Burnout: The Erosion of the Healer’s Soul
An estimated 40 percent of physicians report burnout, with some
specialties reporting even higher numbers among their members.
While no data exists on the rate of burnout among veterinarians,
mental health professionals who work within the profession believe
the rate of burnout among veterinary health care professionals is
on par with that experienced by their MD counterparts. What is
burnout and how does it develop? In this lecture we will consider
burnout as both an individual response and a systemic issue and
see how it begins often insidiously with significant negative impact
upon the healer’s personal and professional life.

Using Mindfulness and Self Compassion on Our Journeys
as Healers (2 hours)
Mindfulness, the moment-to-moment awareness that allows
self-observation and compassion, has been scientifically shown
to enhance the care giving of health care professionals. With
mindfulness, burnout is lessened and patients actually improve in
their responses to treatments. In this presentation, we will review
some of the current literature on mindfulness, partake in several
mindfulness exercises that can be used on a daily basis, even in a
busy veterinary practice, and learn how mindfulness, coupled with
self-compassion can improve one’s ability to serve patients, clients
and ourselves. *pre-registration required.

Recognizing and Managing Emotional States:
Part 1: Recognizing Who “Showed Up” Today
Stress challenges optimum healing. Like humans, animals
present to us in varying emotional states and if their needs aren't
recognized and managed, stress increases. The emotional states
are a product of 1) their inherent genetic traits, 2) learned
behaviors, 3) environmental stimuli, and 4) their spirit level, which
can impact the degree to which they express their emotional
states. Needs of an emotional fearful animal that may be an
