Who we are

We bring
waterways
to life
Canal & River Trust is the charity
that makes life better by water.
We protect and manage an impressive network of
canals and rivers across England and Wales,
spanning 2,000 miles, and touching the lives of
millions every day. People who spend time on our
waterways are happier and healthier. Nature is
recovering. History is alive.

Your local canal needs you
Our canal network is fragile and vulnerable. Climate
change, and the test of time, are taking their toll.
As a charity, we urgently need donations and
volunteers to ensure our canals are never again
abandoned, and never again fall into disrepair.
Our aim is to ensure that this extraordinary network
of canals and rivers is kept alive, places they run
through are transformed and lives are enriched.

 Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
 & Trevor Basin
 Visitor Centre
There’s a very good reason why our ‘stream
in the sky’, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and 11
miles of the Llangollen canal is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. And it’s not just the
view… Taking the Llangollen Canal across
the River Dee valley in North Wales, the
aqueduct is one of the most awesome
engineering feats on the canal network.
Our free Trevor Basin Visitor Centre is the
best place to start your family day out at
 Pontcysyllte Aqueduct with hands-on models,
videos, local information, and local gifts.

Let’s Activities
As a waterways and wellbeing charity, we have
been developing and expanding a year-round
programme of activities in the heart of
communities across the nation.
We believe that no other UK charity brings so
much free, open and accessible blue and green
space to the doorsteps of so many people and by
offering regular local activities we can have a real
impact on people’s physical and mental wellbeing.
Our free Let’s programme comprises a range of
different activities to suit everyone from Walking,
Fishing and Paddling plus many more. Our Let’s
programme is supported by players of People’s
Postcode Lottery, who are supporting a significant
number of our community engagement events
and outreach programmes in 2022/23.

Water safety
Spending time by the water is a wonderful way to
enjoy the spring and summer months. But please
take care by the water and don’t get in, find other
ways to cool down.
– If you find yourself in the water and in trouble,
float on your back to help you to control your
  breathing. Then shout for help.
– If you see someone in the water, don’t get in to
help them. Call 999 and ask for the Fire Service.
– If your dog gets in the water, don’t get in after it.
Encourage it to swim to you.
