Hear From Our Award Recipients Wyatt Grow /Region 2 Scholarship - The field for me is like my second home. It is where I can let off steam, I can let go of all my problems (even if it’s just for a little while) and relax. Soccer isn't just an escape from life, it is a teacher. It has taught me many important concepts like teamwork, strength, and leadership. I owe a lot to the game and I will forever be grateful for being able to play "The Beautiful Game." My advice for other players is to first have fun. Remember above all else that this is a game and you should learn to enjoy all aspects of it. The biggest thing that will help you grow as a player is to be willing to push yourself past your boundaries and to not be afraid to ask questions. Erin Bailey / Region 2 Scholarship - Soccer is my passion and I love everything about it. If I could play soccer all day, I would. I am so grateful for the experiences and opportunities that soccer has given me. My favorite memories from my childhood are moments when I was playing soccer or being with my teammates. Now, I am living one of my dreams everyday playing at BYU and playing the game that I love. Another thing I love about soccer is the opportunity to grow and improve everyday. I have learned so many lessons from soccer that I apply to my life. I love the passion and emotion that is in the game of soccer and the fact that I can express myself through the game.
Dyllan Larsen / Region 3 Scholarship - My passion for the game of soccer has always made me pursue my goals in life. My coaches have taught me several life lessons throughout the years and I plan to continue to make my friends and family proud for all the work I've put in thus far. Soccer wasn't just a game for me, it was a learning experience that I will never forget because of all the hot summer practices, the out of state tournaments where I got to stay in a room with my friends, and then of course the games where I got to release all of my stress and have fun kicking the ball around. Hannah Spackman /Region 3 Scholarship - Soccer has always been an outlet for me. When I have things I can’t get off my mind soccer has always helped. Soccer has made so many opportunities possible for me. I’m so thankful to be chosen for this award this year. I can’t express how grateful I am for all the love and support I’ve felt throughout my soccer career. This award is so amazing and I’m so glad soccer brought me to it. The most helpful thing for days where I don’t want to go to practice or I don’t want to work my hardest is, remembering why I started.
Paul Kim / Region 4 Scholarship - Soccer has always been an integral part of my life. Ever since I was little, I have loved playing the sport and this has pushed me to improve as a player. Soccer has also taught me many important lessons in my life and has shaped the person that I have become. By playing in high-level soccer games like the National and Regional Championship Finals, I have learned the importance of diligence and resilience. I am really honored and very grateful to receive the 2022 UYSA Senior Scholarship for Region 4. Alexis Jennings / Region 4 Scholarship - I was so eager to play the game I loved and was determined to be the best that I could be at it. I found myself staying late after practice or going out to practice on the off days to improve my technical skills. My love for the game continues to grow and when I am older I want to become a coach and help the next generation of soccer players find the same passion for the game I have. I am honored to been chosen for this award. Soccer has had a huge impact on my life and I am so excited that I can go on and play at a collegiate level. This award will help me be able to focus on soccer and my academics in college.
Carden Decker / Region 5 Scholarship - My passion goes beyond just the game. I love the unity and the brotherhood that comes along with it. This game brings people together, oftentimes creating relationships that will last far beyond the last game of the season. I love these guys. They’re the reason that I play to win, not for pride, but for the boys next to me. Along with that, I love the ability to push myself beyond the limits both physically and mentally. It provides challenges that other sports or activities simply can’t. Ellie Walbruch / Region 5 Scholarship - I love soccer! Everything about it – training, playing, watching it, the teammates I’ve gotten to surround myself with, the awesome trainers I have had, the amazing coaches that have made me the player I am, and of course the time I have gotten to spend with my family along the way. UYSA has been a huge part of my life and I am so grateful for the opportunities that they have given me through Club soccer, ODP and also national recognition. I have grown up playing for my club LaRoca and I am extremely proud to represent not only them, but also Utah and Region 5.
Dagan Murray / Region 6 Scholarship - I enjoy soccer as a way to de-compress and do something that I enjoy. It's also a great way to stay active. I was not very passionate about soccer when I was younger, but as I have gotten older, I have realized that the effort and time that it requires has helped me in other areas of life. It is definitely my preferred sport to play. I'm excited to receive this award as it will help cover the extra tuition expenses that my merit scholarship doesn't cover. It will allow me to study what I am interested in without acquiring the debt that comes with it. Courtney Hillyard / Region 6 Scholarship - I have spent half my life playing or reffing UYSA games, and know what this program does for people. When I was asking people for letters of recommendation, I loved going through and being able to read what those people thought of me. I feel as if I have truly earned this scholarship with the amount of work I have put into this sport, and I'm so grateful that UYSA has recognized me for that. Don't ever give up on what you are wanting to accomplish. If I had just been okay with playing on a younger, not as good of a team, I never would have turned into the player I am today.
Sailor Jensen / Susan K. Madsen Service Award - I feel super blessed to have received The Susan K Madsen Service Scholarship! Just like Susan Madsen I love supporting those around me and I love to laugh! This award will help me so much with school and I am so thankful to have gotten this scholarship. Soccer is how I express myself. I am my truest self when I am playing. Some advice for younger players is to give it your all always, win or lose. If you give it your all and do everything you can, it will feel so much better regardless of the outcome because knowing that you put it all on the field is an amazing feeling! Not to say losing doesn’t hurt, you just won’t wonder what if you could have given more. Millie Terrion / Susan K. Madsen Service Award - I am passionate about soccer because I love being part of a team. All of the friendships I have gained throughout my many years of playing soccer have helped me develop socially and I am grateful to have spent time with so many different people. I’ve been fortunate to have great coaches at every level I’ve played at. This has helped me become coachable and humble. My advice for younger players would be to be a good teammate both on the field and off the field. Always show good sportsmanship while competing at your best if you show kindness to everyone this will spill over into your community and all you do.
Carli Olson | Youth Referee of the Year - I have grown up playing soccer since I was 4 years old. I absolutely love the game of soccer. Soccer has taught me so many life lessons. It will always be something I love to play and watch. Soccer will always be a part of my life, if I’m not playing, I’ll be refereeing. I feel so honored to be able to receive this award. I would not be able to be here without my many referee assignors and fellow referees. I’m grateful for UYSA for giving me the opportunity to ref every year and continue to be a part of the game of soccer. Kyler Baker | Youth Referee of the Year - My passion for being a referee is that I love being on the pitch each and every game, and meeting all types of players and referees. I am always excited to referee and that’s what I look forward in doing each and every week. I am so grateful that I have received this award, and it really shows that hard work pays off. I have done tournaments like Regionals, State cup, and Showcases like ECNL, and DPL.
Addison Rigtrup | E4A Athlete of the Year - I am so grateful to have received the Especially For Athletes scholarship! This is an amazing award and I feel so honored. I’m very thankful to be a part of such an amazing program that does so much good. Because of it I try to “keep my eyes up” and look for ways to help others. I try to be a better friend to those around me and set a good example. Some advice that I would give to younger players is to enjoy the game. Remember why you choose to play this sport and let that be your motivation. Being able to go out on a field and play with your teammates is such a fun experience and never forget that! Yes, sometimes you will lose and that sucks, but being able to be out of the field and experience the emotions that the game brings is such a blessing, so enjoy it! Katelyn Anderson | TOP Soccer Buddy of the Year - I love enabling people of all abilities to play this game. Being a special needs soccer coach isn't about how good you are at playing soccer, but how good you are at loving the kids you coach. I love the kids that are on my team and I look forward to seeing them each week of soccer season, and I am sad every time the season ends. Coaching a special needs soccer team comes with its own challenges and I have had to get creative as I find new games to play that keep the kids engaged and excited as I teach them how to play soccer.
L30 Shock 08 | Matthew Conrad Scholarship - From head coach, Jeff Morris: This team came from a Davis County Rec program years ago. My whole goal was to teach the kids proper skills, technique and how to play the game so they would grow to love the game the way I love the game. In June 2021, we competed in Far West Regionals in Boise, Idaho. FC Shock went 6-0, defeating our rival in the championship game, punching our ticket to a 4 team National Championship, held in Sarasota, Florida in July, where we competed strongly in every game, scoring goals against 2 different teams that hadn't been scored on in months. What I love most about coaching this team is the overall sense of family and community we have. The girls LOVE each other. The parents are so supportive and fun to be around and are so encouraging of this team!
Terri Baker | Administrator of the Year - my advice to anyone coming up as an admin or an adult participant of any kind in youth soccer, it would be to remember that soccer is a game that favors the creative. The game itself encourages players to use their own creativity and teamwork to be successful. When kids get to use their own creativity, athleticism, teamwork and decision-making on the field, that’s when they have the most fun. When we over-direct, over coach, or over organize, we diminish what is rewarding for the kids, and we limit their capacity to learn from their own experiences. It is this this aspect of the game of soccer, that I have loved the most: that the game at it’s purest encourages kids to socialize, work together, be active, and problem solve in real time. Wendy Christiansen | Parent of the Year - I am extremely humbled to receive this award. I don't consider the things I'm doing as great or wonderful, but just doing what I can to help out. Every season I will put together a list of when all the games are and try to figure out how to make it to all of the games. Unfortunately, I don't think I have been able to get to every game as some games there would be 2 or 3 games at exactly the same time but I love getting to as many as possible. In fact, once all 4 of my children were playing soccer I was trying to get to over 50 games a season. I have been the team manager for each of my kids at one point in their soccer career and I currently manage my two youngest children's soccer teams. I decided I wanted to do more with the game and about 8 years ago I decided to play and organized a group of moms on our team to play women's indoor soccer.
Mondis Neff | Girls Competitive Coach of the Year - I want to express my gratitude for this recognition. I love to coach soccer. I have a passion for the game. The true joy I find is using soccer as a means to teach life lessons to these kids. I grew up playing soccer and I feel like it shaped me, and so I love playing that role and helping these kids navigate life, challenges, and obstacles all while doing the sport they love. There is no better way to learn these skills than by doing it playing soccer and I love being a part of that. When our players feel seen, valued and inspired they will achieve far more than anything we could expect – as individuals and as a team. It’s a players game and I have been privileged beyond measure to have coached some of the best of the best. Lee Davis | Boys Competitive Coach of the Year - To me, soccer is much more than a sport, it can change lives, improve communities and provides so many opportunities for people. It unites so many people around the world. It’s a great honor to receive this award, and follow so many fantastic coaches who have previously received it. There are so many great coaches doing great things here in Utah, so it was unexpected to find out that I am this year’s recipient. I have been fortunate to have been around a lot of good people that have challenged me, and helped me grow, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with and around these amazing players and people in such a great community.
Emma Neff | TOSH Female Athlete of the Year - I am so honored and humbled to have been selected as UYSA 2022 Athlete of the Year. As we all know, soccer is the ultimate team game; and really this award is a little about me, and a lot about all the many who helped me along the way. Soccer is my passion. It has taught me so much - the joy of being part of a team, how to respond to both triumph and disaster and the price of excellence. My advice to younger players is to enjoy the journey. Find joy in every touch, every tear, every training. My favorite quote is from Picasso, and I relate it to my soccer journey. "Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working." Owen Knecht | TOSH Male Athlete of the Year - Soccer is everything to me and I have been able to see hard work pay off. My favorite part about the game is whenever you touch the ball or step onto the field your mind goes clear and all of the worries or stresses disappear. Your mind is clear and you just want to work hard for your team and win the game. I am very grateful to receive this award and it is a huge accomplishment for me. It is my favorite thing to see all of my hard work pay off. If I could say one thing to the younger players it would be to touch a ball every single day or do something that will help your soccer ability. There is never an off day. If you want to be the best you, you have to do something every single day.
John Gygi | Kirk Hoerschall Hall of Fame Inductee - John Gygi has severed the soccer community in Utah since even before some of tonight’s awards recipients were born. In addition to coaching for both Sparta United and Blue Knights, John has served as an active member in the region and state association level for the past 18 years. Starting in 2002, John served in both the Vice Chairman and Chairman of the District 3 region of UYSA until he was elected as Utah Youth Soccer’s First Vice President in 2009. John served in that capacity for the following 10 years, during which time he was directly involved in many improvements to organized soccer in Utah. In addition to his direct contributions in rewriting the UYSA bylaws and policies, John has also been involved with the management of UYSA finances, as well as being involved first hand on the player development level. John holds a B coaching license. John has coached in the Olympic Development Program for the past 9 years, including his involvement with the 2009 Boys this year. John’s passion for soccer stems from his own personal love for the game. As a young athlete, John played his high school years at Brighton High School, before continuing his soccer career at Washington State in St. Louis. In the 35 years since, John has played as a member for various teams and divisions, including participating in National Tournaments for the over-30, over-40, and over-48 age groups. Most recently, John competed in the over-55 division of the Kings Cup tournament in Las Vegas. He has traveled all over the US coaching teams or supporting his children as they have participated in soccer. John currently serves as the Chairman of the Rules and Revisions Committee for UYSA, as well as being a member of the Player Development Committee. John is also heavily involved in the establishment of a Soccer Complex which will be placed on the Schivwits Indian Reserve and will service the Southern Utah Area. His past and current dedication and service to UYSA and soccer in general is immense and he is well deserving of this award.
David Mills | Kirk Hoerschall Hall of Fame Inductee - David Mills has been a prominent figure in the soccer community for the last 25 years. He has served as coach, league 29 president, district 4 president, region 2 director, member of the disciplinary committee, referee, and referee mentor. David’s interest in the sport started when he served as a coach for his children. Beginning with AYSO youth soccer, he ordered VHS tapes to learn how to coach. He quickly learned the rules of the game and caught on to the spirit of the sport. He continued serving as coach for many years, got his coaching license, and took teams to premier levels and championships. He found joy watching his players progress from learning how to kick a ball to move on to play at high school and collegiate levels. Some of his own players have become coaches themselves. Even after his kids were grown, David still served as a coach for the Wasatch Soccer Club. In one instance, a Wasatch coach had to step down for medical reasons. David volunteered to help as coach when his community needed it most. David first started refereeing because he was passionate about his kids learning the rules of the game and being members of the soccer community. He reffed for nearly 20 years - long after his kids stopped playing soccer. As age gets the best of us (also known as knee replacements), David’s referee career converted from running down the fields to mentoring and training referees. He helped referees by providing feedback for improvement. As league 29 president, David held monthly coaching trainings to foster relationships between club coaches. He provided resources for coaches, including networking, equipment, and support. His leadership role expanded to the position of district president and then region director. As a district president, he was able to continue the monthly coaching trainings, which included a larger soccer community. He helped the district grow by starting a district program that ran alongside the current state program. He also helped the district grow by creating the academy program for the 7-8 year olds, which is still being played today. When district 4 merged into region 2, he stayed as a leader to solidify relationships and promote a spirit of unity in the region. The attributes David has that help him to be a leader and mentor include his patience, diligence, hard work, and fair judgement. His time in the soccer community has helped him grow and he has enjoyed giving back. He is a father of 3, grandfather of 4, and he continues to support the soccer community by supporting his wife, Teri Mills, who works as a referee assigner. He is excited to continue watching his grandkids’ love for soccer develop.
