Great Kills Moravian Church The Herald 2021 Volume 9 October 2021 Brothers and Sisters, I bring you greetings from The Moravian Open Door located at 347 East 18th Street in New York City. Many may know that MOD, as we are often called, is a ministry of the Eastern District of the Moravian Church. MOD provides housing and supportive services for homeless, distressed, and under- served individuals aged fifty years and older. This outreach ministry was established in 1984 as a nonprofit organization. MOD is a transitional housing home that provides private and semi -private rooms for homeless individuals who for one reason or another find themselves without a place to live. MOD is a tem- porary facility, giving the clients time to acquire permanent housing. We are able to assist these clients in navigating their way to gain access to such housing. Our Executive Director Susan Attzs-Mendoza is instrumental in assisting the clients. Client services include obtaining benefits, jobs, training in computer skills and other life skills. We also have a breakfast program which the clients can rely on before they start their day in whatever form it may be. MOD does not receive any government assistance. We therefore rely on patrons for donations along with modest client fees. Even though last year was a difficult year due to the pandemic, we have managed to maintain our regular functioning on a smaller scale and we have endured. We are grateful. We continue to receive and accept donations of food and clothing for the clients. We encourage your continued support in every way possible. We do not know what the future holds, but as jobs continue to be lost, evictions continue to hap- pen and mental health issues continue to rise, our homeless population will likely increase. The services that MOD provides, in part because of the generosity of our friends, will be needed more than ever. Our call from Jesus to care for the sick, the homeless, and the stranger is clearer and bolder than ever before. Your continued care, prayers and financial support are vitally important to sustain our work. Thank you, Blondel Jones Grant President; Board of Directors Autumn Reminds Us That Jesus Will Return Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be pa- tient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. James 5:7-8 NIV

Sister Blondel has held various roles in the Moravian organization and is currently the President of the Board of Di- rectors of MOD in New York City. We will be collecting for MOD until the end of the year. The UBC Central Elders have agreed to match any funds collected by our congregation so the amount will be doubled! Please show your support by sending in a donation today. Make the check payable to Great Kills Mora- vian Church and write MOD in the comments or attach a note.
