BOATING & MARINA NEWS There is nothing like the bond between boaters. Whether at the dock or out on the water you can pretty much count on other boats when you are in need. We also have all experienced that late evening when arriving back to the dock and the winds have picked up and you’re just not sure if you can make it into your slip. Then what do you know, all your dock mates come to your aid! What a great feeling of relief knowing they are there! Please remember, pay it forward. There will always be that time when either you or someone else might need a hand! And of course, if during marina hours, please call the marina team on VHF channel 11 and we too are happy to help! Be eyes for others when on the docks. If you see something that does not look right please notify the marina staff as well as your dock mates. Marina Manager Reminder Sailboat vs. Powerboat Remember that a sailboat running an engine, even if sails are up, is legally categorized as a powerboat. In a congested area it is best not to run the engine with sails still up, because captains of other boats may not be aware of your engine running and may assume you are operating under sailing rules. The rules are simple when a sailboat and a small recreational powerboat meet: In most situations the sailing boat is the stand-on vessel and the powerboat must give way. If the sailboat is overtaking a powerboat, the powerboat is the stand-on vessel and the sailboat must give way. http://wow.uscgaux.info/Uploads_wowII/095-45-01/Rules_of_the_Road_for_Sailboats.pdf Harry Smith, Marina & Aquatics Manager Boating for Ladies Saturday, May 22 | 10:00 AM Come out and enjoy this free, hands on class! Be prepared to take control of the wheel and maneuver the vessel in and out of a slip and in tight areas. An instructor will be with you at all times so no need to panic! The class will be capped after the first 8 registrations. Please RSVP online. 12 | PeninsulaYacht.com
FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS The Ed Sherrard Memorial Power Boater of the Year Award was established a number of years ago by the PYC to encourage participation in the broad range of events hosted by the club and Fleet Committee. Ed was an active member of the club and enjoyed supporting his fellow boaters in maximizing their enjoyment of our beautiful lake. Points are awarded for a wide range of the Peninsula Yacht Club activities, and extend beyond power boat events (Raft-Ups, Lakewide History Tours, Poker Run and many others) to include credit for volunteer participation in key club efforts as well as completion of the educational and safety seminars that keep our members safe. The winner receives recognition in our club publications, a plaque, and a $100 gift card. In April, the Lakewide History Tour (5 points) and Scavenger Hunt (10 points) provided the first points opportunities of the year; congratulations to Mark Benno, who participated in both events and currently leads the points race for the year. In May, will see additional points awarded for our first Raft-Up of the season on May 22 (15 points for bringing your boat; 10 points for coming with another member) and for volunteer support of the Fleet Commissioning/Shrimp Fest on May 30th (5 points). Note that we recognize all safety seminars – whether sponsored by our club or another organization – with an award of 5 points for every three events attended. COMMODORE'S COMMENTS Good day and I hope you are having a wonderful start of your Summer! As a Member of PYC, I have had the good fortune of meeting many of you and for those I have not met yet, I look forward to the opportunity. The Fleet Committee and I always welcome suggestions on how to make your Member experience better so if you have any thoughts, please let us know. As your Fleet Captain, I wanted to take a moment to introduce you to the activities we (the Fleet Committee) are concentrated on that are externally based. While most of our work on the Peninsula Yacht Club Fleet Committee is internally based (providing insight to the Management of the Club on the interests and needs of our Members) there is a portion of our work that is externally focused as well. Here are a few examples: Publicity of PYC Fleet Events via media outlets: I am pleased to say that we have a wonderful relationship with the local media and welcome their engagement as we promote our Boater Safety Programs as well as our Silent Auction to help support local Charities. Support the Fleet Committee Chair of Safety & Education: Planning and developing Boater Safety Programs and providing Boater Education for our Members are at the heart of our existence. Working with PYC Management, local marine enforcement, and education agencies to bring Boater Safety resources to our Members is part of our offering. Lead, coordinate, and deliver a successful 2021 Silent Auction: With the capable support of the Power and Sail Captains, our Silent Auction Committee, Volunteers and Sponsors, we are planning for another successful Silent Auction in 2021 (to be held September 4th – Save the Date) to help benefit the three local Charities that we support. 1. Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center 2. Levine Dickson Hospice House, 3. Calvin Newman Youth Boating Safety Fund Optimize relationships and engagement with LKN Yacht Clubs and National organizations There are many clubs and organizations on Lake Norman. Therefore, it is imperative to establish communications, discuss resources, coordinate Fleet Committee open events, and identify opportunities of mutual benefit. Together we all win and provide our Members with the best experience. Have a wonderful and safe Summer – I look forward to seeing you at PYC or on the water. Chris Slocum, Fleet Captain RAFT UP Saturday, May 22 line Please register on 12:00 - 4:00 PM u are to let us know yo Location: Reggie’s Cove coming! Come out for food and fun!
