was rendered by Rtn Narendra Nayak, and President Sudhir Jalan welcomed
the Chief Guest as well as members. Birthdays and anniversaries were
commemorated after which announcements were made regarding Samrudhia

Rtn PHF PP Dr Narendra Kamath introduced the Chief Guest Dr. Shyamanta
Barua and invited him to give his talk. Dr. Shyamanta Barua started off
with an introduction to the beautiful north eastern state, Assam. He spoke
of the geographical position and regarding the surrounding areas, and also
described the topography of the state. He gave insights into interesting facts
like the state tree: Hollong, which is a medium hardwood timber tree which
is used in construction and in plywood industry; the state flower: Foxtail
Orchid, which is in integral part of Bohag Bihu in Assam, where female Bihu
dancers decorate their hair with this flower; the state animal: One Horned
Rhino, out of the 3000 rhinos in the world, about 2000 are found in Assam,

thereby making Assam a place which can boast of the largest population of
the One Horned Rhino; and the State Bird: White Winged Wood Duck, which
locally known as the Deohaanh, is an endangered species, and only about 800
birds are now found in the wild, worldwide. The State River Brahmaputra, he
said, is the 9th largest river in the world by discharge, and the 15th longest
in the world. About 3,848 km long, the Brahmaputra is an important river
for irrigation and transportation in the region. The State Dance is Bihu, an
indigenous folk dance which is related to the Bihu festival and an important
part of Assamese culture. Performed in a group, the Bihu dancers are usually
young men and women, and the dancing style is characterized by brisk steps,
and rapid hand movements. The traditional costume of dancers is colourful
and centred round the red colour theme, signifying joy and vigour.

He then presented an array of breathtaking photographs of the lovely
landscape of Assam while vividly describing each one of them. He touched
upon the Kaziranga National Park, and spoke on the variety of wildlife which
is preserved there. Showcasing some amazing shots of Rhinos and Elephants,
he made a compelling case to ensure that everyone would want to visit

Rotary has worked with Global Citizen for a more than decade, primarily
regarding the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. At the 2012 Global Citizen
event in New York City, Rotary General Secretary John Hewko and celebrity
ambassador Archie Panjabi announced Rotary’s $75 million commitment to
polio eradication. Rotary and Global Citizen have also connected at Rotary
International Conventions, the Commonwealth Heads of Governments
Meetings, polio advocacy events, and polio funding announcements.
In total, more than $1.1 billion in commitments, 157 million trees to be planted,
and 60 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to be donated to developing
countries were announced in conjunction with the 25 September event.
