Join a team of 16 women to contribute to
and learn more about the lives of
Malawian women and young people . . .This Expedition has 4 main experiences: skill sharing
with businesswomen, a visit to an entrepreneur's hub, an
overnight homestay, and school student workshops.
Along with your teammates - with whom you will very
quickly form strong bonds - you will contribute to the
sustainable development of one of the poorest countries
in the world, and leave with a wealth of
cultural learnings.Kate and Dom Webb, who founded Orbis
Expeditions, have a long history of running
sustainable travel experiences throughout Africa.
In 2008 they set up The Responsible Safari
Company (RSC). RSC essentially acts as Orbis
Expeditions' Malawian branch, handling all in-
country logistics (for example, your local guide).
Orbis Expeditions team are in
constant contact with our RSC
colleagues - whom you will
meet once you arrive in
Malawi, including your own
private Malawian guide.

Once the Expedition team is finalised, Orbis will match
your experiences and passions with relevant women and
organisations in Malawi.
Planning for the skill sharing day begins at least 6 weeks
before departure, via group video calls facilitated by
Orbis Expeditions founder Kate. This is a great way to get
to know your team before you travel with them!
Examples from 2018's teams include the lawyers from the
team visiting a Women's Rights Charity to discuss
possible solutions to ongoing challenges, and marketing
business owners running an audience analysis and social
media workshop. Past topics have spanned finance,
education, healthcare, and business growth.
Lunch at a nearby restaurant is a chance to get to know
these women on a more personal level; to discuss the
day-to-day life of a female entrepreneur in one of the
poorest countries in the world. You have the choice of visiting either a nearby
entrepreneurs hub, or a local youth group which is helping
deliver home-based care to families living with HIV/AIDS.
No matter which experience you choose, you will leave
feeling inspired by the determination of the Malawian
people working to improve both their lives and the lives of
others. There is simply no match for this type of
experiential learning.Your 24 hours with a Malawian family is a truly unique
experience! You will follow their routine: tending to the
garden, cooking food and playing with the children.
This is a result of a fantastic business initiative that we have
set up with a number of hosts in a small village near Zomba
Plateau.
Materially, life is very basic. There is limited or no
electricity. It will be trips to the well for water and washing.
Expect a small brick house, a mattress, and mosquito net –
and, of course, a huge welcome from your host family!Joining a community initiative on the shores of Lake
Malawi, your Expedition team will support students in a
village secondary school.
As with the skill sharing experience, planning for the
school workshops will begin prior to Expedition departure
via group video call.
2018's teams led a variety of activities. These ranged from
a CV workshop to mural painting, HIV education and
developing confidence. Previous examples have included
team building, STEM-style workshops, and mentoring.
Though Malawi's education system is mostly taught in
English, you will have to speak clearly and respect the
diversity of religions and cultures represented at the
school.
Though many of the students come from very
underprivileged backgrounds, they are incredibly
bright. Energetic, interactive tasks work best!Orbis Expeditions recognises that
you're giving up precious holiday
time to travel to Malawi.
We won't tell you every little detail
(we don't want to take away the 'wow'
factor of the treats we have lined
up!) - but rest assured that some of
your most special moments on this
Expedition will be during the
downtime between Challenges,
bonding with your teammates,
discussing the day's revelations -
often over a G&T!
To allow maximum chilling out
before traveling home, Orbis
Expeditions highly recommend
adding on 2 extra nights on the
luxurious Mumbo Island. The total cost of the September 2019 Women's
Empowerment Expedition is £1,800.
This is inclusive of all transfers, accommodation,
excursions, food, and filtered/bottled water.
Additional costs: flights (£600-£1,000, can be
sourced through Orbis for a booking fee of £25).
Visa upon entry ($75). £10-£20 per day spending
