The Forerunner.
As we start a new year, the Forerunner editing team would like
to wish you good health and happiness during 2022.

Around the time of publishing we were hearing of the life and
death of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and have included an
article, previously published in 2014, recounting the time when
he visited Kingscote in the 1980s.

All copy for the next edition should be sent to Elin Tattersall

special gift had been given, something
amazing was happening, they had travelled
with expectation to find the child that
would change the world forever. They
brought gifts of Gold, Frankincense and

were not gifts for the moment, but for his
lifetime. They were gifts that affirm the
identity of the one they have found, gold
for a king, incense for Jesus’s holy priestly

offering of love for the world. We too gave
gifts at Christmas, to family, friends or
perhaps charitable gifts to organisations or
other individuals. Charities report that
people go out of their way to help others at
Christmas time, donating to food banks or
treating others with gifts to make life more
bearable; gifts to those who are lonely,
hungry or homeless, changing their lives for
the better.

During the 1980’s Desmond Tutu rose quickly
to be Bishop of Johannesburg and then in
1987 Archbishop of Cape Town. One of his
earliest memories was as a child walking with
his mother when a white priest (Trevor
Huddleston) tipped his hat to her – the first
time he had ever seen a white man pay this
respect to a black woman. It is one of the
treasures of the South African experience that
he came to fill Trevor Huddleston’s role as
Archbishop of Cape Town.

Lady Kathleen Windham had served in the
Women’s Royal Naval Service (the Wrens)
during WW 2 and married in 1946. She was a
charming lady full of grace and warmth, and it
was always a pleasure to meet her as she
walked Angus her little dog around the village.
Her youngest daughter Belinda took part in
the GHCT sponsored cycle event one Saturday
morning, and then went to her wedding in the
afternoon in Kingscote Church. They don’t
make them like that any more. The Forerunner
for July 2000 informed us that Lady Windham
was to leave us to settle on the farm of one of
her sons.
