Christmas Jumper Day
Once again over the festive period we pulled out all the stops and donned our
favourite Christmas jumpers and outfits. Thank you so much to all the offices that took
part and helped raise £2,000 for Age UK and Save the Children.

Other offices also took part, raising money for local charities of their choice. The
Edinburgh office donated £330 raised on its Christmas Jumper Day to Radio Forth’s
Cash for Kids Mission Christmas Appeal. The charity helps children across Edinburgh,
the Lothians and Fife who are disadvantaged through poverty, sickness or disability.

Donation
The BD team that came from Duncan Lawrie found itself
with £56,000 in a dormant client account that needed to be
donated to charity. The money was from an account that was
set up in the 1950s with the intention of using it for education
purposes in Malawi. With that in mind, the money was divided
between several charities that work both in Africa and in the
UK. Here are a couple of the responses we received from the
African based charities.

From African Vision Malawi:
“We are very grateful to you for thinking of us and your donation Newcastle’s champions
will certainly assist enormously with our educational aims.
The @BrewinNewcastle office team of ‘CHUF Champions’ met
“We have just built an incredible training village, like a rural with Michelle from @CHUFOfficial to plan a Dragon’s Den style
technical college. We believe this is the first of its type perhaps presentation of fundraising ideas. CHUF, or Children’s Heart
in Africa and should go a long way to train people out of Unit Fund, aims to make life better for children and young
poverty. We are very much about giving a hand-up, rather than people who are born with or develop heart conditions by
handouts. It goes live this year and is called Sam’s Village. supporting them and their families.

“Many local people have little or no education; therefore, we
provide basic adult numeracy and literacy training. Included
in the training courses will be business development to equip
trainees with the confidence to start their own business.”

From Malawi Education Link:
“I’m leaving for Malawi on Thursday and hope, rains permitting,
to be able to initiate the building of two more classroom blocks
with this incredibly generous donation. That will mean some
370 primary school children will be able to learn under shelter”.

Well North Painting
Following our sponsorship of the Well North and Onna
Bike women’s ride in Girlington last year, we were delighted
that Well North’s artist Matt Worden came into the London
office to present us with one of the pictures he painted to
commemorate the ride. He was joined by Lord Mawson who
is Executive Chairman of Well North, a project in the north of
England that aims to connect local people, health experts,
public services, businesses, voluntary groups and community
organisations which are all eager to make a difference. Other
pieces of Matt Worden’s work are currently begin displayed in

Small Grants
We are really pleased to have had such a positive uptake in
small grant applications in the last few months.

We would like to remind everyone about the benefits of being able to support small
local charities in which you are personally involved. If you can demonstrate a personal
involvement with a local organisation that makes a difference to your community, then
why not nominate it for a small grant. Are you a volunteer, trustee, or fundraiser for a
local charity or do you benefit from the work that a charity does? If you are not sure if
your choice of charity qualifies, check out the Small Grant FAQs on BDi or give Rosie

Stephen Carpenter recently took part in the ‘London Revolution’ event that sees
cyclists ride 300km around London over two days, with a night of camping in
the middle at Windsor Racecourse. The first day of riding was cold and wet and
Stephen spent a lot of time helping others with their punctures. By the second day,
the weather was better, and he finished a fantastic 200th out of 1,500. Well done
Stephen for raising £850 for Cancer Research UK.
