Why bumblebees? “Our natural ecosystems would be radically altered and much poorer without insect pollinators, and in the UK, the predominant pollinators are bumblebees.” (Prof Dave Goulson, founder of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, a Sting in the Tale, 2013.) Bumblebees are iconic, charismatic and captivating insects that play a vital role in the lives of us all by pollinating crops, wildflowers and garden plants, acting as a useful and powerful indicator of the health of our environment and bringing pure inspiration & enjoyment. In the UK, 90% of wild flowers and 74% of crop species are dependent on insect pollination, with bumblebees and other pollinators carrying out 66% of crop pollination in the UK. The most recent estimated annual production value of insect pollination in the UK is £691million. However, bees are declining. Bee diversity has declined in over half of UK landscapes since 1980, and numbers and distribution of many bumblebee species continue to fall. There are currently 24 species of bumblebee in the UK, representing approximately 10% of the world’s bumblebee species. The Kent & Sussex coastline is an important hotspot for rare bumblebees, containing all six species of bumblebee listed on Section 41 of the 2006 NERC Act as species of principal importance for conservation in England. Four of the six can currently be found in the project area; Moss Carder, Brown-banded Carder, Red-shanked Carder, and the Ruderal bumblebee, while a fifth (the Shrill Carder) has also been recorded there during the past decade. A sixth, the Short-haired bumblebee, was declared extinct in the year 2000 but has been the focus of a BBCT-led reintroduction project at Dungeness Brown banded carder bee since 2009. Where The project area covers parts of East Sussex and Kent. In triangular form, from Hythe to Pett Level along the south coast to just south of Cranbrook northwards. When 1st April 2021 – 30th July 2022 What BBCT will be applying to the Green Challenge Recovery Fund which, if successful, will allow us to undertake the final year of the Short-haired Bumblebee Reintroduction Project, important work that has been cut short due to Covid -19, and commence new work for rare bumblebees. 'Bee Connected' is a transition project, endorsed by Natural England, and will deliver on two key themes: 1) Nature conservation and restoration 2) Connecting people with nature It will: * enable us to undertake important monitoring work for the Short-haired bumblebee, Bombus subterraneus, the final year of a reintroduction project. * undertake new work to improve the provision of bumblebee-friendly habitat on a landscape scale, allowing rare species (Bombus humilis, B. muscorum, B. ruderatus, and B. ruderarius) to expand their range. * work with both existing and new audiences; from farmers, landowners and councils to NGOs, local community groups and volunteers, and engage them in the delivery of the project. We are planning to engage the following during the life of this project: ● 45 landowners and farmers ● 45 existing volunteers, 5 new volunteers ● 1000 people (general public) ● 20 community groups ● 2 trainees How The table below shows what we will do to achieve our outcomes: Outcome Outcome Indicator Outputs Expand the diversity Diversity of people 20 talks given to different audiences of the people taking engaging with the Trust 5 events attended action for bumblebees Increased land area is Area of land prepared or 45 sites visited being restored, planted to support 35 landowners engaged created and managed pollinators Area of natural 1500 ha of land advised on. to benefit bumblebees habitats now joined up to 1 farm/landowner demonstration day improve connectivity for 47 kg of seed & 2,700 plug plants pollinators planted for bumblebees.
