Meg and Joe triumph at British Field Championships
Yorkshire archers put in outstanding performances at the British Field Championships, which
took place at Overton Archers' ground on the last weekend in May.
Megan Ashleigh Tinker of Dearne Valley AC is now senior lady British Field Champion and
Open Champion.
Joe Fairburn is now the Under 18 Recurve British Field Champion and part of the winning
England team in the Home Nations competition.
This follows on from excellent performances at the English Field Archery Championships the
previous week, where Luke Stocks became the Under 18 Compound champion, Joe became
the Under 18 Recurve champion and Megan became the Lady Recurve champion.
Congratulations to them on these great achievements.

Committee changes
The YAA committee has changed:
➢ Gwen Smith is now the Treasurer
➢ Karen Hunt is now the Judges Liaison Officer:
Details of the full committee can be found on the YAA website.
Danny Cameron, new RCO
Danny Cameron from Thirsk Bowmen was elected as the new Regional Coaching Organiser
at the NCAS AGM 2018.
The last four RCOs have all been from the YAA. Norman Foster succeeded Bob Parkinson.
Kath Fitzpatrick took over from Norman and stayed in post for 12 years, succeeded briefly by
Carol Byde who resigned mid term with Kath standing in again.
Danny is a County Coach and the first RCO for many years who has not been a Senior coach.
As retiring RCO (again!) I wish him lots of luck in the role which I am sure he will make his
own and carry out very well

YAA Newsletter Summer 2018 Page 2Adam breaks national record
Adam Carpenter of Barnsley Archery Club has set a new UK Junior record for a 720 50M
compound round, shooting 698 (345/353) at the Bowmen of Glen on Saturday the 12th of
May.
This is an amazing achievement, especially since it's so early in the season.
Izzy brings back gold
Izzy Carpenter won the Gold medal as part of the GB Compound Junior Women team at the
1st Leg of the European Youth Cup, held in Roverto, Italy, from the 15th to 19th of May. They
beat host nation Italy in the final by four points.
A really outstanding achievement by Izzy and her team mates Sarah Moon and Ella Gibson.
Success for Joe at National Tour 1st leg
Joe Fairburn of Wharfe Valley Archers secured 4th place in the first leg of the National Tour at
a sun drenched Lilleshall.
Shooting 70m as a senior gent (rather than cadet) Joe ranked 6th on day 1 with 631. Joe made
steady progress through the elimination rounds beating, amongst others GB archer Alex Wise
in the quarter final in a one arrow shoot off, and eventually losing out to GB archer Tom Hall
in the semi final.
Joe's Bronze medal match opponent was Olympian Patrick Huston who had lost to eventual
winner Conor Hall. Joe took an early 4-0 lead, but Patrick pulled back to 4-4. Agonisingly,
less than a millimetre denied Joe a 6-4 win as his arrow was called out of the 10 ring. This
made the score 5-5, which led to a one-arrow shoot-off. Both shot 9s, but Patrick's was closer
to the centre giving him the podium spot.
It was an excellent weekend all round for Joe as he followed it up on the Sunday with a 641
and 633 at 70m in the Staffordshire Bucks or Bounty. Not only did this give him two personal
best scores (single and double 70m 720), but also 2 new county records, 2 new Northern
Counties records and the win in the senior 'Bounty' section of the competition.
Martin wins the Scorton Arrow
Congratulations to Martin Middleton of Aardwolf Archers, who became captain of the Scorton
Arrow at the 310th Recorded Meeting in the 346th year of The Society of Archers' Antient
Silver Arrow Tournament.

YAA Newsletter Summer 2018 Page 5Yorkshire Clout weekend 2018
The second Yorkshire clout weekend took place over the 14th and 15th of April and was
hosted at Hutton Cranswick by Archers of East Riding who, as always, proved to be excellent
hosts.
Saturday 14th was the WA and Metric clout day and the open shoot saw 84 entries across all
disciplines. We were lucky to have a mostly sunny day with light winds which was
appreciated by all after the recent cold and snow and rainy weather. Shooting finished at 3:30
PM and 6 tassels were claimed, with Danny Walsh of Adwalton Moor claiming a gold.
Sunday 15th incorporated the YAA Clout Champs. Following a short period of reflection for
Pam Snow a slightly larger entry of 87 archers commenced shooting AGB clout rounds. Again
the weather was OK although a strengthening breeze made the shooting more challenging as
the day progressed. The shooting concluded at 3:15 PM and shortly after the awards were
made by our Lady Paramount for the weekend, Karen Winsett.
I would like to thank Karen for acting as Lady P and Martin Middleton, Allan Shuker, Sarah
Dickinson and John Fell for judging over the weekend. Thanks must also go to Archers of
East Riding for the use of the venue as well as having hot food and drinks available all
weekend.
Lastly, the 2019 YAA clout weekend will take place on the 20th and 21st April 2019 at the
same venue.

YAA Newsletter Summer 2018 Page 8Pam Snow
We would like to let YAA members know of the death of Pam Snow, widow of Stan who left
us in 2013.
Pam died peacefully and with dignity in her nursing home on 9th March at the grand age of 92
years. She was well up until last year when she had a mastectomy following breast cancer.
Although she recovered from her operation, she succumbed to her frailty following a brave
battle. She was independent, determined and chirpy until Christmas when she finally moved
into a nursing home.
Pam and Stan were heavily involved with Harvester Archers, Doncaster and the YAA and, in
her younger years, Pam was a successful archer herself. Later she shot socially with the
Ascham Society, was Lady Paramount at countless tournaments and was always at Stan's side,
managing and administering events and competitions. A particular family favourite was the
"Chicken and Dinner Wine Supper" when our house smelled delicious!
Pam was awarded the Yorkshire Sword in 1985 and the YAA Award of Merit in 2001.
If anyone would like to join us to celebrate Pam's life and say goodbye, her service is at Rose
Hill Crematorium, Doncaster on Monday 9th April at 2:20 PM and afterwards at Doncaster
Deaf Trust on Leger Way.

YAA Newsletter Summer 2018 Page 9Yorkshire Awards
Three more people have received the Yorkshire Award in recognition of the great work they've
done for their clubs.
Mary and Brian Hannan each received the Yorkshire Award from YAA President Andrew
Neal. Mary and Brian have worked tirelessly for their club, Cobra Archers of Goole, and have
contributed greatly to the county and region for many years.
We are sure the Yorkshire committee will need no introduction to Mary, a long standing
archer, coach, County coach, coach trainer, club founder and tireless promoter of
archery in the county and beyond. As a club founder, she brought archery to Goole and
surrounding towns and villages and has taught and inspired several generations of
archers. She introduced Arrows to local schools, takes archery out to fetes, schools and
care homes. She includes all ages and abilities in "have a goes" and is a regular visitor
to homes for people with both physical and mental challenges. She has manufactured
her own aids for archers with physical challenges, including poor sight and severely
diminished mental and physical abilities. She has inspired several generations of new
archers and encouraged and supported those who were unconvinced of their potential
abilities. She fundraises for the
club and has been instrumental
in securing venues for it to meet
at. She has encouraged and
supported members to try
different disciplines within
archery, even securing shooting
areas to promote different forms
of the sport when necessary. She
has provided the club with
certainty, encouragement,
support, funds, skills, coaching
and inspiration.
Brian too needs no introduction in the County. A tireless supporter of both the club and
Mary. A longbowman with an unusual but effective style of shooting. A master maker of
"things" that all clubs need to run efficiently and cheaply. Always at Mary's side. An
inspiration to all. A quiet guide, possessing a knowledge of the art of archery surpassed
only by his quiet and calm ability to guide and encourage even the most timid beginner
to competition winning potential. A quiet and calming voice in the midst of panic and
low self belief. There is no greater pleasure in life than to have spent an afternoon
shooting with him.
Their continuing contribution to archery in Yorkshire and beyond can only be a good
thing for the area and the County and recognition for this is well over due. We urge you
to approve their nomination.
John Hall, Rachel Kenny
YAA Newsletter Summer 2018 Page 10Jane Jones of Wyke Archers was presented with the Yorkshire Award on the 4th of March
2018 by Andrew Neal. This is a fitting farewell present to Jane, who is moving down south.
She and her family will be missed by all at Wyke.
Jane contacted our club in July 2014 asking if her daughter would be able to attend a
beginner's course with us, then shortly after her husband did the same. Both became
club members by the end of the year, and Jane naturally joined Wyke Archers in April
2015. Since joining Jane has fully embedded herself as a key member of our club and
although she has not actively engaged in the archery itself very much despite being a
fully paid up member she did
however show interest in
helping out over the sessions.
Very quickly I realised that I
had a true friend and assistant
to help with the day to day
running of the club. At that
time I was shouldering much
of the responsibilities myself
and needed others to join me
on the club committee to take
the club forward over the next
few years. Jane took on the
role of club Records Officer,
and worked very hard to engage our members in competing for badges and our trophies.
Following the departure of our Treasurer, Jane trained up a new records officer and took
over the treasurer role herself. Since then she has rarely missed a session and worked
very, very hard with myself to get the club to where it is now. In this time we have taken
the club from a handful of archers (approx. 6) to a fully fledged, community active, pro
family club with over 80 members including a very healthy junior section. Her husband
is now one of our equipment officers, and her daughter is one of our junior
representatives.
Unfortunately Jane and her whole family are leaving Yorkshire and moving to a new
home in Hampshire in the New Year, and I would like to recognize her unerring
commitment to our club and the promotion of archery in our area. She, and her family,
will be much missed and I feel she will leave a large hole in our club which will be hard
to fill no matter how much further the club grows. Jane has helped me set Wyke Archers
on a path for the future which is full of promise, and my thanks for her efforts both for
me personally and the club in general is such that written text cannot fully portray. I
have full confidence that awarding Jane with the Yorkshire Award will go a little way to
expressing how much I, the club committee and Wyke Archers appreciate what she has
done for archery in Yorkshire.

YAA Newsletter Summer 2018 Page 11County Coach Course 2018-2019
The YAA is registering to run a County Coach course for coaches at level 2 who wish to
progress to the next level. The County Coaching course is for coaches currently working with,
or aspiring to work with, talented archers in a performance environment.
We are looking for coaches who:
➢ Want to further their own learning and development;
➢ Have 2 years+ at Level 2;
➢ Coach groups and individuals at their own and/or other clubs from novice to advanced
levels;
➢ Have a desire to coach individuals to higher levels of performance in a
talent/performance context.
County Coach is the L3 equivalent grade that moves from club-based coaching to
performance-based coaching and applicants will be interviewed to ensure they have sufficient
background in the sport to enable them to make this move.
For full details of the proposed course, please see the document on the YAA and YAA
Coaching websites.

New YAA timing system available to clubs
A reminder that the YAA’s new Danage timing system is available to YAA clubs for use at
their own FITA shoots.
The system combines timer, lights, sound, scoreboard, archer rotation indicators and control
panels. It’s so energy efficient that the whole system can run for a two-day shoot using two car
batteries.
Instructions for the use of the system are available from the Judging page of the YAA website.
Please contact Karen Hunt if you are interested in using this system at your club’s open shoot.

The Yorkshire Award
THE YORKSHIRE AWARD is a prestigious award where clubs can
nominate individuals or couples who, in the eyes of their club,
deserve recognition for services to that particular club.
There is no set deadline for submission of nominations.
If you think someone in your club deserves such recognition, please
download the nomination form from the website, complete it, and
send it to the county secretary.
Judges expenses form
The Judges Confirmation and Expense Form was designed following comments made by a
number of judges. The tournament organiser or club secretary should send the form to the
judge well in advance of the event. The judge should return the confirmation of attendance
and expected expenses, so matters can be settled in advance of the event.
To prevent double booking of Judges, the Judges Confirmation and Expense Form includes a
tear off slip to send to Karen Hunt, the Judges Liaison Officer, when the booking has been
confirmed. The form can be downloaded as a Word document from the YAA website:
www.yorkshirearchery.co.uk/Documents/JudgeConfExp.doc
Alternatively, write to the county secretary or phone him for a copy.
If you want particular judges, please write their names on the slip that is to be sent to Karen.
Many thanks for your anticipated support.
