From the President

                                                  The 2019-20 academic year is a momentous
                                                  occasion for the Fitchburg State commu-
                                                  nity. We are celebrating our 125th anni-
                                                  versary with a year’s worth of programs,
                                                  exhibits and events that recall our history
                                                  and look to our continued evolution.
                                  That history includes 15 years of Adult Learning in the
                             Fitchburg Area. ALFA has helped thousands of students expe-
                             rience the joys and enrichment of lifelong learning. With
                             course offerings that span local and global history to using the
                             latest technology and personal fitness classes, ALFA reminds
                             us that curiosity is a trait we all should nurture.
                                  I hope you will indulge that curiosity through the univer-
                             sity’s 125th anniversary year by being part of our celebration.
                             This milestone belongs to all members of our community.

                                                         ALFA (Adult Learning in the Fitchburg Area) is a lifelong learning institute that
                                                         serves adult learners in Fitchburg and the surrounding communities.
                                                         ALFA is sponsored by Graduate and Continuing Education at Fitchburg State
                                                         University in collaboration with volunteer members of the community.
                                                         We offer non-credit daytime classes, trips, special events, and a free speaker
                                                         series. ALFA students are encouraged to volunteer and participate in program
                                                         leadership and development, as well as social and recreational activities.
                                                         A limited number of scholarships are available.

                                                         ALFA provides an opportunity for lifelong learners to meet and share interests
                                                         in an informal setting and pursue learning for enrichment and personal growth.

                                                                       Come participate in Fitchburg State University’s annual Community
                                                                       Read event. This year’s book is Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus by Art
                                                                       Spiegelman. This book recounts one man’s Holocaust experience
                                                                       and the impact it had, not only on him, but on his son as well. Told
                                                                       in the form of a graphic novel, Spiegelman’s work is both beautiful
                                                                       and harrowing. The main character is a simple mouse, named
                                                                       Vladek Spiegelman, who retells his Holocaust story to his son, Art.
                                                                       In the retelling, we are witness to the cruelty of genocide, the guilt
                                                                       of a survivor, and the complex relationship of a father and son.

Neville Frankel, will provide an in-depth view of the historical and
political events leading to apartheid in South Africa; what it was
like for black and white South Africans to live under the regime;
and the events leading to the election of Nelson Mandela as
President of South Africa. The second segment of this lecture
series will focus on the post-Mandela era and the legacy of the anti-
apartheid movement. The speaker will provide an understanding
of current South African politics, including a discussion of what
the future holds for the country and the difficult issues faced by
