OF THE EARTH
An eccentric professor, a faithful nephew and their
fearless guide embark upon a fantastic journey of peril
and wonder, through the mouth of an Icelandic volcano
and down into the unexplored regions deep below our
feet... encountering mysteries, monsters and even
giant mushrooms along the way. It will take all these
explorers’ strength and ingenuity to find their way home
again and into the history books!

Based on the novel by Jules Verne, Journey to the
Centre of the Earth is a fantastical adventure story that
teaches us to never lose sight of our child-like curiosity,
to always look to the future and that at the end of the
day, we are all who we are because of the journeys we
have undertaken.

In Search of the Inner Churchill
Historian David Lough is an expert on Winston
Churchill. His book No More Champagne –
Churchill and his Money pieces together the
largely unknown story of Churchill’s chaotic
personal finances. The Times, Wall Street
Journal, Daily Mail and Guardian listed it among
their Books of the Year in 2015. He followed this
in 2018 with another book that received critical
acclaim: Darling Winston – Forty years of letters
between Winston Churchill and his Mother. In
this evening’s talk David sheds new light on
Churchill’s curious emotional, intellectual and
personal world - and how it affected his public
life.

Modern Life
                          is Rubbish
Bloody hell, life is difficult sometimes. There are so many things to get stressed about -
anxiety is through the roof and everyone is getting more and more frustrated and grumpy!

Modern Life is Rubbish is The Spring’s attempt to recognise the stresses and strains of
modern life through theatre, an outdoor spectacular and comedy. You could stay at
home and bang your head against the wall or you could get out to think about and
hopefully laugh at the ridiculousness of it all!

This evening’s event includes three performances.

                                                   TENSILE STRENGTH
                                                   (OR HOW TO SURVIVE
                                                   AT YOUR WIT’S END)
                                                   7pm – 8pm in the theatre
We’ve all been there: struggling with work,
with relationships, feeling like things are
all A Bit Too Much…and then the cat goes
                                                   missing.

Tensile Strength is a theatre performance
about the society in which we live. It
questions the causes of stress and how
we as individuals can deal with it before
it turns into something more sinister.

Begin your evening with theatre maker
Holly Gallagher who has some urgent
questions for a society which just can’t
                                                    seem to relax.

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes and
people getting angry about parking spaces. But what
                                                       really fuels the road rage?

Come and witness a hilarious, acrobatic show in our
car park where a parking row escalates to full-blown
war as two cars vie for one parking spot. As the cars
collide so do the occupants, their musical choices
and the contents of the boot. Bonnets pop, roofs
peel open and everything (and everyone!) starts to
unhinge. Expect a host of surprises as the cars and
their drivers start to unleash some anger!

At a time when divisions in society cleave us apart,
this outdoor performance will bring people together
to laugh at ourselves, to explore the ways that
conflicts escalate disproportionately and to reflect
on how we let fury over small things blind us to
                                                          larger realities.

SOUNDS OF SIMON
Sounds of Simon is a tribute to the wonderful music of Paul Simon, from the years as one half of Simon and
Garfunkel to the enduring success of his solo career.
Come on a journey as they take you through the early Simon and Garfunkel albums, through the massive success
of Bridge Over Troubled Water and on to the Grammy award-winning Still Crazy After All These Years and
Graceland.
Lose yourself to nostalgia as the full band play such classics as Mrs Robinson, The Boxer, The Sound of Silence,
You Can Call Me Al and The Obvious Child, as well as others that have established Paul Simon as one of the most
successful songwriters of all time.

The Noisy Animals are looking forward to their dream
holiday and have some brilliant ideas about where in the
world they want to go. Kid Carpet just wants them all to be
together but will he be able to keep everyone happy when
he can’t even get them in the car?
This lively show contains a mix of live music, theatre,
comedy, puppetry and animation.
A ridiculous and funny story of going on your holidays, with
silliness and mischief for the whole family. Expect flying
tents, diving bears, massive carrots and Ibiza anthems.
Ed Patrick (aka Kid Carpet), is a Bristol-based maker of
nonsense music and rock’n’roll theatre shows.

DO YOU THINK THAT’S WISE?
The Life and Times of John Le Mesurier
Dad’s Army turned actor John Le Mesurier into a household
name as the quintessentially English Sergeant Wilson. As with
many comedy stars, Le Mesurier’s life was not without tragedy.
His broken marriage to Hattie Jacques and the betrayal by best
friend Tony Hancock were setbacks that shook him, but his
reputation never wavered.
Leading impressionist Julian Dutton presents this show that is
packed with glorious reminiscences and stories from the golden
age of British comedy.
75 years after the D-Day tanks rolled down Havant streets on the
way to France we take time to celebrate the very best of English
comedy and to appreciate the freedom given to us by those who
lost their lives and made sacrifices during World War Two.

Mass Epidemic Hysteria: - 1. Spontaneous, en-masse
development of physical and/or emotional symptoms among a group of people; 2. A socially contagious frenzy of
behaviour in a group as a reaction to an event.
1518, France
A woman walks into the street and starts to dance. She is joined by over 200 people all unable to stop, in what
has become known as the Dancing Plague. Lasting for over a month, many of these people dance themselves to
death. The exact cause is still unknown.

Megson, aka Stu & Debbie Hanna, draw heavily on
their Teesside heritage to create a truly unique brand
of folk music.
The husband and wife duo have gained fame on
the British folk scene not only for their arresting
and intelligent songwriting but for their exquisite
musicianship and northern humour. As fRoots
Magazine puts it “if you don’t like the music here then
you have a problem.”

Last here in 2015, we’re delighted to welcome Megson
back to The Spring with a tour to accompany their new
album CONTRADICSHUN.

HumDrum are back at The Spring this summer with P G
Wodehouse’s most famous creations, Jeeves and Wooster,
in David and Robert Goodale’s 2013 pastiche.
Determined to recount his recent adventures in the form
of a one-man show, Bertie Wooster enlists both his faithful
butler, Jeeves and his valet, Seppings to help with… well,
everything, really. Bertie being Bertie, however, nothing is
going to go to plan…
Following their successful The Complete Works of William
Shakespeare (Abridged), The Bible: The Complete Word
of God (Abridged), The Hound of the Baskervilles and The
39 Steps, HumDrum return to small-scale mayhem and
promise an evening of laughter with this Olivier Award-
