Third Sunday After Pentecost: Proper 8

June 26, 2022, at Eleven o’clock in the Morning

                          Welcome To Saint Paul’s Church
No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, and no matter where you are on the
journey of life — you are welcome in this church.

We hope you will find Saint Paul’s to be a place of refreshment and renewal, where you experience
the presence of the risen Christ. We have been serving Christ in this location for over two hundred
seventy years. The monuments in our church and the graves in our churchyard reflect the conflicts
and complexities of our nation’s and our city’s history. While our building is old and beautiful, our
mission is contemporary and forward moving. Here you will find a people very much connected with
the questions and struggles of modern life and faith and of following the way of Jesus.
To all our Visitors & Guests
                                           About Worship
If the liturgy (worship) of the Episcopal Church is unfamiliar, then we hope you will find this
information helpful.

You are welcome in the Episcopal Church, and so the first and best resource we offer are your
neighbors in the pews. Just say, "I'm visiting," and they will gladly help.

The worship of the Episcopal Church is rooted in the practices of ancient Christianity. The structure
of our services, the architecture of our building, the music, our physical postures, and participatory
responses ALL hold rich meaning about our beliefs and are intentional expressions of our
relationship with God.

• In this bulletin you will find:
Responses spoken by the people are printed in bold italics.
Directions for the people are printed in italics.
• We encourage families with children to sit at the front of the Nave so that children can easily see
    and hear the liturgy.
• Episcopalians customarily pray either standing or kneeling, so please do what you find most
    comfortable.
• Notify an usher if you require an assisted listening device or any other assistance.
• Restrooms are located in the parish hall. An usher will direct you.

                          About Receiving The Holy Communion
ALL who come in faith are invited to receive Holy Communion at Saint Paul’s.

• During communion, the people form two short lines in the center aisle. After receiving the bread
and wine or a blessing at the altar rail, please exit through the door to the left of the altar and
return to your pew via the side aisles.
• For those who may prefer not to receive communion at the main altar, a communion station is
provided on the main floor to the right of the center aisle. If you are unable to receive at either
station, the clergy will bring the bread and wine to your pew. Please notify an usher before the
    service begins.
• To receive a blessing without receiving Communion, cross both arms over your chest, palms on
    your collar.
• If your children are in the nursery, you are invited to bring them to receive Holy Communion or a
    blessing.

                                          Connect with Us
We invite you to share your contact information on a connect card, located in each pew. Hand it to
one of our clergy, an usher, or place it in the offering plate. Please feel free to fill out as much or as
little information as you’d like so we can connect with you.

The Opening Acclamation

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
The Collect for Purity

Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse
the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and
worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria in excelsis Deo

All Glory to god in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.

  Lord God, heavenly King,
  almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
  Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
		 have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
		 receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,
  you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
		 Jesus Christ,
		 with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus
Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their
teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson 1 Kings 19:15-16,19-21

The Lord said to Elijah, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall
anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall
anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place.”
So he set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was plowing. There were twelve yoke of oxen
ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. He left the
oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” Then Elijah
said to him, “Go back again; for what have I done to you?” He returned from following him, took the yoke
of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to the
people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his servant.

Psalm 16 Read responsively by whole verse

1 Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; *
I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord,
    		 my good above all other.”

2 All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, *
upon those who are noble among the people.

3 But those who run after other gods *
   		 shall have their troubles multiplied.

4 Their libations of blood I will not offer, *
nor take the names of their gods upon my lips.

5 O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; *
it is you who uphold my lot.

6 My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; *
indeed, I have a goodly heritage.

7 I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; *
my heart teaches me, night after night.

8 I have set the Lord always before me; *
because he is at my right hand I shall not fall.

9 My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; *
my body also shall rest in hope.

10 For you will not abandon me to the grave, *
nor let your holy one see the Pit.

11 You will show me the path of life; *
in your presence there is fullness of joy,
and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.
The Second Lesson Galatians 5:1,13-25

For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for
self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single
commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” If, however, you bite and devour one another, take
care that you are not consumed by one another.

Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the
Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you
from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of
the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger,
quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I
warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness,
and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the
flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When the days drew near for Jesus to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers
ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not
receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it, they said,
“Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and
rebuked them. Then they went on to another village.

As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said
to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus said to him,
“Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Another said, “I will
follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a
hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
		 On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

All God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We
have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We
repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive,
restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve
             only your will. Amen.

Make me a channel of your peace: where there is hatred let me bring your love, where there is injury, your
pardon, Lord, and where there’s doubt, true faith in you. O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to
be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved, as to love with all my soul. Make
me a channel of your peace: where there’s despair in life let me bring hope, where there is darkness, only
light, and where there’s sadness, ever joy. Make me a channel of your peace: it is in pardoning that we are
pardoned, in giving of ourselves that we receive, and in dying that we’re born to eternal life. Make me a chan-
nel of your peace: where there is hatred let me bring your love, where there is injury, your pardon, Lord, and
where there’s doubt, true faith in in you.

Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth. … [the Celebrant says a Proper Preface] …. Therefore we praise you,
joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing
this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus and Benedictus qui venit

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
                 Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
                 Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel as you are able.

Celebrant Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into
sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal
Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father
          of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect
              sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when
he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my
Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,
“Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for
the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died.
            Christ is risen.
            Christ will come again.

Celebrant We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving.
Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food
and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sac-
rament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints
into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy
Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven,
                 hallowed be thy Name,
                 thy kingdom come,
                 thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
               And forgive us our trespasses,
                 as we forgive those
                    who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
                 but deliver us from evil.
               For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
                 for ever and ever. Amen.

                                           Parish Announcements

Following today’s service, join us for an informational meeting on a possible summer 2023 mission trip
to Ecuador coordinated through Episcopal missionaries, Cameron and Roberto Vivanco, and the Society of
Anglican Missionaries and Senders. During the meeting you can see photos of past trips and hear about the
type of work that is conducted in-country. All ages are welcome to attend the meeting. Light refreshments
will be served.

Invite someone to join you at Saint Paul’s for our Independence Day Service & BBQ Parish Dinner July 3, at
11:00 am. Our scripture readings, prayers, and music will help us give thanks for the blessings of liberty with
which we have been entrusted.

Following the 11 am service next Sunday, July 3, we will gather in the River Room for a BBQ Parish Dinner.
Bring your favorite BBQ; or for those whose specialty falls outside the smoker or grill, bring your favorite side
dish to share. We’ll make peach cobbler for the parish the morning of the 3rd. As always, we need a team to
help us set up & clean up. Please sign up using our website, so that we can be the best hosts. A direct link is
available in the Weekly Postings.

Independence Day Memorials and Thanksgivings — Included in this year’s Independence Day service will be
patriotic music performed by guest musicians. You are invited to help make this possible by making donations
in memory of a loved one, a veteran, an active duty member of the military, or in thanksgiving for someone
or something about America that you would like to celebrate or recognize. Please contact Keith Shafer in the
Saint Paul’s Music Office, kshafer@saintpauls.org or (706) 724-2485 x 215. The deadline is Tuesday, June 28.

Enjoy a quiet morning or afternoon at the church while helping us welcome visitors to the church Monday-
Friday 9 am-3 pm. Please sign up on our website (a direct link is available in the Weekly Postings).

Sunday Forum, Sundays 9:30 am in the Berlin Room —Join us for our summer formation series on the Apostles
Creed. Each session is independent of the next, so you do not need to have been at the last session to join.

The Oktoberfest Committee is seeking silent auction items and creative ideas, talents, or gifts that can be
auctioned for this Outreach fundraising event such as: vacation getaway locations, tickets to a future game or
event, gift cards, or talents that may be shred with others such as decorating, pet sitting, lessons, or parties.

July 31 is an open Sunday for altar flowers. If you would like to sponsor a Sunday in honor or memory
of someone or “many someones,” please contact the Parish Office at mailbox@saintpauls.org. The normal
charge is a minimum of $100.
The Eucharistic Visitor Ministry exists so that no one must be separated from God’s sacramental gifts and
from participating in the worship of the church. The ministry is offered for all who temporarily or permanently
are homebound. To request a Eucharistic Visit, contact Fr. Biddy (ebiddy@saintpauls.org) or the parish office
(mailbox@saintpauls.org).

The Parish Office is updating our parish directory and has hired Alison Nesbitt to assist us in the collection of
data. During the month of June, you will receive a call from her asking you for any updated contact information
and for your preferences regarding publishing that information to the parish. Should you have any questions,
please contact Elisabeth Price at mailbox@saintpauls.org.

Donate to the Summer Music— The Saint Paul’s Choir began their summer break June 12. On the summer
Sundays when the choirs are on vacation, special music is provided by guest instrumentalists or singers. If
you’d like to donate the music on these Sundays, please email Director of Music Keith Shafer at kshafer@
saintpauls.org or call him (706) 724-2485 ext. 215 for further information and cost.

Name tags allow us to get to know each other and be a welcoming community to all. If you need a name tag
or have just misplaced yours, email the parish office (mailbox@saintpauls.org) or ask an usher for the yellow
form to request a name tag.

Saint Paul’s Church communicates by a weekly E-newsletter. Join our email list on our website or by contacting
the parish administrator, Elisabeth Price, at mailbox@saintpauls.org.
