Republik Indonesia di Perth
Setelah terpilih sebagai Ketua Indonesian Diaspora Network Western Australia pada
Juli 2018, Bapak Haris Kumar sebagai Ketua IDN WA yang baru bergerak cepat untuk
membentuk tim IDN WA. Pada tanggal tim dari IDN WA bertemu dengan Ibu Dewi Tobing
selaku Konsul Jenderal Republik Indonesia di Perth. Audiensi kali ini untuk melaporkan
perkembangan dan aktifitas apa saja yang telah di lakukan oleh IDN WA untuk para
Diaspora Indonesia di Western Australia maupun masyarakat yang ada di Indonesia.
Ibu Dewi berharap dengan adanya Indonesian Diaspora Network Western Australia yang
aktif dapat membantu masyarakat di Indonesia maupun di Western Australia.

Antusiasme para Kepala Sekolah
dalam Principal Networking Dinner
2019
Pada hari Jumat 8 Maret 2019, Konsulat Jenderal Republik Indonesia di Perth (KJRI Perth) untuk pertama
kalinya mengadakan Principal Networking Dinner yang dihadiri oleh para kepala sekolah dan perwakilan dari
21 sekolah negeri di WA. Acara ini adalah bentuk apresiasi kepada sekolah-sekolah yang memilih Bahasa
Indonesia sebagai bahasa asing yang diajarkan di sekolah masing-masing. KJRI Perth mengundang Karen
Bailey Ketua Balai Bahasa Indonesia Perth (BBIP), Presiden Indonesia Institute Ross Taylor dan Brendon Cook
yang merupakan ketua Westralia Indonesian Language Teachers Association (WILTA). Acara dibuka dengan
tarian Gading Alit dari Jawa Timur yang dibawakan Tifani Cecilia, salah satu asisten bahasa Indonesia dari
Language Teacher Assistant Program 2019.
Sambutan Ibu Dewi Gustina Tobing sebagai Konsul Jenderal KJRI Perth menjadi pembuka acara Principal
Networking Dinner 2019. Dalam sambutannya, disampaikan peningkatan tajam pada tingkat sekolah dasar
yang mengajarkan bahasa Indonesia pada tahun 2018 di Australia Barat. Pada kesempatan ini Ibu Konjen
mengucapkan penghargaan kepada Pemerintah Australia Barat atas kebijakannya yang mewajibkan sekolah
untuk mengajarkan bahasa asing. Dalam kaitan ini, Ibu Konjen menyampaikan terima kasih kepada para
Kepala Sekolah yang telah memilih bahasa Indonesia di sekolahnya serta dukungan para guru untuk
pengajaran ini. Bahasa Indonesia dapat berperan dalam mempererat hubungan bilateral antara Indonesia
dan Australia.Michelle Ostberg dari Department of Education WA menyampaikan antara lain tentang program
Bahasa Indonesia sebagai salah satu bahasa asing yang merupakan program wajib untuk dipelajari. Sejak
2016, disebutkan oleh Mrs Ostberg mengenai peningkatan terhadap bahasa Indonesia yang dari tahun ke
tahun, dan dengan peningkatan tajam di tahun 2018, jumlah murid di sekolah dasar negeri di Australia Barat
saat ini sebanyak lebih dari 27.000 orang. Program Bahasa Indonesia yang sampai saat ini dijalankan (terkini)
yaitu Program Ketawa diharapkan dapat dijalankan dengan baik, dan dapat mengembangkan pengetahuan
murid-murid terhadap Bahasa Indonesia.

Setelah makan malam, acara dilanjutkan dengan penyampaian materi oleh Omar Harris sebagai Konsul
Informasi, Sosial dan Budaya mengenai berbagai kegiatan KJRI Perth yang dapat mendukung pengajaran
bahasa Indoensia di sekolah. Disampaikan antara lain acara Kreasi Indonesia 2019 yang akan diadakan bulan
Oktober nanti dan kegiatan workshop budaya dalam kerangka school excursion dan incursion.
Acara ini juga diisi pemaparan dari Karen Bailey dan Brendon Cook mengenai hubungan Indonesia dan
Australia serta perkembangan dan tantangan program Bahasa Indonesia yg dijalani sampai saat ini. Tidak
hanya itu, Ross Taylor juga menyoroti bagaimana hubungan dagang Indonesia dan Australia dapat terjalin
dengan baik melalui Bahasa Indonesia, yang kini berkembang signifikan. Para kepala sekolah dan guru yang
hadir tampak antusias selama acara makan malam. Andrew Fraser, salah satu kepala sekolah yang hadir
menyampaikan tanggapan positif dan menyampaikan “senang dan bermanfaat” terhadap acara ini sehingga
diskusi dan informasi yang disampaikan semakin memperkuat kehadiran bahasa Indonesia di Australia Barat.
Kepala sekolah yang lain juga menyampaikan penghargaan serupa dan berharap semakin banyak kerjasama
antara sekolah di Australia Barat dengan sekolah di Indonesia.

Tanda Elipsis
Tahukah Anda apa yang dimaksud dengan tanda elipsis? Banyak tulisan di berbagai media, baik cetak
maupun elektronik apalagi media sosial yang masih kurang tepat dalam menggunakan tanda elipsis
(élipsis). Tanda baca macam apa itu?
Tanda elipsis (bahasa Yunani: ἔλλειψις, élleipsis, “penghilangan”) adalah tanda baca yang biasanya
menandai penghilangan sengaja suatu kata atau frasa dari teks aslinya. ... Simbol untuk tanda elipsis
adalah rangkaian tiga tanda titik (...) atau suatu glif yang berupa tiga bintik (…).
Dalam PUEBI (Pedoman Umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia) disebutkan: Tanda elipsis dipakai untuk
menunjukkan bahwa dalam suatu kalimat atau kutipan ada bagian yang dihilangkan.
Misalnya:
1. Penyebab kemerosotan ... akan diteliti lebih lanjut.
2. ..., lain lubuk lain ikannya.
3. Hmm … sebenarnya aku sudah memberikan buku itu padanya kemarin malam.
4. Sudahlah … toh kita tidak merugi!
5. Entahlah … aku tak bisa memberitahumu.
6. Bukankah orang itu … anggap saja kita tidak melihatnya.
7. Baiklah … kita akan bicara lagi besok siang.
8. Pagi … belum ada yang datang ?
9. Aduh … kenapa lama sekali?
Catatan Penting
(1) Tanda elipsis itu harus didahului dan diikuti dengan spasi.
(2) Jika tanda elipsis digunakan pada akhir kalimat, jumlah titik-titik tersebut adalah empat. Tiga titik
pertama merupakan tanda elipsis dan satu titik terakhir merupakan tanda titik untuk mengakhiri kalimat
tersebut.
Contoh penggunaan tanda elipsis di akhir kalimat:
1. Mereka akhirnya hidup bahagia selama-lamanya ….
2. Dalam Undang-Undang Dasar 1945 disebutkan bahwa bahasa negara ialah ....
3. Jangan lupa membalas smsku ya ….
4. Apalagi yang kalian ributkan, pusing ….

Tanda elipsis dipakai untuk menulis ujaran yang tidak selesai dalam dialog.
Misalnya:
1. “Menurut saya ... seperti ... bagaimana, Bu?”
2. “Jadi, kesimpulannya ... oh, sudah saatnya istirahat.”
Dari sumber Wikipedia, tanda elipsis dapat menunjukkan jeda pada pembicaraan, pikiran yang belum
selesai, atau, pada akhir kalimat, penurunan volume menuju kesenyapan (aposiopesis). Tanda ini lebih
sering dijumpai dalam kalimat langsung untuk menciptakan percakapan lebih hidup. Tanda elipsis membuat
pembaca lebih mudah meresapi keadaan yang sedang terjadi dalam percakapan tersebut.
Contoh:
“Ayooo … kita serang mereka!” teriak komandan pasukan.
Kalimat di atas menggambarkan sebuah pertarungan yang panas. Tanda elipsis di situ memberikan efek jeda
yang menambah kesan semangat.
“Tapi … sudahlah, tak apa,” katanya lirih.
Kalimat ini menyatakan sebuah penyesalan. Ada kesan “sedang berpikir” begitu kata “tapi” dilafalkan.
Namun, kesan ini akan diperjelas oleh bagian kalimat lanjutannya, “sudahlah” yang memberi kesan “berpikir
karena penyesalan”
“Hmm … selanjutnya kita ke mana?” wajah mereka bertatapan.
Kalimat tersebut mendeskripsikan sebuah kebingungan. Ada kesan “sedang berpikir” setelah mengucapkan
kata “hmm” yang memberi kesan “berpikir karena kebingungan”.
Ada tiga bentuk kesalahan penggunaan tanda elipsis yang paling sering dilakukan.
1. Jumlah tanda titik kurang atau lebih dari standar baku yaitu tiga titik.
2. Penulisan tanda elipsis di tengah kalimat tidak diapit dengan spasi.
3. Format penggunaan tanda elipsis di akhir kalimat kurang dari empat titik.

Pimpinan IDN-Global dan IDN-United Gelar Pertemuan Perdana
Jakarta, 16 Maret 2019 – Pimpinan Indonesian Diaspora Network-United (IDN-U) dan
Indonesian Diaspsora Network-Global (IDN-G) bertemu pada hari Jumat (15/3) di Jakarta.
Pertemuan perdana antara kedua pimpinan eksekutif kedua organisasi tersebut diwakili oleh
Presiden Mark Gerald Eman, Yenni Thamrin, dan Yurdi Yasmi dari IDN-Global, sedangkan dari
IDN-United diwakili oleh Presiden Herry Utomo. Turut hadir Presiden Indonesian Diaspora
Foundation Ida Utomo dan mantan Direktur Eksekutif IDN-United Hamdan Hamedan.
Pertemuan yang berlangsung selama hampir tiga jam itu berjalan lancar, bersahabat, dan
menghasilkan beberapa kesepakatan sebagai berikut:
1. Kedua organisasi mempertegas kembali peran strategis diaspora Indonesia dalam
kemajuan Indonesia
2. Sebagai organisasi yang independen, IDN-United dan IDN-Global senantiasa membuka
diri dan siap bermitra dengan pemerintah dan pihak lainnya guna mengupayakan
kemajuan dan pembangunan Indonesia
3. IDN-Global dan IDN-United sepakat untuk menjajaki kemungkinan mempersatukan
kembali kedua organisasi dan penyelenggaraan Kongres/Konferensi bersama
4. Proses penjajakan akan dilakukan dengan prinsip kesetaraan, kebijaksanaan, dan
kehati-hatian sehingga dapat tercipta roadmap yang tepat.

Today Indonesian Diaspora Network Western Australia, represented by the vice president, Mr. Aaron Harun and
I, visited wesley College to see first hand the process of learning Indonesian by Indonesian language teacher
Laura Wimsett accompanied by an Indonesian language assistant teacher Mr. Emir Faisal.
Wesley College runs an innovative language program with students learning Indonesian through a range of
collaborative activities. On the day we visited, Year 9s had been learning soccer skills with ex-Persib Bandung
player Robbie Gaspar, and Year 10s were cooking perkedel in the state-of-the-art Wesley Languages Centre

Partai politik mana yang paling
populer di jagad maya Indonesia?
Hadrian Geri Djajadikerta, Ella S. Prihatini dan Muhammad Sigit Andhi Rahman
Setengah dari 260 juta penduduk Indonesia kini terhubung dengan internet, dan rata-rata menghabiskan
hampir 9 jam per hari online. Penelitian bersama Google-Temasek memperkirakan bahwa Indonesia akan
memiliki 215 juta pengguna internet pada tahun 2020, menjadikannya peringkat keempat pemakai internet
terbanyak di dunia.
Meski ratusan juta orang di Indonesia menghabiskan banyak waktu di internet, hanya sedikit yang diketahui
tentang pemanfaatan internet oleh partai-partai politik di Indonesia untuk berhubungan langsung dengan
pemilih dan menyebarkan pesan-pesan politik mereka melalui kampanye virtual.
Sementara itu, dalam beberapa tahun terakhir makin jelas terlihat bagaimana partai-partai politik di negara-
negara lain, misalnya di Amerika Serikat dan Inggris, memanfaatkan media sosial dan menggencarkan
pemasaran politik secara digital dalam pemilu.
Apakah partai-partai di Indonesia sudah memaksimalkan potensi media sosial untuk mendulang pemilih
untuk menang pemilu? Dan adakah korelasi antara jumlah kursi di parlemen serta usia partai terhadap
popularitas mereka di internet?
Popularitas partai di media sosial
Untuk menjawab pertanyaan di atas, kami meneliti penggunaan internet oleh 16 partai politik peserta
pemilu 2019. Kami mengamati akun-akun media sosial yang didaftar oleh partai ke Komisi Pemilihan Umum
(KPU) sebagai akun resmi mereka untuk periode kampanye jelang Pemilu 2019. Masa observasi riset kami
berlangsung sepanjang 23 September 2018 hingga 4 Desember 2018.
Kami menemukan bahwa semua partai, kecuali Partai Keadilan dan Persatuan Indonesia (PKPI), menggunakan
media sosial sebagai alat untuk menyebarluaskan materi kampanye mereka kepada publik. Namun,
pemanfaatan dan kinerja platform media sosial partai ternyata beragam tingkatannya. Mayoritas partai
menggunakan empat platform: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, dan YouTube. Lima partai tidak memiliki akun di
YouTube.
Rata-rata partai politik di Indonesia telah menggunakan Facebook selama 4 tahun, Twitter selama 5 tahun,
dan Instagram selama 2 tahun. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa Twitter adalah platform media sosial yang
paling mapan yang digunakan oleh partai. Bahkan ada lima partai yang telah menggunakan Twitter selama
lebih dari enam tahun.

Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDI-P) adalah partai dengan akun Facebook paling tua. Bergabung
dengan situs jejaring sosial ini sejak 2008, dua tahun sejak Facebook terbuka untuk siapa pun di atas 13
tahun yang memiliki alamat email. Sementara itu, Partai Amanat Nasional (PAN) telah bergabung dengan
Facebook selama 8 tahun terakhir, diikuti oleh Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) yang akunnya telah terdaftar
sejak 7 tahun lalu.
Namun, menarik untuk dicatat bahwa meski menjadi tiga partai politik Indonesia pertama yang membuat
akun Facebook, popularitas PDI-P (sekitar 1,5 juta follower), PAN (187.000), dan PKS (615.000) di Facebook
jauh lebih rendah daripada Gerindra dengan sekitar 3,6 juta follower dan Partai Solidaritas Indonesia
dengan sekitar 2,9 juta follower.

Studi kami juga menemukan bahwa usia partai tidak menentukan popularitas partai di dunia maya. Gerindra
yang didirikan hanya 10 tahun yang lalu telah menjadi partai yang paling populer di semua media sosial,
kecuali YouTube.
Partai yang lebih tua seperti Golkar dan Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP) jauh tertinggal dalam
mengumpulkan dukungan online.
Akun Golkar di Twitter yang dilaporkan kepada KPU sebagai akun resmi media sosial partai selama kampanye
2019, sebagai contoh, ada empat; @2DPP-Golkar, @fraksigolkar, @GoJo2019, dan @GolkarBalitbang. Akun
@2DPP-Golkar tidak dapat ditemukan, sementara @fraksigolkar memiliki 10.200-an pengikut. Selanjutnya
@GoJo2019, yang merupakan akun Relawan Golkar Jokowi, hanya memiliki 200-an followers. Dan @
GolkarBalitbang diikuti oleh 881 akun di Twitter.
Kondisi serupa terjadi di kubu PPP. Di jagad Twitter, partai ini mengusung 2 akun; @DPP_PPP dengan 38.100-
an pengikut, dan @sahabatgusrommy yang hanya memiliki 1.140 followers. Demikian pula, PDI-P sebagai
pemenang dalam pemilu 1999 dan 2014, popularitasnya di media sosial jauh di belakang partai yang lebih
muda.
Transisi digital
Partai politik di Indonesia tampaknya masih meraba-raba dalam penggunaan media digital sebagai alat untuk
menyebarkan informasi. Para pengurus partai memiliki prioritas yang berbeda-beda terkait peningkatan
popularitas virtual mereka.
Beberapa partai menganggap popularitas di Facebook atau Twitter tidak terlalu penting. Atau, mereka belum
benar-benar memahami strategi berkampanye di media sosial.
Partai Demokrat adalah salah satu partai yang lemah dalam strategi berkampanye di internet. Partai ini
menggunakan “kode” baru yang berasal dari nomor urut partai untuk Pemilu 2019: 14.
Kode yang mereka gunakan adalah “S14P” (dibaca: “siap”) dan mereka membuat akun-akun media sosial
yang sama sekali baru dengan menggunakan kode ini. Sepertinya manajer media sosial Partai Demokrat
ingin kode ini menunjukkan pada warganet bahwa Demokrat siap untuk memenangkan pesta demokrasi
2019. Menariknya, partai ini menjalankan akun resmi lain di Twitter sejak 2011 (@PDemokrat) dengan sekitar
88.500 pengikut dan 10.600 tweets. Sementara, semua akun media sosial yang mereka daftarkan ke KPU
menggunakan kode “S14P” dan hanya memiliki segelintir pengikut.
Kami menilai keputusan untuk mendaftarkan akun media sosial yang sama sekali baru adalah kurang
tepat. Ini menunjukkan elit Demokrat tidak memperhatikan dengan saksama strategi membangun isu dan
menjaring pemilih via internet.
Untuk mempertahankan keterlibatan publik dan untuk meningkatkan loyalitas mereka kepada partai, akun
media sosial harus selalu konsisten sehingga jumlah pengikut atau likes dapat terus tumbuh.
Salah strategi ini ternyata tidak unik di Demokrat saja. Partai-partai lain, seperti Partai Hati Nurani Rakyat
(Hanura), mendaftarkan banyak akun baru di media sosial kepada KPU sebagai media sosial resmi mereka
untuk pemilu 2019 daripada mempertahankan akun yang lebih mapan dan lebih populer.
Kursi di parlemen
Setelah memantau popularitas partai-partai politik di media sosial, kami kemudian memeriksa apakah ada
hubungan antara kursi partai di parlemen hasil Pemilu 2014 dan popularitas mereka di media sosial.
Kami menggunakan paket corrplot yang tersedia di aplikasi perangkat lunak RStudio untuk
memvisualisasikan matriks korelasi antara kursi partai dan usia akun media sosial mereka.

Gambar di atas menunjukkan bahwa kursi partai hanya memiliki korelasi kuat dan positif (0,67) dengan usia
akun Facebook. Kami menyimpulkan ada korelasi antara usia akun medsos dengan jumlah kursi di parlemen
hasil pemilu 2014. Semakin tua umur akun Facebook sebuah partai, sebagai contoh, kecenderungannya
adalah partai tersebut memiliki kursi yang semakin banyak di parlemen.
Sementara, usia partai memiliki korelasi yang lemah dan negatif dengan popularitas di Facebook / F_L (-0,22)
dan YouTube / Y_S (-0,21). Kami berkesimpulan partai yang lebih tua kurang populer di Facebook dan YouTube
dibandingkan dengan partai yang lebih muda.
Hal penting lain dari temuan kami adalah bahwa popularitas partai di berbagai platform media sosial
memiliki korelasi yang kuat dan positif. Jumlah likes di Facebook sejalan dengan volume pengikut Instagram /
I_F (0,80). Hal yang sama berlaku dengan jumlah pelanggan YouTube dan pengikut Twitter, dengan skor 0,75.
Menariknya, usia akun Facebook milik partai dan jumlah likes memiliki skor korelasi yang lebih lemah (0,44)
dibandingkan dengan usia akun Instagram / I_A dan pengikut Instagram (0,76) atau di YouTube (0,7) dan
Twitter (0,67).
Dengan demikian, riset ini menyimpulkan pola popularitas partai di internet berbeda-beda tergantung pada
jenis media sosial. Facebook tampaknya memiliki kecepatan yang lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan platform
media sosial lainnya dalam hal mendulang minat atau dukungan publik.
Prediksi hasil pemilu
Riset tentang penggunaan media sosial oleh partai politik di Indonesia masih akan terus berkembang,
mengikuti kian bergeliatnya pemanfaatan jalur ini sebagai wahana berkampanye dan mendulang dukungan.
Dengan volume pengguna internet yang terus meningkat, sangat besar peluang bagi partai dan politikus

untuk menggunakan akun-akun sosial mereka demi menguatkan profil politik.
Namun, di sisi lain, sebagaimana riset kami menunjukkan, untuk saat ini mayoritas partai di Indonesia belum
memanfaatkan internet sebagai medium berkampanye dan merebut dukungan massa. Dan popularitas di
jagad maya belum secara akurat diterjemahkan sebagai tingkat kesuksesan elektoral.
Dengan kata lain, kami menemukan bahwa media sosial di Indonesia–baik oleh partai, politikus, dan pemilih–
belum terlalu signifikan digunakan sebagai wadah aktivisme politik (political activism).
Itu sebabnya, keriuhan di media sosial belum benar-benar bisa menjadi tolak ukur keberhasilan partai
menggiring isu dan mendulang dukungan suara di pemilu. Interaksi di media sosial di Indonesia belum bisa

Pelabuhan Sibolga pernah
berjaya sebagai salah satu simpul
perdagangan di Sumatra.
Kapal-kapal Eropa hilir-mudik ke pelabuhan itu. Kejayaan inilah yang ingin kita bangkitkan kembali.
Selama tiga tahun, Pelabuhan Sibolga di Sumatra Utara ditata dan dikembangkan, dan sekarang
sudah selesai. Hari Minggu 17 Maret lalu, saya datang ke sana dan takjub: Pelabuhan Sibolga
kini telah memiliki fasilitas yang jauh lebih baik. Tidak heran, desain pelabuhan di Sibolga ini
memenangi penghargaan desain pelabuhan terbaik di Asia Pasifik!
Pelabuhan Sibolga telah dilengkapi dermaga multiguna sepanjang 153 meter dan memiliki
tambatan 405 meter yang bisa disandari empat kapal sekaligus. Terminal penumpangnya dulu
hanya 80 orang, sekarang bisa menampung 500 orang.
Semoga Pelabuhan Sibolga kembali menjadi pusat lalu-lintas logistik barang dan jasa, dan
menggerakkan roda perekonomian Sibolga dan kawasan sekitar.

Petinju Indonesia kembali
bertanding di Perth
Dua petinju asal Indonesia kembali bertanding di Perth. Setelah beberapa bulan sebelumnya 4
petinju telah bertanding di Perth. Kali ini Heri dan .. bertanding melawan 2 petinju asal Australia.
Ada yang berbeda di pertandingan kali ini karena Diaspora Indonesia datang untuk mendukung
dua petinju asal Indonesia ini. Sebelum pertandingan para petinju di berikan pengarahan oleh
Bapak Yonas yang telah lama berkecimpung di dunia tinju Australia.
Berikut informasi dari dua petinju Indonesia yang datang untuk bertanding :

Bertinju sejak Usia 13 Tahun. Menjadi petinju karena hobby dan mau mengubah hidup keluarga
untuk menjadi lebih baik. Latar belakang dari keluarga sederhana di Purworejo Jawa Tengah.
Mulai bertinju amatir mulai tahun 2000-2004 dan menjuarai beberapa kejuaraan. Sudah
bertanding kurang lebih 40 kali dari beberapa event kejuaran tinju di Indonesia.
Tahun 2004 masuk tinju profesional dan sempat menjadi Juara Nasional tahun 2009 yang di
pertahankan selama 5 tahun di kelas lighweight baik dari Beberapa komisi tinju di Indonesia
seperti KTI (Komisi tinju Indonesia) KTPI (Komisi Tinju Profesional Indonesia) ATI (Asosiasi Tinju
Indonesia) dan FTI (Federasi Tinju Indonesia). Walaupun telah melepas gelar yang sudah di raih
Heri masih berlatih sampe sekarang.
Rekor bertanding Profesional 25 Menang (11ko) 28 Kalah 2seri.
Selain sebagai atlet tinju Heri berkerja sebagai pegawai Honor di Dinas Dindikpora (Dinas
Pendidikan pemuda dan olah raga) di Kab.Kulonprogo Yogyakarta dan juga menjadi seorang
Pelatih Profesional kebugaran dan mencetak atlet-atlet Tinju sebagai penerus prestasi Indonesia.

Champion Bay Senior High School at Geraldton facilitated Indonesian cultural workshops provided by KJRI
Perth. Students from Y7-10 from the high school participated in the dance and puppet workshop. They were
enthusiastic in trying the dance moves and playing the paper and wooden puppets. Teacher Tiana Barnard
helped organizing the workshops.
Consul General Ibu Dewi and team visited Bluff Point PS. KJRI Perth were invited by Principal Mrs Sem Bellve to
attend Malay Wedding held by the school as part of their Harmony Day celebration. Beautiful mock wedding,
delicious food and warm reception really made the day a great one! Bluff Point PS is one of 15 schools in
Geraldton, WA teaching Indonesian language.
In Geraldton, The Consul General had a meeting with Midwest Development Commission, MW Chambers of
Commerce and Industry as well as Mayor of Geraldton to discuss potential economic cooperation between
Indonesia and Midwest region.

Consul General Ibu Dewi was invited by Perth USAsia Centre and UWA Public Policy Institute to speak about
the upcoming presidential election. She shared with the audience how KJRI Perth and overseas election
committee in WA are preparing the event. Currently there are around 9000 registered voters across WA.
Election will be held on 13 April. Two other speakers were Prof Hadrian Djajadikerta from ECU and Mrs Ella
Prihatini, a PhD student from UWA. Several aspects were discussed i.e. women and youth participation, the
role of mainstream and social media, etc.
Consul General Dewi Tobing have received Mr. Chris Barnes, Australian Consul General in Surabaya,
accompanied by Ms. Kate O’Shaugnessy, Deputy Director WA State office DFAT, have met to consolidate
efforts to fully utilize Indonesia - Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. Both Consul

The Consul General encourage the students to be active and enjoy the time spent in Australia while
studying. PPIA WA organised numerous events ranging from seminars, sports events, as well as music
and cultural festivals. On the occasion, the Indonesian Consulate General in Perth also facilitate online
self-report service (lapor diri online) for the new PPIA WA members, through “Portal Peduli WNI”.
Indonesian Muslim community in Perth visited Ibu Dewi to discuss the plan for Ramadhan and Eid
which has always been supported by KJRI Perth. Prior to Ramadhan, they will have Islamic competition
and festival at the Consulate’s office.

the Consul General of Australia in Surabaya.

KJRI Perth Activity
(01/03/2019) Ms. Dewi Tobing, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Perth facilitated the visit
from the Special Autonomy Bureau of the Papua Province. The Bureau discussed about the progress
of Indonesian students from Papua in Western Australia and high hopes that they will contribute to
develop the province once they finish their studies.
The Consul General along with Western Australian leading travel agents and travel writers were invited
to experience the A330-300 Airbus of Garuda Indonesia Plane. On Nyepi’s day, no flights permitted to fly
to Bali and the Airbus which was taxing in Perth has given us a good opportunity to feel its warmth and
spacious of Garuda Indonesia aircraft (7/3/2019).

Welcoming BBQ in Western
Australia
On the 9th of March 2019, PPIA WA as well as their branches held an annual welcoming BBQ to greet all
those new students that has arrived in Perth as well as the one that is currently studying in Perth, the event
started with a welcome message that is given by our current consul general Ibu Dewi Tobing. She gave us a
few advices of living abroad as well as information regarding the consulate general of Indonesia. The support
that she has given affect all of the new students because it makes them feel like they are taken care of. The
event then continued with another welcoming message from our head of PPIA WA which is Alma, followed
up by an ice breaking game which helped the students to get to know each other better. The game that we
played was an arranging game where all the team members has to know each other and arrange themselves
according to the categories.
After the game ended, Alma head of PPIA WA ask to those who are first year students as well as the students
that are new in Perth to step forward and introduce themselves, thus concluding the event. The students
then started to head to the barbeque station to get some food and beverage that has been prepared by the
committee member, people are starting to break from their group and started to meet new people because they
have known each other better. During this period, the committee members started to introduce the different
events that PPIA held this year. Most students gain interest towards joining these events and approaches the
committee members asking to sign up. Joy and laughter are starting to be filled in the air by people as more
friendly faces are being seen and new faces are starting to be recognised.
The event was a massive success because it was originally planned to be ended at 7 but people are started
to get home at 8 because they enjoyed their time talking with their new friends as well as exchanging their
details. For many years this event has helped Indonesian students to gain new friends and also help them to
feel like they belong in a community, not only that but it also helped students to step out of their comfort
zone and actually be a part of something new.

deforestation in a nearby mountainous area,
known as the Cyclops, coupled with a large
volume of water in Lake Sentani as contributory
causes to the disaster.
“We can see this from the branches and trees that are floating. Those are not trees that have tumbled
down in the rain, rather they are trees that have been cut down,” Aiesh said.
He said some parts of the mountain had been turned into residential areas.
The deforestation in the mountain area, Aiesh went on, had reduced the number of springs that usually
flowed into Lake Sentani. He suspected that the overflowing of the lake occurred because of reclamation
coupled with the dumping of garbage.
Meanwhile, resident Yance Wenda said that the recent flooding was “more frightening” than a similar
deluge in 2007 as his house was inundated within a mere six hours.
“[The flood] brought down large rocks from the mountain. The torrent sounded like huge [ocean] waves,”

Jayapura flash flood kills 50 people,
evacuees in ‘urgent’ need of help
As of Sunday afternoon, at least 50 people were reported killed and 273 families had been left homeless
following a flash flood in Jayapura regency, Papua.
The flash flood occurred after heavy downpours in the area from Saturday afternoon to the early hours of
Sunday.
Jayapura Regent Matius Awoitauw told The Jakarta Post on Sunday that the survivors were in “urgent need”
of emergency aid such as food and medication and facilities for burying the dead.
Currently, 200 people are taking refuge at his residence while 1,400 others are sheltering in nearby schools.
Dead bodies are being taken to hospitals in the region for identification purposes.
He added that the regional government was working with the National Police and the Indonesian Military to
record and evacuate any other residents from the area while building public facilities for evacuees.
The Cendrawasih Military Command has set up a public kitchen that distributed 5,000 meals on Sunday at
lunchtime.
According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the flooding mostly struck the Sentani Kota
district, affecting Sentani Kota, Hinekombe and Dobonsolo subdistricts and five villages, Kampung Sereh,

“From hate love blooms”
(a message from Sunday March 23, 2019 gathering at Perth mosque)

On Sunday March 23, thousands gathered at the Perth City Mosque, Thornlie mosque, and Masjid Ibrahim to
pay their respects to the 50 lives lost in the Christchurch massacre on March 15.
The community spirit was strong, random people offered each other water and it was amazing to see so many
strangers hugging each other and exchanging kind words, a heart-warming display of love, care and affection.
It opened with a prayer, then Australian Indigenous dancers from the Corroboree for Life performed a traditional
dance with a didgeridoo then the haka was performed by members of Haka for Life.
“The message for today is from Hate Love blooms.” said Shameema Kolia. The 50 victims name were read
followed by a minute silence.
