The Gaylord Golf Mecca recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary.
That’s thirty years of Gaylord hosting almost 5,000,000 golfers.
How did Gaylord, a quaint northern Michigan village,
become America’s Summer Golf Mecca?
Here’s a peek inside how Gaylord got into the game.

30+YEARS
The year 1987 marked the most significant turning point in
the growth of the fledging golf industry in Gaylord, Michigan.
Harry Melling, a flamboyant auto industry supplier
and NASCAR team owner who earlier purchased the
dated, old Sylvan ski resort on the edge of town, unveiled
the Masterpiece, the last major golf course design by the
legendary architect, Robert Trent Jones, Sr.. The Jones course
would become the generator that jumpstarted Gaylord’s place
in national conversations of golf destinations in the Midwest.
That course
was the first
of four top-
flight layouts

the resort. In
the process,
Jones came
up with the
name, Treetops, after observing the stunning view over the
Pigeon River Valley from the ridge 180-plus feet above the
green of the course’s iconic signature Par 3 sixth hole.
The name Treetops now resonates with golf fans nationwide
as the resort has become the lynchpin of the game in Gaylord.
In 1987, another new Gaylord institution that would
boost the fortunes of local golf, the Gaylord Tourism Bureau,
came on line. It, in turn, spawned the Gaylord Golf Mecca—a
marketing label officials hoped would draw attention to the six
golf courses that signed up as original Mecca members.

Golf Club
Black Lake Golf Club is an 18-hole
course designed by nationally-
acclaimed architect, Rees Jones,
known for his restoration work

Gaylord Golf Club is one of
Northern Michigan’s oldest clubs.

Indian River Golf Club was

The Premier is the only course
in Michigan designed by
famed architect Tom Fazio,
making the most of the rolling
