DANII FOUNDATION UPDATE #NOMOREFEAR 2021 AND BEYOND: SUPPORT FOR EVERY AUSTRALIAN LIVING WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES These last 18-months have certainly been a challenge for many including our DANII Foundation. Covid presented many hurdles in this social-distancing world that has fast become our reality of what seems to most of us today as our NEW Normal! That said, we are pleased to share that our DANII Team and Volunteers have forged ahead and continued to creatively advocate for a Type 1 Diabetes Voice as well as adapted to further education via social channels on what Type ONE diabetes is like to live with and how Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and new diabetes technologies both saves and changes lives. Type 1 diabetes is not a disease that happens due to poor diet, it is an auto-immune disease for which the cause is still very much un-known. Without a cause, there is still no cure. Evolving management technology is the closest we can dream for. Our social media pages have been overwhelmed with personal accounts of how CGM technology has changed the lives of T1D’s and their families. Parents have experienced sleep, and T1D’s tell us great stories of regained confidence and renewed positivity for life. Many report very real improvements in their HBA1C ~ which is a glycated haemoglobin measurement that enables clinicians to get an overall picture of what average blood sugar levels have been over a period of weeks/months. In some cases there have been massive improvements and stability unknown to the individual in the past and “time in range” has become a new level of diabetes management. The documented health benefits of well controlled diabetes cannot be underestimated. When we see the serious morbidity of poorly controlled diabetes, including the high health costs of complications, it is easy to understand the very real cost saving of CGM and evolving diabetes technologies over the medium to long term. When our Government rolled out Stage 1 of CGM funding, Teens’ who were age 17 in 2017 are now in 21 in 2021. At age 21, our government no longer provides funding for these young people who are at the beginning of their adult lives. Many at university, funding car and private health payments, just moved out of home and embarking on their new careers. Sadly at around $5000 a year, the cost of CGM is way out of the range of these young adults and so they now find themselves unable to continue to self-fund this technology that has transformed their life and given them a new sense of safety and hope. 2019 brought Stage 2 CGM funding gifting Australian women pregnant and planning free access to glucose monitoring devices as well as a hand-full of health-card holders. Yet again when baby is born, these new mothers tell us they cannot afford to continue the cost of CGM and so like those turning 21, they reach out to DANII requesting financial support. Following Stage 2 funding, the DANII Foundation did not wait long to start the campaign for those over the golden age of 21. 2020 and this year to date has been somewhat quieter on the government relations front, primarily a direct result of governments focus on Covid safety of our overall Australian population. Whilst DANII played a leading role in securing and implementing Stage 1 and Stage 2 CGM government funding packages, we continue to keep communication lines open with government and health officials. DANII continues to drive our #NoMoreFear campaign, targeting Federal politicians to support an extension of CGM funding for ALL. With an election looming we are hopeful to again see a bi-partisan election commitment for Stage 3 funding. DANII friends are collectively focused on presenting Government with the financial savings that CGM will ultimately provide. Real saving on the public purse by avoiding costly health complications including but not limited to mental health, limb amputations, organ failure, and eye disease. Whilst CGM funding to date has been a gift to around 43,000 type 1 Australian’s, sadly for many CGM funding was a gift of life and safety that has since been revoked due to age or maternal circumstance. DANII foundation continues our work with the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) in their 2021 review of CGM products available on the NDSS. Our message and advice remains clear that CGM is both a clinical and cost effective device that should be made affordable to all. Whilst we understand the limitations of government funding and the need for a staged approach. We are now calling on the government to release any data they have on the first 48 months of CGM funding. We believe there will be a wealth of evidence to support our stream of anecdotes that demonstrate life renewed. DANII is the only organisation to provide free CGM trials and an extensive 12-month scholarship program. To date we have provided over 1200 CGM trials and 412 CGM 12-month fully funded scholarships. Each CGM scholarship is a life changed and saved at a cost of around $5000. Our focus continues to financially and emotionally support Australians’ most vulnerable and at risk into diabetes management technologies. Our commitment to political advocacy is considerable, despite the Foundations limited resources we continue to lobby and influence the political agenda and also to support our friends when they engage politicians and the media in their local community. Our initial rounds of success was overwhelming and we proudly achieved this in a very short timeframe. Our DANII focus continues in supporting and educating our diabetes community. Our foundations success in saving and changing lives is thankfully supported by the wider community we continue to serve ~ #daniisgift DANII Foundation Jelly Bean Ball 2021 #daniisgift DF_A4 2021 Booklet v10 sw 20210616.indd 4 17/06/2021 8:54:55 AM

ABOUT US A WIN FOR TYPE 1 KIDS, BUT THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER… Firstly I want to say thank-you for being here tonight, supporting the foundation that changed our lives... It is just over 9 years since our world was turned upside down. My 11 year old daughter, Monique was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) when an unexplained autoimmune response killed all the insulin producing cells in her pancreas. Life cannot exist without insulin, so there is no time to gather your thoughts, treatment commences and never ends. To keep her alive I became responsible for calculating and administering a lethal drug that if miscalculated could have catastrophic consequences. Every minute of every day is spent fearing for the future of your child, no matter what age they are. Type 1 Diabetes never ends. You never outgrow this disease, it doesn’t become more manageable with age or maturity, it never rests or takes a holiday, it is 24/7 for the rest of your life. I cannot adequately describe the fear that responsibility invoked from that day. And that was nothing compared to the fear that overcame Monique, ultimately resulting in a diagnosis of anxiety disorder. I could not believe in an age of technology and medical advancement, such archaic methods were used to manage this relentless disease. So began the search for answers, and standards of care in other parts of the world. This led me to the newly established DANII Foundation, and two grieving parents, who were living my worst nightmare. Daniella’s death could have been prevented. A Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) would have saved her life, but the Australian T1D community were in the dark. Donna and Brian made a promise to their Angel, not to stop until this device was approved, affordable and readily available to every Type 1 Diabetic. I’m so grateful I crossed their path. The Foundation took on the unenviable task of lobbying our government for approval of CGM followed by the grueling campaign for its prohibitive cost to be subsidised. They started raising awareness about “What is type ONE” and fundraising through events like tonight’s Jelly Bean Gala Ball to bring to Australia the device and provide CGM trials and Insulin Pump/CGM scholarships to assist those most at risk. Those who are hypo unaware, or pregnant managing erratic hormone affected bloods sugars, or the T1D suffering complete burnout from years of managing this relentless disease, and families like mine - sleep deprived and struggling to provide proper diabetes care to their child crippled with debilitating T1 related anxiety. These trials and scholarships have changed thousands of lives, including mine. 5 years of relentless campaigning and the impossible was achieved. In April 2017, “DANII’s Gift” was partially realised. CGM was made available through Federal Funding to all T1D’s under the age of 21. I cannot describe the relief I felt. This device has had such a positive impact on absolutely every aspect of my entire family’s life. I had lived for 5 years in a constant state of sleep deprivation, compromising the care of my children, my ability to work, to manage my home and care for myself. I can now Sleep! I rely on CGM technology to alarm and DANII Foundation Jelly Bean Ball 2021 #daniisgift DF_A4 2021 Booklet v10 sw 20210616.indd 6 17/06/2021 8:55:07 AM
#DANIISGIFT This makes me feel both gratitude and guilt. Why is Monique’s life more important than the 21 year old starting out in life, the 31 year old starting a family, the 41 year old trying to hold down a job and raise teenagers or..... Why is my sleep deprivation or my fear more valid than the mum of the 50 year old, living alone in another state? This privilege is not shared by an estimated 97,000 Type 1 Diabetics over the age of 21. They continue to live in fear, or bear the enormous costs of self-funding this life saving device, because unlike a pacemaker, it is not funded by Medicare or private health insurance. Donna and Brian’s’ and the DANII Foundation’s mission was and still is all about saving lives. Not just preventing death, but allowing all T1D’s and their families to be free of overwhelming fear and really live their lives. My plea tonight is for each and every one of you to commit to saving the life of all Type 1 Diabetics’, by supporting the work of The DANII Foundation. Can you help us FIGHT ON and provide DANII’s Gift to every single T1D. We need your help to continue wake me when Monique’s blood glucose falls or rises too raising awareness, to provide education about advancements quickly. During the day I can finally breathe, knowing an alarm in T1D care, to continue providing support and education through loan and scholarship programs to improve the lives of will alert Monique or her teachers at school. She can attend T1d’s today and to change the status quo by lobbying for CGM a party or sleepover without the gut wrenching worry that to be made available and affordable for all T1’s. something could go terribly wrong. She now has the space and For whatever contribution you can make, we say a heartfelt freedom to be more independent, to be a “normal” teenager, to thank-you, because without the work and support of Donna, take on a part-time job and to learn to drive. OUR MISSION DANII FOUNDATION VISION AND VALUES vision A world where people with type 1 diabetes live without fear of never waking up. mission To make affordable, life-saving alert technology a reality for people with type 1 diabetes. To educate and advocate for a Type ONE Voice. values Innovative, compassionate, inspirational, caring, driven, focused, brave. What is Type 1 Diabetes DIABETES THE FACTS: Type 1 diabetes is the fastest growing chronic disease in Australian children. There are over 140,000 Australians with type 1 diabetes and with six new cases every day. Australia has one of the highest incident rates in the world. The number of Australian children being diagnosed with this disease is increasing by almost 6.5% every year. Striking both the young and adults, type 1 diabetes destroys the ability to produce insulin, which is vital for life. It requires an essential daily regime of multiple injections or continuous infusion of insulin through a pump, as well as up to 12 finger-prick blood tests. Type 1 diabetes is associated with a significantly increased risk of serious health complications. An autoimmune disease, type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by a complex mixture of genetic and environmental factors but not by an unhealthy diet or obesity. The number of Australians diagnosed with diabetes is expected to grow to 3.5 million by 2033. A DAY IN MY LIFE THE LIFE OF A YOUNG DIABETIC… BY DANIELLA MEADS-BARLOW 2008 I was at school. It was almost half past four in the down when I got across the road and do another test, it was afternoon and I had been studying at the library. I sat getting really hectic. A DAY IN A LIFE “HELLO MY NAME IS TENIKKA, I’M 21 YEARS OF AGE AND I’VE BEEN A TYPE 1 DIABETIC FOR 15 YEARS. HERE IS MY STORY…. When I was 5, just before my diagnosis, I became severely ill. My symptoms were loss of appetite, weight loss and excessive thirst. At my 6th birthday party, I stuffed myself with lollies and cake just like any child would. By the end of the party, I told my grandmother that I wasn’t feeling too well and I wanted to go home. Later that evening I was vomiting, I had a migraine and was fighting my grandmother for water every few minutes. The next day she took me to the doctors where the doctor dismissed my sickness for a cold and I was I just wanted it to disappear so I could be a teenage told to eat vegemite on toast and drink flat lemonade noting girl and worry about teenage things. #DANIISGIFT Greg Leahy ~ CGM Scholarship Recipient ~ Diagnosed in the solomon islands! July 2015 was a life changer for me as a newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic. Diagnosed in The Solomon Islands while I was working there as a Primary Health Care Nurse. Not the best place to be diagnosed in an underdeveloped country. Very challenging conditions as there were only a few insulins that I could administer and injectable equipment was limited. At first diagnoses I was aware of weight loss, vision disturbances, thirst and increased voiding. High urine glucose and a BGL of 35 was evident on examination. After consultation with the GP, insulin was administered ASAP. It was suggested by my nursing management that I be flown to immediately to Brisbane, however due to the lack of outgoing flights it was impossible. SO I quickly learned, I had to manage this new disease myself! Albeit I am a Nurse, my biggest fear at diagnosis was administering insulin to myself and making sure I was doing all the right things to control my BGLs. As a Registered nurse I look after many patients with Diabetes everyday, but having diabetes myself was very different. In my practice as a nurse I can surely sympathise with all my diabetic patients now and have a better understanding of what they too are going through. With increased education from Diabetic educators, Endocrinologists, Dietitians I was able to stabilise and manage my type 1 diabetes condition. There have been many ups and downs that I have been challenged with along the way. My lifestyle was turned completely upside down. My work now in the Emergency Department at The Canberra Hospital became extremely challenged, as I would experience many hypos each day. I have had to change my role in the ED to more regular day shifts which has helped. A friend told me about the DANII Foundation and after investigating and reading about this amazing foundation I was gifted a scholarship to use the CGM. Initially the CGM had its challenges for me, skin irritation was my main issue, yet after using many skin preps and dressings I now have had no issues. The use of the CGM has completely changed my life! I can now see my real time BGLs and the auto suspend that blue-tooths to my insulin pump has saved my life many times over ~ especially at night. Measuring Insulin accurately balanced with glucose levels can be like walking a tight-rope to get it right…. With CGM I live safer. These days in my spare time I look for every opportunity to give-back the gift I have been given. I fundraise for DANII, I mow lawns, create cake-stall, what-ever it takes, so fellow T1Ds can also have this gift of CGM. It just makes sense for Government to fund this life-saving and life-changing device! My Sole WISH would be for CGM to be more affordable and accessible for ALL Australian’s living with type 1 Diabetes and those type 2 who are Insulin dependent. #daniisgift Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to Dance in the Rain 21 DF_A4 2021 Booklet v10 sw 20210616.indd 21 17/06/2021 8:58:13 AM
2021 DANII FOUNDATION VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Rhonda Alexander ~ 2021 Volunteer of the YeaR I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 46 years old, on January 14th, 2004. I knew that if I was to become a diabetic it would be type 1 as it was hereditary in our family. My father and his brothers were Type 1. The day the Doctor told me I was diabetic he gave me tablets thinking I was type 2, but after 2 weeks they hadn’t brought my levels down so I offered to take insulin and I remember the Doctor saying no one offers to take needles and I replied if it is going to help I will, it can’t be that bad, I watched my father all my life. So he gave me syringes, insulin and some directions and sent me home. Over the next 2 weeks my sugars came down to a healthy level and I also lost 40 kilos. The Doctor ordered me not to go to work for the next month or until he was happy with my Blood Glucose levels. The main challenge I have living with Type 1 Diabetes is maintaining a healthy weight and keeping the sugar levels under control. Another big challenge I’ve had is to find an Endocrinologist that supports me and understands me. Something else I find essential in managing my diabetes is to be very strict with my diet, I weigh every meal and add the calories and carbs to maintain a healthy weight and good BGL. Sometimes it can be like riding a roller-coaster! I learnt about the DANII Foundation through the Diabetes NSW magazine where they had travel insurance advertised. It was just a call away and there is where my journey with the Foundation started. I have been on every Jelly Bean Educational Cruise since DANII introduced the inaugural programme. Over the years I‘ve learned a lot from the seminars and workshops on-board from Endocrinologists, Dieticians, and Diabetes Educators and I’ve tried to implement daily their tips and recommendations which has helped me enormously. The Jelly Bean Cruises stopped last year due to COVID-19 but I still continue my journey with the DANII Foundation volunteering my time on a weekly basis. Using the CGM has completely changed my life. The accessibility of looking at my pump and it shows what level my sugars are at is incredible. Knowing that CGM will alert me with this horrific noise if I am dropping too low or going to high is a blessing.
