Message from our Head of School
I spy with my little eye… some blossoms. Lovely. Spring is on its way…
Another brilliant week at Grinling Gibbons. We started on Monday with our usual assembly, which
included looking at and discussing the situation in Ukraine. A member of staff has started an appeal to
support the Ukrainian refugees. If parents would like to donate any good quality clothes, dried or
tinned food, toothpaste, baby items and any medical items, could these items kindly be brought in and
given to the school office, and they will be taken to the donation centre.
On Tuesday, Mr Kelly made some pancakes and I showed off my ‘flipping skills’ in front of the children.
Yes, I dropped one! We didn’t have a frying pan, so I ran over to our lovely neighbour
Mandy who was so nice and lent us 2 pans to use. Without her, there would have been
no pancakes at Grinling Gibbons! The children thoroughly enjoyed watching Mr Kelly
making them and loved eating them just as much! We also spoke about the significance
of Lent and the part it plays in the Christian calendar.
We have been ringing the bell this week and the children have been excellent in Stop, Drop and
Read! This has given all the staff and children a chance to stop what they are doing and read a book for
a few minutes to mark the start of book week. All the children look fantastic today dressed in their
world book day costumes. I would like to say how extremely proud I am of all the hard work the
children put in this week decorating their potatoes. I have seen some amazing art skills and I have no
doubt that it is going to be extremely hard to pick a winner!
The year 6 children have all been given their choice of secondary schools this week and all are happy
with the choice they have been given.
Nerys Pearce, the Paralympian came to school yesterday from Sports for Schools and
worked with all the children doing circuits in the hall. The children had an amazing time,
Nerys was really impressed with the children’s enthusiasm and eloquence when they
asked questions. There is still time to bring your sponsorship money in and prizes are
based on the amount of money you raise. The last day for you to bring in sponsorship
money is Thursday 10th March.
The official start date for the Schools Street Programme is Monday 7th March. To avoid getting a ticket
you can drop your child to breakfast club which starts at 7:30am. When collecting your child either walk
or park on Edward Street. Please remember the restrictions are in place from 8:00am to 9:00am and
from 2:15pm to 3:15pm.
As always, please remember, your children are our priority. Let us know when things are not going the
way they should.

                                    Mr. Dean Gordon NPQH

                        Message from our Executive Head
                                                    Temptation
Miss Lochernn never hit us - not even a slap with a ruler- and a ruler didn’t really count- not like getting hit with
a belt or a cane. For all the chastisement I received in my dappled education, I was never so remorseful as the
day I disappointed Miss Lochernn. That broke my heart. She was my first teacher. I loved her. I was planning to
marry her ever since Mummy told me she couldn’t marry me. Apparently, being married to Daddy ruled that out.
I hadn’t got around to asking Miss Lochernn or anything, but she was clearly head and shoulders above any other
candidate and she told me I was her best boy. The deal was as good as done.

I first started primary school in a lovely wee school in Belfast in the early 1960s - this was a progressive, bright,
city school with boys and girls educated together. This was a blessing to me as it meant that I had the overwatch
of three of my elder sisters in the playground which, on occasion I needed. But ah - Miss Lochernn, - they say
that true love never runs smooth. If it was the first time my own foolishness tripped me up in love then, sorry to
say, it was not the last.

I blame Michael Ross. Why is there always a Michael Ross in the world to lead us astray? If it were not for him-
well, who knows where I would be now? It was doubly poignant that my career in fine art was fractured at the
same time as my heart. Romanticism took a right beating that day. For it was on that day I painted my last house.
I had mastered painting a wee house with four windows and a path. Easy job. It was the smoke that caused the
trouble - and the smoke that broke my marriage plans.

I was painting at my easel, putting my house in order, and opposite me, at the same easel was Michael Ross-
painting a remarkably similar house. Miss Lochernn was called out of class for a few moments by the head
teacher. Well, I was finishing off the smoke with a flourish when - blow me - didn’t a splash fall on Michael Ross’s
face. He didn’t seem to mind too much - but a little flick of paint came back my way. I reciprocated with a slightly
bigger splash of paint. I will tell you no lie – it wasn’t long before the houses were abandoned and we were
painting one another in Jackson Pollock style. And yes, it was more fun than painting houses.

Oh, the intoxication of evil! We were giggling fit to burst between salvoes of paint. “MICHAEL KELLY!” a stern but
familiar voice—It was Miss Lochernn! I looked at Michael Ross and the scales fell from my eyes. He was covered
in paint, so was I, the floor and the easels. Instantly, I coloured a deep red for shame - albeit flecked with other
colours.
“MICHAEL KELLY! I AM SO DISAPPOINTED IN YOU! AND I THOUGHT YOU WERE SUCH A GOOD BOY!” What had I
done? I had destroyed something sacred for a few moments of shallow pleasure. I could feel hot tears pricking
my eyes. I had let Miss Lochernn down! What a foolish, foolish child I was. Truly, the devil was in me.
Looking back, I would have to thank Miss Lochernn, if she is alive, for she taught me a great lesson. I have always
remembered her and striven to do the right thing since that day. Alas, the world is full of ejits like Michael Ross. I
must confess that, many a time, I have set out on the straight path only to find my feet on another road. On
balance, I suppose I should thank Michael Ross too, and everyone like him. For, all in all, I have had some great
fun and laughter in my life, and sure - they didn’t always catch us.

We would like to remind all parents and carers that
it is important that all children come to school every
day and on time. As a school, we take attendance
very seriously, and regularly monitor this.
If your child’s attendance drops below 90%, your
child will be a persistent absentee. You will then
be referred to the Lewisham Council Attendance
and Welfare Officer, who will contact you.

Happy World Book Day!

                                      Happy World Book Day!

Wow! What a fantastic World Book Day we have had! The children looked amazing in their costumes,
and we all enjoyed celebrating reading for pleasure! We can't wait for next year.

We have been taken over by potatoes! Thank you to all the children and parents for putting such effort
into the home project. The creative thought and results were mind-blowing! They are compostable too,
once the non-recyclables have been removed.
