SYDNEY U3A OVERVIEW
The ethos of Sydney U3A is to promote and foster the melding of lifelong learning, exercise and
community interaction, so that the third age - the time when full time employment has ended
- is truly the age of reinvention, rejuvenation, renewal and redirection.
Sydney University of the Third Age (Sydney U3A) offers hundreds of intellectually stimulating courses, across seven regions of
metropolitan Sydney and across a wide spectrum of topics, including the arts, sciences, history, leisure, language, computing,
discussion groups, literature, travel, philosophy, music, cinema, economics, writing, family history, theatre, and fitness.

This Course Book provides details of the wide variety of courses, presentations, events, and other information, that
is available to all U3A members. Courses are offered in different ways; some are single presentations, others go for
several weeks or through the entire semester.

Events are listed first, followed by all Zoom courses in start date order. Courses provided by each region are next.
Within a region venues are listed in alphabetical order, and courses for each venue are in start date order.
COURSE DELIVERY
The COVID -19 pandemic continues to affect our provision of courses. However, in general most courses are now back
face-to-face with some restrictions on seating etc. Details may change after this course book is printed. Any amendments/
updates are advised on the main web page and in each region’s online section.
BOOKING A COURSE
The starting point to book a course is included in each course listing. It will either be a person to contact, or reference to a
website, where you can book online.
In order to book and attend a course, please note the following:
• Contact the person whose name/email/phone number is given as the booking secretary, OR, go to the website indicated
in the listing
• If there is a problem with this - contact the venue or course coordinator
• Provide your name, membership number (see note below) and phone number, if booking by email or phone
• Use the MyU3A booking facility - where indicated - membership number and password are required
• S
ome courses have a maximum number of attendees, which will be indicated in brackets after the course or event;
e.g. (max 10). If you are unable to attend a course after you have booked, please notify the booking secretary, or cancel
online - as there can be waiting lists
• Wear your membership badge at all times for face to face meetings.
Note:
If you are not a member, you may book a course, and then attend up to two sessions, before you need to become a member.
INSURANCE
Sydney U3A Inc. has public liability insurance to cover against possible damage or injury to persons or property arising from
proven negligence by any member of Sydney U3A or its invitees at the site on which the activity occurs, except in the case
of water or aircraft activity.
Members participating in a course that has a physical component, such as bush walking, table tennis or exercise classes, are
required to sign a form acknowledging that the members understand the insurance cover, before being accepted into one
of these courses.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING PRESIDENT
As you would be aware our President for the past two years, Judy Harris, has stepped down from the
position. During her time as President we were faced with a constantly changing environment, never
knowing whether the decisions we made today would apply next month, or even next week. I have
been a U3A member for fifteen years and have never known a situation anything like the one Judy
had to handle, so on behalf of all our members thank you so much Judy for your hard work and
unbelievable enthusiasm. Until the AGM in March I will be acting in the role of President - some of you
will know me already as the President of the City & Inner West region- and at the AGM I am willing to
nominate for the position of Sydney U3A president.
So if you wish to be further involved in the future direction of U3A please join us at our AGM on Wednesday, 30 March
2022 where you can meet Ita Buttrose (our guest speaker) as well as your many friends.
On behalf of the entire Board of Management and all those diligent volunteers whose goal is to make U3A prosper and
flourish, I hope 2022 allows all U3A members to enjoy the benefits this wonderful association offers.

A MESSAGE FROM THE VP EDUCATION
After two amazing years in the role of VP Education, I am delighted to report that U3A is alive and
well thanks to the enormous effort of all the volunteers with whom I have had the honour and pleasure
of working during that time. With the tireless efforts of every volunteer, U3A was able to sustain its
vision of providing life-long learning and social activities for everyone.
Despite unprecedented challenges, the unseen components of the engine which operates U3A, have
aspired to maintain the best service for all U3A members.
Under the leadership of the Board of Management, supported by each of the teams who are guided
by strong, focused and dedicated leaders: the IT team, the regional web editors, the regional course coordinators, the
office staff, the course book creators and all the presenters, booking secretaries, venue coordinators, Zoom licence
managers and many more too numerous to mention - U3A has continued to thrive.
In our efforts to make U3A the best it can be, a strategy planning meeting was held. At this meeting it was decided that
we should canvass our members by giving them an opportunity to respond to a survey. The results of the survey, which
so many members took the time to complete, is providing a foundation for the future planning of U3A. As a result, a
promotion team is now in place. Their mission is to retain and recruit members.
Concurrently, another team is investigating ways to improve our online booking system. In response to member requests,
Zoom courses will continue and be advertised in the front pages of the Course Book - as will events. Face to face sessions
will continue to offer the opportunities of extended learning as well as socialisation.

TOUR OF ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL (max 20)

St Marys Rd Sydney
St Mary’s Cathedral was designed by architect William Wardell after the first cathedral burnt down in 1865. It was substantially
completed by 1928, although the spires were not added until 2000. It is built in the Victorian Gothic style, has beautiful
stained glass windows and tells the story of the foundation and development of the Roman Catholic faith in Australia.
Arrive 15 minutes early. The meeting point is inside the Cathedral by the bookshop. A charge of $5 per person, which
contributes to the upkeep of the Cathedral, will be collected on the day.

GUIDED TOUR OF SYDNEY TRADES HALL (max 15)

Designed in the Victorian Commercial Italianate style, the Trades Hall was built as a meeting place for Australia’s trade
union movement. This tour will explore its heritage architecture, the history of progressive movements hosted there and
its role in broadcasting and literacy services.

Opened in 1845, Sydney’s Government House is the vice-regal residence of the Governor of NSW and one of the finest
examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Sydney. View the restored grand historic interiors, including the exquisite hand-
painted stencil ceilings, and a significant collection of portraits, furniture, decorative arts and gubernatorial memorabilia,
many of them produced in NSW and of heritage significance.

A PICNIC ON THE HAWKESBURY (max 10)

This waterside walk is the ideal setting for appreciating the bush environment and having a look at the trees, shrubs and
flowers that create this magical setting right on Sydney’s doorstep. Along the way we’ll discover the beauty of the banks,
beaches and sandstone landforms, plus the spot where Australia’s Constitution was drafted. BYO picnic lunch to enjoy in
one of the prettiest settings in NSW. This is a leisurely outing, dictated by the eccentric public transport timetables.
Total distance: 6km.
Requirements: sturdy walking shoes, sun and rain protection, water, reasonable level of fitness. Cameras recommended.
Swim at own risk. Train 8.48 from Central, CCN Line. Arrive Hawkesbury River 9.49, then ferry to Little Wobby. Return by
train 3.02, arriving Sydney 4.10.

HISTORY WALK ALONG HAWTHORNE CANAL (max 10)

Leichhardt North Light Rail Stop
Long Cove Creek, nowadays known as the Hawthorne Canal, has a rich and varied history. It is thought that the Creek,
during pre-colonial times, formed the natural boundary between the Gadigal and Wangal people. These days it separates
Leichhardt from Haberfield. Come for a walk along its banks and discover the creative arts hubs, the heritage infrastructure,
the engineering marvels, and the stories of rebellion. Total distance 4km, mostly flat.
Requirements: reasonable fitness, comfortable shoes, sun/rain protection, and water. Optional coffee/lunch afterwards at
local café. Walk finishes at Lewisham West Light Rail stop.
