Knowing Jesus more Closely (III)
(The Spirituality of love and Praxis)
Exploring the Sermon on the Mount
Dear Friends as we continue our journey with Jesus in knowing him more closely,
it is important to explore the spiritual ingredients contained in the Sermon on the
Mount (Matthew’s Gospel, 5-7), our first port of call is to unveil the interior life of
Christ. All that the beloved Saviour instructed us to do or the life he invited us to
live in the above underlined chapters of Matthew’s Gospel are already made manifest and visible in the life
and mission of Jesus since no one can offer what he/she does not possess (Nemo dat quod non habet).
At the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount (Mathew 5:1), the Scripture indicated that Jesus went up
to the Mountain. Going up to the Mountain in the biblical worldview is to go to meet God: to pray, to
experience the divinity of God, and to receive pertinent instructions/mission. We remember that Moses went
up to the mountain in Exodus 19: 3 (Mount Sinai), Elijah went up to the mountain in 1 Kings 19: 11 (Mount
Horeb), so Jesus like the New Moses (Deuteronomy 18: 15), went up to the mountain to communicate a
message; a new way of looking at the Decalogue. He, as God; the Lord of the universe sat down, a sign of
authority to outline a new way of life.
Spiritual life begins with an attitude of looking beyond oneself to seek a strength that comes from God.
Prayer, which is a spiritual exercise, remains an occasion for us to lift up our hearts. It is a surge of the heart: it
is a simple look turned towards heaven; it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy (St.
Therese of Lisieux, Manuscrits autobiographiques, C 25).
Jesus began to teach by enumerating the Eight Beatitudes, “Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is
the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for
they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be
satisfied.” etc (Matthew 5: 3-12). The Spirituality of Jesus is the spirituality of blessings and joys. He did not
advocate for a sad spirituality where others feel intimidated and condemned by the attitude of the one who
claims to be holy. The Pharisees scored high marks in this by making the spiritual life a space for exclusion.
On this note, Jesus admonished His follows to go beyond the modus viviendi (way of life) of the Pharisees
“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the
kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5: 20).
Jesus did not promote a fuga mundi (flight from the world) spiritual life. He wants us to be members of
the earthly city by being “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world” (Matthew 5: 13-14). The
spirituality of Jesus is that of practice and not doctrine. It is a spirituality that encourages contemplation in
action as promoted by St. Ignatius of Loyola. In Matthew 5: 19, the Blessed Lord admonishes us not only to
keep the commandments but to teach others to observe the commandments; to help others in their spiritual life,
“Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be
called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great
in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5: 19).
The Spirituality of Jesus is the spirituality of being our brothers’ keeper; to help others in their life
struggles, to welcome others irrespective of what their situation may be. Not to judge but to forgive; not to
hate but to reconcile with one another (Matthew 5: 23-26). It is an interior life centered on the good of the
other and not merely on the exigencies of the law since Jesus came to give us life in its fullness (John 10:10).
Have Graceful Week!!!

a recibir instrucciones/misión pertinentes.
No juzgar sino perdonar; no odiar
(Juan 10: 10).
¡¡¡Que tengan una Semana llena de Gracia!!!
