage
one another in each challenge, amidst stunning
displays of God’s glorious creation.
Excursions and Incursions
We know that learning doesn’t happen just within the classroom, so every opportunity
we get, we are travelling into the community, or inviting the community to visit us. We
have a variety of places we intentionally visit to deepen our learning and connect our
understanding with our local context. We enjoy a range of visiting professionals
including Questacon and the Life Education Van who continue to inspire and engage
our students each year.
Defence Schools Transition Aide and school chaplain
Moving states, towns and schools can be challenging, and our Defence families are
familiar with the regular moving which goes with their service in the Forces. Our
Defence Schools Transition Aide regularly checks in with our children and their
families, both in the transitioning phases and also throughout their time posted in
Darwin. Both our DSTA and chaplain are available to our families.
9Assemblies
Assemblies are a time of gathering as a whole primary family once a week. We
encourage parents and families to join us as we celebrate learning, engage in songs
of praise and worship and encourage each other.
Primary classes take it in turns to lead assembly, sharing
their talents and achievements. Occasionally, we also
gather as a whole College for special events, These are
communicated to our families on our College calendar.
Partnering with Parents
At Marrara Christian College, it is one of our greatest desires to ‘Partner with Parents’.
We believe that it is crucial that we work together with parents, supporting our students
in a united front as children grow and develop into the people God intends for them to
be. Our teachers strive to maintain a healthy flow of
communication with parents and endeavour to be
available after school, through phone calls, via email,
as well as through newsfeeds on our parent portal in
Compass, our school management system.
We love to hear from you! It is important that we are
able to share together as a Marrara family, so please let us know about family
situations such as moving house, having interstate visitors, parents travelling for work,
and celebratory praise points or success stories.
As parents, you play an incredible role in your child’s
view of education, so we encourage you to read
regularly to and with your child, be involved in their
learning of words and actively seek out ways you can
support your child in their learning, regardless of their
age or year level. We also welcome your attendance
on camps and excursion and encourage you to be
involved in the myriad of ways available.
10Student Leadership
Year 6 is an exciting time of leadership opportunities within the primary school.
Our Year 5/6 teachers focus on leadership
development in both Year 5 and 6, with Year 6
students engaging in roles of
leadership, service and
responsibility. As well as the possibility of leading their House as
captain/vice-captain, students in Year 6 are rostered on to serve
in a variety of roles including setting up and leading assemblies
and representing the school.
Lunch boxes and lunch orders
Students have the opportunity to order lunch from the canteen any day of the
week. Orders are written on a paper bag and placed in the lunch order tubs in
rooms which are sent down at the beginning of each day.
We encourage and foster healthy eating at school. Please
make sure your child has a full lunch box with healthy and
sustainable food. Packets of chips and sweet biscuits,
although tasty, are not sustainable
and children are often hungry again soon after. Fruits,
vegetables, dairy such as yoghurt and cheese as well
as whole grain foods are much better options. Children are supervised at lunch
and must eat their ‘main food’ such as their sandwich or equivalent prior to eating
their ‘sometimes food’.
Due to a number of children with allergies, please ensure nuts, peanut butter and
other nut products are not placed in your child’s lunchbox.
