Julie Schafer has helped coordinate some of the
many youth events in Virginia Run, in particular
                        Winterfest and the Spooktacular.

                        1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN
                        VIRGINIA RUN?
My husband and I moved to Virginia Run with our
one-year-old daughter in October of 2013. We
immediately felt welcomed to the community and
over the last 7 years have grown to love the family
friendly atmosphere of this beautiful neighborhood.

                        2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT
                        THE NEIGHBORHOOD?
We love all that our awesome neighborhood has to
offer! When we began our search for a single-family
home, I had two co-workers who had lived here
for years and loved it. They really talked it up and
told us what a great place it was to raise a family.
When we came to check it out, we really loved the
pool, community center, walking trails, basketball
and tennis courts, and the proximity to the JMRC
and multiple playgrounds. We also love the feeling
of community we get here with the bi-annual yard
sales, the children’s clothing and toy sale, and
the multiple neighborhood parties and events for
                        adults and children.

                        3. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?
For fun I like to travel, spend time at my family’s
lake house in upstate NY, go out to eat, and enjoy
spending time with our neighbors and friends.
You will regularly find us enjoying a cozy fire in our
driveway while our kids are racing around on their
                        bikes with friends.

REGULAR HEALTHCARE
DURING THE PANDEMIC
Dr. Laurie Markin is a Family Doctor in Centreville, Virginia.
She has practiced in the community for the past 25 years,
and has worked with her patients to address a broad
range of chronic and immediate care needs. Here are her
responses to some common questions about healthcare
during the pandemic and how her practice, Rocky Run
Family Medicine, is prepared to help.

Is it important to make follow up visits for routine care during the
pandemic? Absolutely!! Many people feel that if they are feeling well, they do
not need to see their medical provider for “routine” care due to risks during the
COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is equally or even more critical than usual to
continue seeing your practitioner during this time to ensure you stay well just in
case you do have an exposure. Also, given CDC guidelines, maintaining your health
is paramount for anyone who has underlying medical conditions. And doing so in
person, with appropriate pre-screening, is the best alternative!

What will be done during a routine or follow-up visit? During routine

                                                                                        MINUTES
or follow-up visits, a provider has the opportunity to ensure things are going
smoothly with your care by reviewing medications, laboratory values and, of
course, performing appropriate exams to detect any abnormalities. Any time a
patient is seen in the office, there is the opportunity to review health maintenance
issues such as updating vaccines, screening recommendations and checking-in
both physically and emotionally. As you or your child may currently have time
flexibility, now is also a great time for routine wellness checks.

Is it safe to come to the doctor’s office now? Yes, as long as appropriate
precautions are taken. At Rocky Run we pre-screen all patients prior to having
them make an in person office visit. We have reconfigured out waiting room
area, added new air filtration systems, and put up Plexiglas at our cheek-in and
check-out windows. All staff and all patients / visitors are masked at all times in
the facility, and extra cleaning procedures have been implemented - in addition to
those that were already in place.

What about televisits? The providers at Rocky Run are able to, and do
perform many televisits. However, in person visits remain the “gold-standard” of
patient care, and we have procedures in place to determine when a televisit is
appropriate. The process is considerate of both the patient’s needs (what is the
most appropriate way to take care of this patient) and the needs of fellow patients
and staff. Certain things can only be done face to face. Video evaluations can only
go so far to help in caring for a person, though they are very helpful when a patient
may have a contagious disease such as COVID-19. In general, ensuring someone
remains in quarantine is very important to decrease the risk of infecting others,
but once it has been deemed safe for a patient to be seen in the office, that is
the preferred method to care for that person. Nothing beats seeing a patient in
3-dimensions!

Nestled within parkland, Virginia Run features traditional, single-family homes on lush one-third to five acre lots.
Children and adults connect with neighbors and nature on interlacing street sidewalks and an extensive trail system
which meanders through Virginia Run’s common ground, wooded parkland and flowering meadows. The Horn is a
monthly publication distributed to residents of Virginia Run and is the HOA’s official community publication.

GCG has been contracted by the Virginia Run HOA to redesign the Horn into a four color luxury magazine to
better reflect the premier status of the neighborhood. If you target Virginia Run for your products or services you
need to be in this neighborhood resource. Call or email GCG to secure your position today!
