IMMANUEL’S COMMUNION PRACTICE

We rejoice that our guests have come to hear God’s Word today
with us. Through His Word the Lord speaks of Jesus forgiveness
to us and his peace fills our heart. Today we also celebrate the
Lord’s Supper, which God also describes as a unified joint
confession of faith in Jesus. Therefore we ask that only those
who have confessed a unified faith with us through membership
in a WELS or ELS congregation join us for communion. Thank you
for respecting our beliefs based on God’s Word.

                    Easter Worship
                   Pastor Matthew Sprunger
                   Lacy Siegmund, Organist

We gather on Easter to hear the joyous news of Jesus’
resurrection from the dead. His resurrection assures us that all
our sins have been fully paid for, that death has been defeated
and that we too will rise from the dead on the Last Day to live
with Him in the perfect paradise He will create for us at his
reappearing.

darkness to everlasting life and light.
C: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with

      was the light of men.

Confession of Sins

M: The cross now stands empty. Morning light breaks upon
the tomb. As we come before our God and King, let us
      confess our sins.
C: Lord God, I humbly come before you. I confess that I am
sinful in thought, word, and deed. I daily fail to do what
you command, and continually do what you forbid. Lord,
I am sorry for my sins. For the sake of my Lord Jesus
      Christ, have mercy on me.

M: Upon this your sincere confession, by Christ’s command
and authority, I assure you that your sins are all forgiven.
The vacant cross and empty grave are God’s signs to you
that he has accepted the sacrifice of his one and only Son.
Whoever believes this simple truth of Scripture has
eternal life. The Lord is gracious and righteous!
C: When I was in great need, he saved me.

M:    The Lord is my strength and my song;
C: He has become my salvation.

M: Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the
      righteous:
C: The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!

M: This is the feast of victory for our God!
C: Worthy is Christ the Lamb, who was slain, to receive
power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor
      and glory and praise!

Prayer of the Day

M: Almighty God, by the glorious resurrection of your Son
Jesus Christ you conquered death and opened the gate to
eternal life. Grant that we, who have been raised with him
through baptism, may walk in the newness of life and ever
rejoice in the hope of sharing his glory; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit be
dominion and praise now and forever.
C: Amen.

                                                                 6
A Harmony of the Gospel Accounts of
             Jesus’ Resurrection
Part One
There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came
down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone
and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes
were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they
shook and became like dead men. Mary Magdalene, Mary the
mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might
go to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the first day of the week,
just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they
asked each other, "Who will roll away the stone from the
entrance of the tomb?" But when they looked up, they saw that
the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. Mary
Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been
removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter
and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have
taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they
have put him!"

Part Two
[The other women entered the tomb, but] when they entered,
they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were
wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed
like lightning stood be-side them. In their fright the women
bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to
them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not
here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still
with you in Galilee: 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the
hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised
again.'" Then they remembered his words. Trembling and
bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They
said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. So the women
hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to
tell his disciples.

Part Three
[When they heard Mary's report] Peter and the other disciple
started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple
outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and
looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then
Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the
tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial
cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up
by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who
had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and
believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus
had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to their
homes.

Part Four
Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over
to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where
Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken
my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put
him." At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,
but she did not realize that it was Jesus. "Woman," he said, "why
are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was
the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me
where you have put him, and I will get him." Jesus said to her,
"Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,
"Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). Jesus said, "Do not hold on
to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my

Part Five
[As the other] women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet
filled with joy. . . suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said.
They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then
Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to
go to Galilee; there they will see me." While the women were on
their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to
the chief priests everything that had happened. When the chief
priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the
soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, "You are to say, 'His
disciples came during the night and stole him away while we
were asleep.' If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy
him and keep you out of trouble." So the soldiers took the money
and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely
circulated among the Jews to this very day. When [the women]
came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven
and to all the others. But they did not believe the women,
because their words seemed to them like nonsense. [Not long
after this] Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news:
"I have seen the Lord!" And she told them those things he had
said to her.

Confession of Faith: The Nicene Creed

C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
   maker of heaven and earth,
   of all that is,
   seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
   eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
   begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
                                                              13
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the
   Scriptures.
  He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who in unity with the Father and the Son
         is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

      life for our justification.
C: Alleluia!

      the dead.
C: We praise you for sending the true Life and Light into the
      world.

M: Lord Jesus, God of grace, you have filled our hearts with

      grave.
C: You have conquered the darkness and given us comfort

you for rest, knowing that because of your perfect
redemption there is now no condemnation for us.

                               15
M: Take away our doubts and fears, and daily renew in us the
      joy of our salvation.
C: Alleluia!

M: Holy Spirit, God of grace, you have called us by the gospel
and brought us to saving faith in our risen Lord.
C: We glorify you for opening our eyes to see the light of
      life.

M: Keep us with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.
C: He is risen!

M: As we journey through life, make us yearn for the day
when you will give eternal life to us and all believers in
      Christ.
C: He is risen indeed!

M: Work through us as we proclaim the saving message of
the crucified and risen Jesus near and far, so that many
others may hear your call, obtain the salvation that is in
Christ Jesus, and join us before the throne of our God and
      of the Lamb.
C: Alleluia! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Alleluia!
      Amen.

It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all
places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and
everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who by his
willing sacrifice on the cross took away the sins of the world
and by his glorious resurrection restored everlasting life.
Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we
praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

Prayer of Thanksgiving

M: Lord God, you are worthy to receive thanks and praise
from all people. You created the world and all who live in
it, and in your mercy you saved us. We give thanks to you
for the grace of your Son, Jesus Christ.

Though in very nature God, he took the nature of a
servant and became obedient to death, even death on a
cross. He offered himself as a sacrifice for sin and
redeemed us from its curse and penalty. He rescued us
from the terrors of death and restored eternal life with
you. He conquered our enemies and gained for us the
          kingdom of grace and glory.

Bless us as we receive your Son’s body and blood, and
lead us to remember his suffering, death, and
resurrection. Forgive our sins and fill us with the hope of
new life in heaven. Hear our praise and receive our
thanks as we worship you—the Father, the Son, and the
          Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
  hallowed be your name,
  your kingdom come,
  your will be done
     on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
  as we forgive those
  who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
  and the glory are yours
  now and forever. Amen.

Words of Institution

M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed,
took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it
and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is
my T body, which is given for you. Do this in
       remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them,
saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my T blood of the
new covenant, which is poured out for you for the
forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in
       remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: Amen.

Private Prayer After Communion
Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, for nourishing me in this
sacrament with your body and blood. You have given me
forgiveness, life, and salvation. Let me always remain in you as
a branch remains in the vine. Send me out in the power of your
Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

M:         Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
C: his mercy endures forever.

M: Whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup,
C: we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

M: We give you thanks, O Lord, for the foretaste of the
heavenly banquet you have given us in this Sacrament.
Through this gift you have fed our faith, nourished our
hope, and strengthened our love. By your Spirit, help us
to live as your holy people until that day when you will
receive us as your guests at the wedding supper of the
Lamb, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
           one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

                                                              22
Blessing

M: The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious
      to you.
The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.
C: Amen.

M: Alleluia! Christ is Risen!
C: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

In Christ Alone CW 510
